Price reduced as GWM stickers new entry-level P300 variant

Great Wall Motors (GWM) has resumed phasing-out the P-Series moniker in favour of P300 with the introduction of the entry-level LS grade in place of the former's DLX.
Soon to become the middle grade as the P-Series' base SX moniker will be carried over before the end of the year, the LS' main difference from the top-spec LT mainly involves reduced specification with no obvious exterior changes.
As such, its sports differently styled alloy wheels, still measuring 18-inches, loses the transparent bonnet-view camera, Auto High Beam Assist function for the LED headlights, the glass sunroof, electric front seats and the auto-dimming rear-view camera.
In addition, the leather upholstery makes way for a leatherette finish, while the heating and ventilation functions for the front chairs also disappear, along with the multi-colour ambient lighting system.
On the safety side, most of the driver assistance system have also been removed to reduce costs, these being the centre airbag, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition and Front Collision Warning system.
Also no longer included are the front parking sensors, the 360-degree camera system, Reverse Automatic Braking and the fold-down step integrated into the top of the tailgate.
As standard, the P300 LS offers the following carried over from the LT;
12.3-inch infotainment display;
six-speaker sound system;
keyless entry;
seven-inch instrument cluster;
push-button start;
dual-zone climate control;
leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel;
LED daytime running lights and fog lamps;
side-steps;
rubberised loadbin;
wireless smartphone charger;
roof rails
Still included on the safety sheet is a reverse camera and rear parking sensors, cruise control, six airbags, Driver Attention Alert, tyre pressure monitor, Hill Start Assist, Collision Mitigation, Trailer Sway Control and Electronic Stability Control.
Up front, the LS retains the new 2.4-litre turbodiesel also used in the GWM Tank 300, with its 135kW/480Nm going to the rear or all four wheels via an in-house developed nine-speed automatic gearbox.
Still able tow 3 000 kg or 3 500 kg in the case of the four-wheel-drive, the LS has a rated ground clearance of 232 mm and inclusive of an electronic rear diff-lock on the latter.
Claimed fuel consumption is 7.4 L/100 km for the two-wheel-drive and eight-litres per 100 km for the 4×4.
Colours and price
In total, the LS can be decked-out in one of five colours, white, black, Pittsburgh Silver, Swarovski Blue and Mars Red.
As with the LT, the P300 LS's sticker prices include a seven-year/200 000 km warranty and a seven-year/75 000 km service plan.

Work-ready single cab Isuzu D-Max ready to strut its stuff

The Citizen will spent the next three months in the company of the Japanese brand's locally made flagship single cab D-Max. It is not often that the motoring media gets to drive a bakkie that is not a double cab or at best, whatever nomenclature a manufacturer gives to its cab-and-a-half derivates. Single cab importance Whereas the lifestyle deception applies to the former, the latter pair are mostly work implements with limited 'everyday' useability as a result of providing seating for two. ALSO READ: LS joins base and L in expanded Isuzu D-Max single cab range Along with lacking certain features deemed not required, they are omitted from most media fleets for added fear of being unfairly taken apart by those seemingly unable to understand the difference between a leisure bakkie and a workhorse. Still, workhorses are the bread-and-butter for the majority of South Africa's bakkie brands and while the monthly National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMS) figures don't provide a figures breakdown based on bodystyle, a quick search reveals that no less than eight brands offer single cabs locally. Plans are being set into motion to make use of the D-Max loadbox throughout the course of its three month tenure. Besides the Great Wall Motors (GWM) Steed and P Series, and the Foton Tunland, all the others are locally assembled by comprising the Ford Ranger, Mahindra Pik Up, Nissan Navara, Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok. Welcome flagship D-Max single cab The eighth brand, but the perennial third best-seller behind the Hilux and Ranger, the Isuzu D-Max also rates as the third behind the former pair to offer a cab-and-a-half version called the Extended Cab. While the most recent meet-up with the latter was in 2022 with the range-topping two-wheel-drive LSE, the last drive with a single cab came at the D-Max's long delayed market launch earlier that same year. Interior puts function and ease over style and abundance of tech. Following a line-up expansion in March last year, which saw the 3.0-litre 4JJ3-TCX turbodiesel engine joining the 4JK1-TCX 1.9 that had been the sole option until then, the arrival of a Splash White single cab D-Max late last month presented a unique opportunity of spending more than the usual seven-days with a provided product. This being long-term 'ownership' of the Struandale-built D-Max for the next three months in LS grade, the flagship single cab, equipped with the six-speed automatic available for the first time in any generation 'work'-spec 