Rolex 24, Hour 20: Porsche-vs-BMW GTP fight heating up

Yahoo26-01-2025
Porsche Penske Motorsport's Laurens Vanthoor is leading the 63rd Rolex 24 At Daytona with four hours to go, but BMW M Team RLL is interjecting itself between the two factory Porsches.
That's because Kevin Magnussen has driven the No. 24 BMW M Hybrid V8 past the No. 6 Penske Porsche 963 of Matt Campbell shortly after the most recent green flag restart. Magnussen is still aboard the No. 24 BMW, while Mathieu Jaminet is back in the No. 6 Porsche.
Vanthoor leads by about eight seconds in GTP while, about a minute behind him, the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06 of Colin Braun runs fourth as the last car on the lead lap.
Porsche Penske has also staggered its pit strategies since the last couple of full course yellows — the No. 7 is a few laps further into its energy tank than the No. 6, but these strategies should converge towards the end of the race, and definitely will if another FCY is deployed.
Dane Cameron is stretching his advantage out in the No. 99 AO Racing ORECA LMP2. The reigning IMSA champion leading the class from reigning Le Mans 24 Hours winner Nicklas Nielsen in the No. 88 AF Corse ORECA.
Nielsen overtook Tower Motorsports' Sebastian Alvarez for second place; Alvarez is now third with Ryan Dalziel in fourth for ERA Motorsport.
LMP2 battle for second! A little over 4 hours to go, things are picking up.

The No. 21 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 is the latest retirement from the field in GTD as a result of damage sustained in an incident that also involved the No. 78 Forte Racing Lamborghini and the No. 80 Lone Star Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3.
The No. 78 is still in the garage undergoing repairs, as is the No. 023 Triarsi Competizione Ferrari which went behind the wall after a severe vibration led to further work under the front end. The No. 80 Mercedes has returned though it is now 30 laps down in GTD.
We do have five makes in the top five in GTD PRO, separated by relatively slim margins. Connor De Phillippi has taken over the No. 1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 EVO and the American leads the No. 4 Corvette Racing Z06 GT3.R of Tommy Milner by 1.5s.
Milner had a close call with the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus that ended up giving the Lexus a left-front puncture, but the No. 4 Pratt Miller Corvette avoided a penalty. Antonio Garcia's contact with his countryman Miguel Molina was not given the same grace — Garcia and the No. 3 Corvette got a drive-through for avoidable contact with the No. 81 DragonSpeed Ferrari.
GetSpeed's first Rolex 24 is going well — Luca Stolz is running third in the No. 69 Mercedes-AMG GT3, followed closely by the No. 65 Ford Multimatic Mustang GT3 of Chris Mies.
In GTD it's still the No. 13 AWA Corvette in front driven by Marvin Kirchhöfer, by five seconds over the No. 120 Wright Motorsports Porsche of Tom Sargent.
But the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG is back in the fight after its earlier drive-through penalty that took the reigning GTD champions out of the lead. Philip Ellis is third, ahead of Heart of Racing's Tom Gamble.

How to watch 2025 IMSA Road America on Peacock: Streaming info, start times and daily schedules

