Pogacar chases quadruple, Thomas bids farewell – 5 Tour de France talking points

Glasgow Times2 days ago
Here the PA news agency looks at the key talking points ahead of the 112th edition.
Familiar fight for yellow?
Defending champion Tadej Pogacar is the overwhelming favourite to wear yellow in Paris and move level with Chris Froome on four career titles. And why not? The 26-year-old was outstanding last season, completing the Triple Crown of the Giro, Tour and world title, and has continued to pile up the wins this term. But two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard is ready to resume his now familiar rivalry with the Slovenian confident he is much closer to the form that saw him win in 2022 and 2023 than he was last year, when a devastating crash at the Tour of the Basque Country almost ruled him out of the Tour entirely. With Remco Evenepoel continuing to step forward and Primoz Roglic also racing after the early end of his Giro hopes, there are others who cannot be ignored.
An open sprint field

Predicting the sprint stages looks a difficult task this year. Tim Merlier arrives with the most wins, 10, of any of the quick men, but only one Tour victory to his name in his only previous appearance back in 2021. Difficult terrain means there are few pure sprints, something that might seem to favour Jasper Philipsen, who won three stages last year to take his Tour career tally to nine, but his Soudal Quick-Step team have split priorities as Evenepoel eyes yellow. Tour debutant Jonathan Milan could profit from the more difficult finishes, but the parcours also suits Biniam Girmay, winner of three stages last year.
Farewell Geraint
Geraint Thomas was crowned Tour de France champion in 2018 (Pete Goding/PA)
Geraint Thomas will start cycling's biggest race for the 14th and final time before retirement. His overall victory in 2018 was arguably the finest moment of a career that began with Olympic glory on the track, but his relationship with the Tour is a deeper story. Many fans fondly remember how he rode 20 stages of the 2013 race with a broken pelvis, determined to help Froome to victory at great personal cost. After the retirement of Mark Cavendish last year, the fact Froome has likely ridden his last Tour and the impending retirements of both Thomas and Lizzie Deignan, it feels like the end of an era for British cycling.
Paris awaits
The Tour's now traditional finish on the Champs-Elysees returns in 2025 (Pete Goding/PA)
After last year's Olympics forced the Tour to swerve the French capital for the first time in race history, the now traditional finish on the Champs-Elysees will return in 2025. Before then a race that takes place entirely within the borders of France will challenge the riders with more than 50,000m of elevation, but also an unusually tricky opening week in the north of the country before the Pyrenees and Alps serve up their usual punishment.
Brits in the race

Eleven Brits are due to start the race, including freshly-minted Giro champion Simon Yates, riding in support in Vingegaard, and twin brother Adam, supporting Pogacar. While Thomas waves goodbye, younger riders like Fred Wright, Oscar Onley and Lewis Askey will seek their breakaway opportunities. Jake Stewart lines up for his second Tour, while Sean Flynn and Joe Blackmore make their debuts. Connor Swift and new British champion Sam Watson, another debutant, join Thomas in the Ineos Grenadiers squad.

Family and friends gather at Diogo Jota's wake as queue forms outside chapel

The father of three, who married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso 11 days before the accident, was killed alongside his brother, Andre Silva, after a Lamborghini they were travelling in burst into flames following a suspected tyre blowout in the early hours of Thursday morning. The brothers' parents attended the Sao Cosme Chapel, the Capela da Ressurreicao, in the town of Gondomar near Porto on Friday, with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and Jota's agent also among attendees. Some mourners embraced and cried before entering the venue as floral tributes of yellow and white and candles were lain by a tree outside. People cried as they made their way to pay their respects (PA) People held service sheets featuring pictures of both brothers, the largest one showing Jota smiling in his Liverpool FC shirt and making a heart sign with his hands. One man came to pay his respects wearing a Liverpool top. The wake comes ahead of their funeral, which parish priest at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Sao Cosme, Jose Manuel Macedo, said would begin at 10am on Saturday. Liverpool Football Club postponed the return of players for pre-season following Jota's death, as a number of players past and present paid tribute. The club's manager, Arne Slot, said the 'sense of shock is absolute', adding: 'He was a loved one to all of us.' Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson returned to Anfield with flowers and a club scarf on Friday as he paid his own tribute to Jota. A sea of floral tributes had been left outside the ground, with many Liverpool fans and supporters of other clubs looking to pay their respects. Flags have been lowered to half-mast at the stadium and all club stores, museums and tours have been closed until Monday, with staff offered wellbeing support. Liverpool forward Mo Salah said the loss has made the prospect of returning to the club frightening. One man wore a Liverpool shirt to pay his respects (PA) He shared a black and white picture of him and Jota hugging on the pitch on social media, saying: 'I am truly lost for words. 'Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. 'Team mates come and go but not like this. It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back.' Jota and Silva were both found dead after the car crashed on the A-52 in Palacios de Sanabria near the city of Zamora at 12.40am on Thursday. Police said they were investigating the possibility that the Lamborghini left the road because of a tyre blowout while overtaking, and a source from the government sub-delegation in Zamora confirmed 'a possible speeding incident' was being looked at. Jota was killed in a car crash on Thursday (Mike Egerton/PA) Pictures of the aftermath of the crash showed debris scattered along the side of the road including what appeared to be charred parts of the vehicle. No other vehicles are said to have been involved in the incident. The club has opened physical and digital books of condolence in the wake of the deaths, and supporters and members of the public can go to the Anfield Road Stand reception area over the coming days to sign a message. Marcus Rashford among five players to tell Manchester United they want to leave