'D-Max or its KB predecessor. Spec sheet As with The Citizen's other long-term bakkie, the double cab Ford Ranger XLT, the D-Max doesn't have four-wheel-drive available for an additional R81 300. Priced at R590 800, the LS doesn't underdeliver on the spec side despite its workhorse focus. LS rides on 17-inch alloy wheels as standard. Aside from the auto 'box, which comes standard on all 3.0-litre models, its list of features comprises the following: 17-inh alloy wheels; colour coded bumpers, door handles and mirror caps; four-speaker sound system; daytime running lights; cloth seats; dual front airbags; traction control; Hill Descent Control, electric mirrors; auto lock/unlock doors; electric windows; leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel; adjustable driver's seat and steering column; 4.2-inch TFT instrument cluster display rubberised loadbin In-cabin storage is sorted by a cubby on top of the dashboard, a central storage box doing double duty as an armrest, a split glovebox and four cupholders, two located underneath the air vents that also double up as coin trays. Storage comes via a pair of gloveboxes and four cupholders, two being located underneath the air vents. Taking care of the infotainment is Isuzu's smallest system, the seven-inch display with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a single type-A USB port. As for its working credentials, the single cab 3.0-litre LS auto has the same 800 mm wading depth, 3 500 kg tow rating and 227 mm of ground clearance as the rest of the D-Max range, but with a payload of 1 205 kg. Progress Put to the test not long after its arrival, and in between the series of test vehicles, initial impressions needed careful self evaluation given what the single cab represents. As such, the lack of expected niceties such as a reverse camera and rear parking sensors can be seen as expected based on workhorses often lacking both. Isuzu's entry-level seven-inch infotainment system comes standard on the LS. The same applies to the bouncy ride with no load in the back, as well as the typical Isuzu diesel engine clatter. It is, however, the infotainment system that provides the real oddity. Apart from 'freezing' when scrolling through a paylist on the move, which has been done deliberately to avoid distraction, it automatically dims the display with the headlights turned off. Single cab LS has a payload of 1 205 kg and a standard rubberised loadbin. Flicking it on then sees the screen revert to its normal resolution – a scenario never experienced on the bigger nine-inch, which does feature the annoying 'distraction' time-out. The rest of the interior is straightforward, and while hard plastics are the order of the day, they feel solid, while the ergonomics are plain to use from the shortcuts as the base of the infotainment to the physical buttons and dials for the air-conditioning. Stalwart diesel readying to show worth On the move, the venerable N-Series truck derived 3.0-litre engine offers a strong pull that makes the D-Max feels more responsive than what it should feel like. Delivering its 140kW/450Nm to the rear axle only means it feels lighter than what its 1 780 kg kerb mass suggest, however, it remains to be seen how this will be affected with a few 100 kgs loaded onto the back. Seats are trimmed in hard wearing cloth and are manually adjustable. As with the Extended Cab, and also the 1.9-litre-engined X-Rider driven last year, the six-speed automatic 'box varies from acceptable when shifting up, to erratic on the down change with two ratios often being dropped. Fortunately, this is augmented, and negated, by using the manual override and shifting manually with the stubby gear lever, though it stands to reason that this will be of little concern to most buyers just thankful not to row any gears in the first place. LS can only be had with the 140kW/450Nm 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine. Having so far stayed confined to town driving, the 4JJ3-TCX engine's reputation for frugality, despite its displacement and having been extensively revised since the original 4JH1-T debuted in 2002, has so far not shone through. Although nowhere near Isuzu's 7.6 L/100 km claim, a best of 9.7 L/100 km has been amassed, though this has since fallen back to 10.1 L/100 km. More to come Despite its foibles, the D-Max LS has run faultlessly throughout the 343 km it is clocked-up since arriving Hard working tasks, as befitting of a workhorse, is being planned and as such, progress is expected to shift up a notch throughout the remaining two months. Chinese car sales continue to rise in SA and their new-energy vehicles could be a game changer