Acura will try to maintain a two-month win streak in the Grand Touring Prototype category of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. After wins at Detroit (the No. 93 ARX-06) and Watkins Glen International (the No. 60 ARX-06), the Meyer Shank Racing Acuras will return with IMSA's premier division at Road America — where the manufacturer is winless since a 2022 repave. But Tom Blomqvist, who won at Watkins Glen with co-driver Colin Braun, is optimistic after a strong test at the 14-turn, 4.048-mile road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. 'I'd say it's probably my favorite track from an enjoyment level to drive,' Blomqvist said. 'I think also we're lucky that it's a great track for our car. It really brings out the strengths. 'In the past, it's always been a strong track for us, so I don't see a reason why it's not going to be again. I think we we've really made good gains as a team as well. Every race we're kind of getting better with the new organization, as there's a lot of new faces and new people. I feel like we're just getting stronger. So, yeah, I think we're hopeful that we can fight for the victory again next weekend.' After taking the 2024 season off, MSR has returned to full-time competition with heavier involvement from Honda Racing Corporation in the strategy and engineering of its No. 93 ARX-06. Acura's winning run has interrupted a strong start for Porsche Penske Motorsport, which won the first four races this season (most recently in mid-May at Laguna Seca) and still maintains a healthy lead in the championship standings. Full-time manufacturers BMW and Cadillac are seeking their first GTP wins in 2025. The GTP category has been on a six-week layoff since mid-June at Watkins Glen and returns for the only sprint race that will feature all four divisions of the SportsCar Championship. It's also the last two-hour, 40-minute race for a while at Road America, whose event will increase to six hours next year. Last year, Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy combined for a win in the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963. Jaminet remains in the No. 6 with Matt Campbell, and Tandy is paired with Felipe Nasr in the No. 7, which leads the points. This week in EV tech: California dreaming

While Chevrolet Corvette hybrids are now a thing, it could still be a while before an all-electric Corvette enters production. But General Motors is tasking its designers to imagine what a future Corvette EV could look like. Unveiled this week, the California Corvette concept is the second of three 'Vette design studies debuting this year, each from a GM studio in a different region. The first, revealed in March, came from the automaker's U.K. studio while this one, as the name implies, is the product of GM's Advanced Design studios in Pasadena, California. Recommended Videos Borrowing the internal codename of another concept car that eventually morphed into 1992's Corvette Stingray III concept, the California Corvette of 2025 leverages the packaging flexibility of electric powertrains to improve performance. Its carbon-fiber tub chassis incorporates a T-shaped battery pack with prismatic cells (the same form factor used in current GM EVs), which leaves room for large underbody tunnels that channel air more efficiently around the vehicle. Tunnels like these have been used in race cars — mostly notably the AAR/Toyota Eagle Mk III — to generate downforce that presses the car into the track surface for better grip without generating the aerodynamic drag associated with more conventional downforce-generating like spoilers that sit on the surface of the bodywork. Minimizing drag is crucial to maximizing EV range, so a design like this could offer the best of both worlds for a future electric sports car. The California Corvette is just a design exercise, but GM did say in 2022 that an all-electric Corvette, based on the current-generation C8 model, was in development. When we'll finally see it — and whether it will look anything like the California Corvette or the other two concepts GM is trotting out — remains to be seen. Faraday Future's new face Few EV startups have been embroiled in as much drama as Faraday Future, which spent nearly a decade trying to get its FF91 electric SUV into a production, a process that saw it abandon a planned Nevada factory project for a repurposed tire plant in California while suffering a constant stream of financial calamities. Having finally launched low-volume production of the FF91, Faraday Future this week unveiled a bizarre follow-up. It's called the Faraday FX Super One, and it's an electric minivan pitched as a rival to the Cadillac Escalade, with high-tech AI features. In actuality, it's a Chinese-market Great Wall Motors Wey Gaoshan with a screen attached to the front. Faraday Future calls that 'Super EAI F.A.C.E. (Front AI Communication Ecosystem) System,' and claims it will allow the vehicle to 'communicate' with the world as a representative of its driver. How that will work, and what benefit it might have, is unclear. On the more practical side, Faraday Future said the FX Super One will be available in six-, seven-, or more luxurious four-seat configurations. The latter will feature suspended zero-gravity seats with heating, ventilation, and 10-way massage. Faraday isn't the only automaker thinking along these lines; earlier this year Mercedes-Benz unveiled its Vision V concept, previewing a luxurious van expected to debut within the next year or so. Solid-state batteries still in the news Two announcements this week indicated incremental progress in bringing solid-state batteries to production EVs. Solid-state batteries get their name from their solid electrolyte, which a host of startups and automakers have said will result greater range without increasing battery-pack size. But commercialization has proceeded slowly. Volkswagen has been collaborating with solid-state battery developer QuantumScape since 2012, and last year its PowerCo battery division inked a deal with QuantumScape for enough batteries to power up to one million EVs annually. This week the two corporate entities announced an expansion of that agreement that will see PowerCo become actively involved in pilot production of solid-state batteries earlier. QuantumScape says this will help it scale manufacturing more quickly. Meanwhile, fellow German automaker Mercedes-Benz expects to bring an EV powered by solid-state batteries to production 'before the end of the decade,' Markus Schafer, the automaker's head of development, said in an interview with Automobilwoche. Mercedes has also partnered with a startup — Factorial — but has also begun public testing of an EQS sedan with prototype solid-state batteries.

