Five things Barack Obama should do on his trip to Ireland

Extra.ie2 days ago
Barack Obama is back in Ireland in September as part of a one-night-only interview series.
The former US President will take to the stage at the 3Arena for an intimate one-on-one interview with journalist Fintan O'Toole.
The 63-year-old has long been a fan of all things Ireland, with his Irish ancestry a point of pride and curiosity particularly during his 2011 Presidential visit. While Obama will likely only be making a quick trip to Dublin, there's plenty for the former US President to do if his trip ends up being longer…
The former President releases his favourite songs, movies and books of the year annually via social media with last year seeing Dublin rock band Fontaines DC lauded.
Elsewhere, Hozier was named one of his faves, with Obama taking a particular like to the Wicklow singer's song Too Sweet. 'Check them out if you're looking to shake up your playlist,' Obama said alongside the list of his favourite tracks of 2024.
What better way to kickstart a trip in Ireland than with a performance from one of his favourite Irish artists.
Unfortunately, neither Fontaines DC or Hozier are playing in the capital in September, but we daresay if Obama got on the phone they would be quick to get a secret gig organised. Pic:Obama's Irish links trace back to the small village of Moneygall, where his great-great-great-grandfather Falmouth Kearney emigrated from in 1831.
During his 2011 Presidential trip, Obama famously sipped a pint of Guinness in Moneygall, solidifying himself as one of them — they even built a petrol station in his honour just off the M7 motorway.

Last year, Obama also gave Irish author Sally Rooney a shout-out for her new release Intermezzo, which he said was one of his favourite books of the year. Sally appears to be becoming a firm fave with Obama, who listed her debut novel Normal People one of his favourite books of 2019 way back when.
While we're not sure if the former US President has watched the TV adaptation, perhaps he could get inside the mindset of Marianne Sheridan with a trip to Trinity College Dublin, the college she attended following secondary school.

From one beloved President to another…. President of Ireland Michael D Higgins finishes up his role in office later this year. The 84-year-old has served the maximum of two terms so cannot seek re-election.
Similarly, Obama served as President of the US from 2009 to 2017, so might be able to lend the outgoing Irish President some words of wisdom on his retirement from office.
Perhaps, the American man can advise President Higgins on some American music and books to get stuck into during his retirement. From one beloved President to another…. Having had a pint of the black stuff when he visited in 2011, we know Obama is a fan of Guinness. Perhaps if he has some down time he might be able to check out one of Dublin's cheapest pints.
Earlier this year, Diageo revealed they were increasing the price of pints for a fourth time in just two years.
Among the Dublin hot spots still selling a pint of the stout for less than a fiver is the Auld Triangle on Dorset Street.
An Evening with President Barack Obama will see the former president speak about his time in the White House and what's next for the US of A.
The one night only show is the perfect chance for people to hear from one of the most transformative leaders of our time, as he shares messages of hope, resilience and the power of lifting one another up.
Tickets for the events go on sale at 10am on Thursday 10 July, with 100 tickets set aside in each city for charitable organisations.

Tipperary group in ‘shock' as GAA Palestine children and mentors refused visas for Irish tour

Cashel for Palestine said they are 'united in utter shock, heartbreak, and disbelief' at the news that visas have been denied to the 33 Palestinian children and their mentors from GAA Palestine, who were due to arrive in Tipperary on Tuesday, July 22. A lack of compliance with visa application criteria is the reason given for the visa denials. 'This visit was never just a trip,' said a spokesperson. 'It was a beacon of hope - a chance for children who have known only fear, trauma, and war to experience joy, solidarity, and peace through the simple, unifying power of sport. 'For months, host families across Tipperary opened their hearts and homes in preparation. Clubs, communities, and volunteers rallied with warmth, generosity, and unwavering support. Every corner of the county was ready to embrace these children - not as strangers, but as friends. 'We were so looking forward to welcoming them to the spiritual home of the GAA. A historic visit to Hayes Hotel, Lár na Páirce, and Semple Stadium awaited - places where the soul of Irish sporting history lives. 'But more than that, these children were to play the game they love alongside 120 young players from clubs across Tipperary. Children meeting children, not divided by politics or borders, but united by sport, laughter, and shared dreams. 'To deny them this opportunity is a cruelty that defies words. But we will not give up. Our solidarity is unwavering. The outpouring of support from every part of Tipperary has been extraordinary. And we will continue to fight - for these children, for justice, and for the day when they will visit the Premier County.' The issue was raised to the Tánaiste, Simon Harris, in the Dáil on Thursday, where he explained that "unfortunately, not all people will be able to demonstrate that they satisfy the conditions to be granted a visa to come to Ireland'. "The granting of a visa is a very important legal document in our migration system. These applications were given very careful consideration," he continued. "A visa officer has to be satisfied that children are traveling under the company of their parents or an appropriate guardian. Additional documents, such as birth certs, consent letters are regularly requested to establish the relationship. "There is an appeals process under way."