Chery sold 2 101 new vehicles in June. Chinese car sales continue to rise in South Africa, with more brands looking to enter the market. Chery and GWM were the top selling Chinese manufacturers in June, with the former selling 2 101 new vehicles and the latter selling 2 288, according to data from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa. The two brands ranked sixth and seventh overall in new vehicle sales for the month, only falling behind legacy brands Toyota, Suzuki, Volkswagen Ford and Hyundai. Chery relaunched in South Africa in 2021 and GWM brought its SUV brand, Haval, in the same year. The success of these two paved the way for the likes of Omoda, Jaecoo and Jetour to also enter the country. Omoda and Jaecoo passed the 1 000 vehicle mark in June while Jetour sold 683 new vehicles and Baic sold 232. Many industry watchers believe the price point is the main reason Chinese vehicles are doing so well in South Africa. But Shannon Gahagan, the national brand and marketing manager at Omoda and Jaecoo South Africa, has attributed the success of these brands rather to what is being offered for the price. 'Price is a contributing factor; however, other brands offer vehicles in this price segment that haven't seen the same kind of growth,' Gahagan said. 'Chinese vehicles lie not only in pricing but also in what is offered for that price, such as technology, vehicle styling, and the brand.' Gahagan believes the rise of Chinese vehicles in South Africa has reshaped consumer perception in the country. 'Chinese OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] have shown that tech and innovation don't have to come with a steep price tag. South Africans are embracing the variety of choice and are open to receiving more 'bang for their buck,' which also comes with style and innovation,' she said. (Graphic: John McCann/M&G) Entering the new-energy market By the end of 2024, South Africa's new-energy vehicle (NEV) market was growing at a fast pace, but still not enough to have a meaningful effect on new car sales. Although the segment experienced a 100.6% year-on-year increase in 2024, it made up only 3% of the total new-vehicle market. Range anxiety — the shortage of charging infrastructure — and the price point of fully electric vehicles (EVs) have contributed to the slow growth of NEVs in South Africa. The alternative is plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), which eliminates range anxiety because the vehicle works with both an electric motor and an engine. By the end of 2024, there were no plug-in hybrid vehicles selling for under a million rand but, since April, Chinese manufacturers have released a variety of PHEV into the South African market. BYD released the Sealion 6 in April and other brands followed suit. Omoda and Jaecoo released PHEV variants of the C9 and J7 in June, Chery released the PHEV variant of the Tiggo 7 Pro and Haval released the H6 GT in a PHEV as well. All of these models come in at under a million rand. Gahagan says it is important to allow people with different budgets to enjoy the advancements in the motoring industry. 'As the technology advances and becomes more widely accepted internationally, the pricing is adapting to suit a wider variety of customers. We're also striving to make these technologies more accessible and suitable for various budgets, allowing more customers to experience these advancements,' she told the Mail & Guardian . Chery recently released the Tiggo 7 CSH, a PHEV variant of the famous Tiggo 7 Pro. Trust in Chinese vehicles When Chinese brands entered the market in 2021, a major concern was their reliability. But strong warranties and service plans have shown they veconfidence in their products. Chery released a game changing 10-year or one million kilometre warranty on their engines for the first owner of the vehicle, while offering the usual four year/60 000km service plan and five-year/150 000km vehicle warranty. Omoda and Jaecoo have followed suit with the engine warranty on their vehicles. These manufacturers have now also placed the same amount of confidence in their PHEV vehicles by offering a 10-year/unlimited kilometre power battery pack warranty for the first owner of the vehicle. These strong warranties have helped contribute towards the success of Chinese vehicles in South Africa. In terms of parts, Omoda and Jaecoo have a 98.4% fill at their warehouse. 'We've focused on getting the fundamentals right. Reliable products, strong after-sales support, and local parts availability through our warehouse, ' Gahagan said. 'Our growing sales show that more South Africans are placing their trust in the brand, and as more of our vehicles enter the used market, resale values will start to reflect that confidence.' More models and brands to come to South Africa Chinese manufacturers have been busy in the South African market in 2025. BYD released three new vehicles in April, GWM have expanded their Tank range and P-Series range and also released the new H6 and H6 GT PHEV, Chery just recently updated its Tiggo 7 Pro range with a PHEV variant and its Tiggo Cross range with a hybrid variant and Omoda and Jaecoo also just expanded their range of vehicles. Omoda and Jaecoo are set to release the C7 and J5 later this year, while Chery is to bring its flagship Tiggo 9 PHEV. Chery will also bring a bakkie named Himla to South Africa in 2026. The iCAUR is coming to SA in 2026 Lepas is launching in 2026 A Chery Himla bakkie was revealed in 2025 There are currently 14 Chinese brands in South Africa, but it seems to just be the beginning. Changan, Deepal, Lepas and iCAURr (not an Apple Car) are all also confirmed to release in South Africa in late 2025 and 2026 respectively. Gahagan confirmed that iCAUR will be a NEV brand that will offer a more accessible entry point into the premium electric space.

Is the 2025 Haval H6 HEV the best Chinese car in South Africa?