Corvette silenced in Europe — at least at start

General Motors' big, brash Corvette has been silenced in Europe for the first time — at least up to the first 70 kph (44 mph). The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray hybrid launched in Europe with a 'stealth' mode that allows it to start on electric power for silent getaways. 'It's good for neighbor relations when you leave early in the morning,' GM Europe President Pere Brugal said at the supercar's launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 10. The new model adds a 162-hp electric motor on the front axle mated to a 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery to create the first all-wheel-drive Corvette. Sign up for the Automotive News Europe Focus on Electrification newsletter, a weekly wrap-up of the latest electric vehicle news, including interviews and global EV sales data. Overall power is 644 hp and the 0 to 100 kph time is 2.9 seconds, making the E-Ray the quickest production Corvette available in Europe. The price in the U.K. is £153,440 ($206,000) for the coupe variant, undercutting the Z06 but far above the standard V-8 model at £92,890. Both coupe and convertible versions of the E-Ray will be sold across Chevrolet's 18 European markets. The hybrid technology gives the U.S. automaker an answer to the increasing number of electrified supercars from European rivals. 'We think the timing is perfect,' Brugal said. 'The hybrid supercar market is experiencing huge growth.' Half of the models sold in Europe's exotic segment were plug-in hybrids in the first six months of the year, marking 49 percent growth for PHEVs, preliminary figures from market researcher Dataforce show. Some were SUVs, topped by the BMW XM, but electrified supercars also include the segment's No. 4 seller, the Ferrari 296 GTS, as well as the Ferrari SF90, Lamborghini Revuelto and McLaren Artura. Lamborghini's new Temerario, a replacement for the Huracan, will also be a PHEV. The E-Ray is a hybrid rather than a PHEV, but the model will also compete with the new Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid. Like the E-Ray, the 911 hybrid will have a 1.9-kWh battery pack. The Corvette was GM's bestselling car in Europe in the first half of the year, with volume of 338 — 39 sales ahead of the Cadillac Lyriq full-electric SUV, according to Dataforce figures. No other models have so far been offered by Cadillac in its launch markets of France, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. More markets and models are coming, but Cadillac is in no rush to announce them. 'We're not here to push metal,' Brugal said. GM returned to Europe in 2024 with Cadillac after exiting the market in 2017 with the sale of its Opel and Vauxhall subsidiaries to PSA Group. Opel and Vauxhall are now part of Stellantis. Premium rivals to BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz — along with JLR and Volvo — have found it difficult to gain traction in Europe, but Brugal insists that customers will be lured to Cadillac by the combination of design, brand awareness and technology. Cadillac has yet to offer its Super Cruise hands-off, eyes-on semi-autonomous driving system in Europe, but that will change next year, Brugal said. GM has a fleet of vehicles testing Super Cruise on Europe's major highways with the aim of following Ford, which already offers its similar BlueCruise system in certain models, including the Mustang Mach-E full-electric SUV. Last year, Ford said it won permission to offer BlueCruise in 15 European Union countries over 133,000 kilometers (82,744 miles) of Blue Zones.
