‘Unable to find a direct flight, London-based family opted for Air India flight from Ahmedabad'
With no direct flight tickets available from Mumbai for their return journey to London, the family opted for a flight from Ahmedabad. That detour, however, proved fatal. Air India flight AI 171 they had boarded crashed shortly after takeoff two days ago, killing Javed, Mariam, and their two children, two of the youngest victims of the tragedy.
Javed, a former resident of Malad, had moved to the UK a decade ago and subsequently gained citizenship. He worked as a manager at the Best Western Kensington Olympia Hotel in London and had married Mariam, whom he met in the UK.
'He hadn't been here in years. Our mother had a heart attack recently and Eid was near, so he wanted to be here for both,' said Imtiyaz Ali Syed, Javed's brother.
The family stayed in Malad for several days before travelling to Ahmedabad earlier this week to catch their return flight. 'We are devastated,' said Imtiyaz, who has travelled to Ahmedabad along with another family member to assist in the identification process and submit DNA samples. The bodies of the family have not yet been located. 'We wish they had taken a flight from Mumbai. Perhaps this would not have occurred,' Imtiyaz said.

Pakistan-linked arms rackets busted in Amritsar, 9 arrested
Amritsar: In coordinated operations targeting Pakistan-linked cross-border arms trafficking, Punjab Police on Friday announced the arrest of nine individuals — including a juvenile — and the seizure of 13 sophisticated pistols in a major crackdown on smuggling modules. Director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the counter-intelligence (CI) team in Amritsar had dismantled a Pakistan-backed network, arresting five operatives and recovering six pistols — four 9mm Glock handguns and two .30-bore pistols — along with magazines and ammunition. The arrested individuals were Jagroop Singh of Dhun, Navdeep Singh of Patti Lahian Di, Gurlal Singh of Rajoke, and Joban Singh of Patti Mana Ki — all from Tarn Taran district — along with Arshdeep Singh of Shaliwal in Amritsar district. Police believe they were acting on instructions from a Pakistan-based smuggler known as Rana, tasked with delivering arms to criminal gangs in Punjab to destabilise the sensitive border region. RTO detects misuse of eKYC-based faceless system, 3 learner licences cancelled
1 2 Nagpur: The Regional Transport Office (Nagpur City) cancelled the learner licences of three individuals after detecting misuse of the eKYC-based faceless system. The action followed an internal probe which revealed that the candidates shared their Aadhaar-linked OTPs with third parties, who then took the online test on their behalf. Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector Dhwaj Dakhne lodged a complaint with Sitabuldi Police Station on July 10, 2025, seeking an investigation into the matter. According to RTO officials, the faceless system was designed to eliminate human intervention by using biometric verification and OTP-based authentication, but this case exposed vulnerabilities in its implementation. According to the RTO's findings, three candidates allegedly shared their eKYC-generated OTPs with third-party representatives, who then appeared for the learner licence test on their behalf. The RTO submitted that all relevant evidence, including audio recordings, will be provided to the police. "We have asked the RTO to verify the case at their level and identify the three individuals who indulged in malpractice. Once we receive proper documentation and evidence to the matter, legal action will follow," the official said. "This incident is a serious breach of the faceless service system, which was introduced to simplify the licensing process. Sharing OTPs to let someone else take the test is a clear violation of the law and undermines the system's credibility," said Kiran Bidkar, Regional Transport Officer, Nagpur (City). Bidkar added that the licences have already been cancelled and a formal police complaint has been lodged. "Citizens are strictly advised not to misuse the faceless system. If any such fraud is found, we will take stringent action in the interest of road safety and system integrity," he said.