Is the 2025 Haval H6 hybrid the best Chinese car sold in South Africa? The question hangs in the air like morning mist over the Atlantic seaboard. However, this question about the provenance of Chinese cars in South Africa demands an answer that goes beyond mere speculation. And after spending a week behind the wheel of the R641 500 2025 Haval H6 1.5T DHT in Luxury spec, we find ourselves nodding in the affirmative. You don't need us to remind you there's been a veritable invasion of Chinese cars into South Africa in the last five years. Moreover, the Chinese approach is to have premium marques for each brand, which gives the impression of even more product flooding our roads. For example, Haval is Great Wall Motor's premium brand (hence both badges on this car). And over the years, it's been the Chinese nameplate that European, Japanese and Korean manufacturers have been taking notice of. Image: GWM/Haval Allow us to explain why this particular Chinese car has shifted our perspective on what our BRICS+ partners can achieve. Unarguably the most striking aspect of the 2025 Haval H6 lies in its improvement in what engineers call 'intuitive usability.' Essentially, it's how naturally a driver can interact with the vehicle's control systems. This has always been a Volkswagen Group strength and that's why so many people feel comfortable in 'peoples' cars.' Previously, Chinese cars often suffered from poor interfaces and menus buried within menus. Key functions were scattered across multiple screens, complicated to access, like puzzle pieces waiting to be assembled. Now, however, the 2025 Haval H6 has a user experience (UX) worthy of praise. A 12.3-inch infotainment display responds with smartphone-like fluidity. And the dead-ahead instrument cluster, while slightly small, provides hierarchical information in a logical manner. The learning curve here is measured in minutes rather than days. The Chinese marque's quick adoption of hybrid technology really caught out many of the established car brands in South Africa. Image: GWM/Haval One of the best hybrids we've ever drive is the Honda Fit. And for just R100 000 more you can have similar technology in a full-size SUV. As such, the technical centerpiece of the 2025 Haval H6 HEV vehicle lies in its dual-motive drivetrain. Denoted as DHT (Dedicated Hybrid Technology), it combines a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor. And it isn't transmitted via some forgettable CVT but rather a decent 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. In practice it's a carefully orchestrated system where both power sources work in harmony for either efficiency or performance, depending on driving conditions. In mixed driving scenarios is where the 2025 Haval H6 hybrid shines. The electric motor provides immediate torque for urban acceleration, while the petrol engine seamlessly engages for highway cruising. The transition between modes occurs with such smoothness that passengers often remain unaware. During our testing through stop-start traffic, the system consistently delivered refined performance at low speeds. The claimed fuel economy figure is 5.2 l/100 km, however, a realistic real-world figure is a still-impressive 6.5 l/100 km. Striking good looks and impressive hybrid efficiency keep it top of mind for full-size SUV buyers in South Africa. Image: GWM/Haval One bugbear we'd love to see rectified on the next Haval HEV is quicker access to its regenerative braking modes. There are three settings and its only accessible via the central touchscreen, when paddles or standalone buttons would work much better. The Western Cape's undulating terrain and frequent traffic provide ample opportunities for energy recovery, which the H6 hybrid doesn't always fully utilise. Therefore, the 2025 Haval H6 battery, while adequate, never once reached full charge during our test. Unlike plug-in hybrids that can rely on external charging, the H6's battery depends entirely on engine charging and regenerative braking for replenishment. After a while it just gets disheartening not to see the battery at more the 50-60% no matter how clever you get with your technique. And during extended highway driving, where regenerative braking opportunities are minimal the engine simply works harder to keep you going. Clean, minimalist and concise. A few more hard buttons wouldn't go amiss but, overall, the UX is much improved in the 2025 Haval H6. Image: GWM/Haval However, we cannot fail to highlight 2025 Haval H6 Luxury's excellent cabin. This brand has undergone substantial improvements in build quality since the days of the GWM Florid, which I'm sure many would care to forget for its cavernous trim-gap tolerances. The interior materials feel premium to the touch, with soft-touch surfaces extending across most contact points. Likewise, interior space is absolutely massive, swallowing a surfboard or bicycle (not at the same time) without having to adjust the front row of seats. The cabin remained free from any squeaks, rattles, and creaks during the test period. Of course, this progression extends to all digital elements of the 2025 Haval H6, too. A suite of driver-assistance technologies is made up of adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance systems. Each works with a human-like smoothness most of the time and provides gentle adjustments to control interfaces without much intrusion. Ground clearance is ample, as is interior utility space. As such, there's precious little the new Haval H6 doesn't excel at. Image: GWM/Haval Crucially, at just R641 500, the Haval H6 1.5T DHT Luxury Hybrid represents compelling value in South Africa. This excellent price positions it well below established competitors, while offering technology and refinement levels that often exceed them. The 2025 Haval H6 HEV marks not only a significant milestone but signals the arrival of a truly impressive Chinese car. This combination of sophisticated hybrid drivetrain, dramatically improved UX, a comprehensive technology suite, and solid build quality mean this is indeed the best Chinese car in South Africa.