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is one of five players who have told the club they want to leave Old Trafford this summer, the PA news agency understands. It is understood Rashford, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have all informed United they see their futures lying elsewhere. United have responded by delaying their scheduled return for pre-season training until the end of July to allow them time to find new clubs. Should none of the players secure a new deal elsewhere before the end of the month, they will be welcomed back to Carrington, where they will continue to have full access to medical and training support. PA also understands summer signing Matheus Cunha will be given the number 10 shirt, which had been worn by Rashford, for next season and United have informed the England international's representatives of the decision. Rashford scored four goals in 17 appearances during his time at Villa Park, but the Midlands club decided not to activate the £40million option to buy him. The 27-year-old, who fell out of favour at United under head coach Ruben Amorim, is reportedly keen on a move to Barcelona and does not want a move to London, ruling out the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. There is also reported interest from Germany, Italy and Saudi Arabia for the player, who has scored 17 goals in 62 appearances for England. Garnacho, who made his first-team debut for United as a 17-year-old in 2022 after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020, has scored 16 goals in 93 Premier League appearances. But his relationship with Amorim has also deteriorated after he vented his frustration on social media following his omission from United's starting line-up in their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. The Argentinian has been linked with both Chelsea and Italian champions Napoli. Antony failed to justify his huge price tag at Old Trafford after arriving from Ajax in an £82million deal in 2022, but he rediscovered top form after joining Real Betis on loan in January. Sancho has also endured a difficult spell at United following his arrival from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in 2021. His only appearance for United since his fall out with former boss Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2023 came in the 2024 Community Shield against Manchester City. After spending last season on loan at Chelsea, the Londoners opted to pay a £5m fine rather than sign Sancho permanently for £25m. He has been reported to have held talks with Juventus.

Arsenal Files: Still no Benjamin Sesko transfer offer as Gunners wait for nervous Leipzig to act

RB Leipzig are in desperate need to sell players to rebuild their squad after missing out on Champions League football last season. Last summer, they raked in around £85m from Dani Olmo and Mohamed Sinakan. The year before, a whopping total of around £188m for Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai and Josko Gvardiol. And in 2021, they managed to convince Bayern Munich to fork out a record-breaking £21m to lure manager Julian Nagelsmann away. They had hoped that winger Xavi Simons – who they signed for a club record £70m including add-ons in January before asking to leave this summer – could generate a good return, but his recent form has not turned heads. In this window then, Leipzig have accepted that Sesko, 22, will be the man to fill up their kitty. The issue is that Arsenal have still not made a bid – and that is seriously worrying the German club. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS SunSport understands that, as it stands, negotiations over a fee that both clubs are happy to shake hands on are at a stalemate. And there are no signs of progressing, despite Arsenal and boss Mikel Arteta's well-documented admiration of the young Slovenian. Arsenal consider around £60m a fair price. Leipzig would prefer upwards of £70m, but the Gunners are ready to dig their heels in and hold out, playing hardball for their man. Arsenal know that Leipzig are getting desperate, in a weak negotiating position financially, and they are confident they represent Sesko's best chance of a move this summer with other suitors, for now, looking elsewhere for a No.9. Sesko's agent Elvis Basanovic has so far been reluctant to pressure Leipzig into a sale. There are frustrations that the 'gentleman's agreement' the the striker could leave for £60m is in danger of being broken. But Sesko's entourage know relations need to be kept sweet should his player stay in Germany, and has been keeping a lower profile than usual. 6 Inside Arsenal's frustrating striker transfer saga By Jordan Davies ARSENAL'S never-ending hunt for a world-class striker is in turmoil as deals for Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres stall. The Gunners were confident of doing their business quickly this summer after months of preparation by boss Mikel Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta. But inflated asking prices and broken gentlemen's agreements have derailed those plans and left Arsenal frustrated. Sesko believed he would be allowed to leave RB Leipzig for around £60million, while SunSport understands Gyokeres was told £59m would be enough to seal his own exit. But those price-tags have gone up, leaving Arsenal debating whether they represent value for money. While the players' camps are also growing restless, knowing the Gunners can only sign one of them. So what next? Will Arsenal keep waiting in the hope of fees eventually going down? Or turn to other targets, like Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike? Whatever they decide, with pre-season looming and the fixtures already out, Arteta will be desperate for them to move quickly to avoid another nearly season. The hope for Arsenal is that, in the coming weeks, Leipzig lose patience and lower their asking price, in need of the funds as soon as possible to get their own deals over the line. But SunSport understands they have still not yet highlighted a preferred Sesko replacement. There is, however, a growing unrest within the Leipzig fanbase which could also force the club's hand in negotiations. There are concerns Sesko will not react well to not getting his move, especially given their absence from the Champions League. Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta will not wait around forever though. The ideally want a striker through the door before their pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong on July 19. And they have maintained an interest in Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike should the Sesko move collapse. In short, it looks a mess from the outside, but Arsenal remain calm over their approach. 6 Former Man Utd star Gabriel Heinze is getting straight to work in his new Arsenal role Credit: Getty HEINZE STRAIGHT IN FORMER Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze will join Mikel Arteta's coaching staff at Arsenal. The Argentine will fill in after the recent departure of assistant Carlos Cuesta, who became Parma's new head coach. And SunSport understands that Heinze is set to get straight to work by joining the squad on their warm-weather trip to Spain next week ahead of their pre-season two-week tour of Asia from July 19. Arteta is keen to integrate Heinze, 47, with the players quickly to develop lasting relationships, as well as helping his new man get to grips with the demands of supporting a Premier League squad. Argentine coach Heinze has spent most of his managerial career in his home nation, as well as a short stint in the MLS with Atlanta United.