Wedding expert weighs in on public marriage proposals as they trend online

Public marriage proposals seem to be the new trend after a hopeful groom-to-be got down on one knee at a packed-out Mayo pub and another at an Oasis gig in Cardiff. As Taylor Swift-mania took place across the globe last year with her Eras tour, lovers also popped the question as she sang her hit Love Story. But it isn't just regular folk putting on these public displays. Earlier this week, Kelly Osbourne's partner Sid Wilson surprised the star with a dazzling rock at her father Ozzy Osbourne's concert in Birmingham. The whole clan were in attendance, so the Slipknot star thought it the perfect time to pop the question. But, are these public proposals a romantic way to show your spouse how much you love them, or is it all done for social media views? Wedding expert and co-founder of SaveMyDay Shell Holden thinks they can be incredibly special but only when it reflects the couple's personality. She told the Irish Mirror: "For some, there's nothing more romantic than declaring love in front of a crowd, especially in a place that holds meaning, like a festival where they've made memories together or a concert of their favourite band. "For others, a quiet, private moment will feel more authentic. So really, it all comes down to knowing your partner and what would make them feel most comfortable. "Whether it's a big surprise moment on stage or a quiet gesture in the crowd amongst their friends or between the couple together, it's about knowing your partner and creating a memory that feels true to you both." While public proposals are getting some attention at the moment, getting down on one knee in front of a crowd is nothing new. From Irish country favourite Garth Brooks proposing to his wife Trisha at a statue-unveiling event, to the Rose of Tralee proposal that nearly went wrong, here are some of the most memorable: In May 2005, the country music star put on quite the show at Buck Owens' Crystal Palace, a music hall in Bakersfield, California. Garth was in attendance at the star-studded Legends in Bronze event, where a statue of him and nine other country icons was displayed. When his bronze art piece was unveiled, it featured a conspicuous wedding band on the left ring finger. It was then that Garth popped the question to his wife-to-be Trisha. Despite being put on the spot, she appeared shocked but delighted, saying: "All I can say is that I am so happy". After being together since 1987, they tied the knot in December 2005, and have been together since. While the Rose of Tralee has had some viral moments over the years, no one in Ireland will forget the marriage proposal that almost went terribly wrong. During the 2013 competition, New Orleans Rose Molly Molloy Gambel was given the shock of her life. Her partner Kyle surprised her while she was on stage and dropped to his knee with a sparkler in his hand. Everyone in the country was on the edge of their seats then as she said: "No, no, no, no, no, no. Please don't. No." It seemed like poor Kyle was being dumped on live television. However, the New Orleans Rose was just extremely shocked and managed to let out a "yes" before trembling off the stage. It's no surprise that the controversial rapper went big when he popped the question to his reality star girlfriend. In October 2013, Kanye proposed to Kim on her 33rd birthday at AT&T Park in San Francisco. A 50-piece orchestra played Lana Del Rey's Young and Beautiful as fireworks went off. The scoreboard read "PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!!" and Kanye presented his wife-to-be with a sparkling 15-carat diamond ring. While they share four children, their marriage didn't last as they got divorced three years ago. Three months ago, Brendan planned the perfect proposal for his girlfriend Cat in Galway city. He enlisted the help of local busker Echo Harte who sang Beautiful Affair by Stockton's Wing as the couple walked by. Having no idea it was for her, Cat can be heard on video saying "I love this song". It was at that moment that Brendan dropped to his knee and cheers could be heard from passers-by as Cat said yes. While getting down on one knee during Taylor Swift's Love Story at her Eras tour became quite the trend, it was a very special moment for one couple. Tipperary lovers Jack Shealy and Melissa Keogh flew home to Ireland from Canada to see the pop star perform at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin last year. But little did Melissa know that the night would be so much more special than seeing the singer. During Love Story, when Taylor sang, "He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring" Jack did just that. Other concert-goers captured the gorgeous moment, and Melissa of course said yes - just like Juliet in the song.
