After eight decades of running a lauded master's programme, TISS finally added a four-year bachelor's programme last year. Known for giving equal weight to people and practical skills, the institute has recently prioritised the research component by allotting it additional credits.
Learning from an experienced faculty: Thirty-seven professors have spent over two decades teaching and also possess field experience. Last year alone, they collectively published 52 articles in international journals and 40 in national journals, in addition to authoring six books. The pedagogy is designed not just to make lessons engaging but also to encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.
Being on the TISS campus is like being part of a mini India. Of the 251 students admitted last year, 190 came from outside Maharashtra. The diverse environment exposes students to varied cultures and traditions, with classmates from across caste, class and gender lines.
To imbibe the key facets of social work, which include compassion, integrity, intervention and service, students need to be active in the field. Currently, TISS SoSW Mumbai has 300 fieldwork partners across the country—from state government departments and civil society organisations to non-governmental organisations and communities—working to make an impact.
TISS holds credence among various stakeholders, including the government and judiciary. The Bombay High Court recently praised its report on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (South), which examined the impact on fisherfolk, while its professor, Dr Pekham Basu, was appointed to a Supreme Court committee investigating a POCSO-related matter. Additionally, its Field Action Projects, such as the Special Cell for Women initiative, run in collaboration with the Mumbai Police, place and train social workers within the police system to provide psychosocial-legal support to women facing violence. The model has since been replicated in several states.

One was a young officer, the other had just embraced fatherhood - two Indian Air Force pilots were killed after a Jaguar fighter jet crashed in Rajasthan's Churu district on Wednesday afternoon. The aircraft was on a routine training mission when it went down around 1:25 pm in an agricultural field. The tragic incident marks the third Jaguar-related crash in the last five months, raising renewed concerns about the ageing pilots, Squadron Leader Lokender Singh Sindhu (31) and Flight Lieutenant Rishi Raj Singh (23), were both known for their dedication and professionalism. One had just embraced fatherhood, while the other was only beginning what promised to be a bright career in the skies. Their remains were found scattered across the crash site, leaving families, colleagues, and the local community pilots were on a routine training mission when the twin-seater Jaguar crashed. Sindhu belonged to a humble, service-oriented family—his father retired as a university superintendent, while his mother served as a by family and peers as sharp, sincere, and exceptionally dedicated, Sindhu had recently embraced fatherhood. His son was born on June 10, less than a month before the fatal crash. His wife and newborn were at her parental home in Hisar when tragedy who knew him speak of a man who balanced professionalism with warmth—focused in the cockpit, gentle and grounded at home. In his eight years of service, Sindhu had earned not just stripes on his uniform but deep respect in the flying fraternity. A native of Pali in Rajasthan, he had only recently begun his Air Force journey but was already known for his sharp reflexes, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the ill-fated Jaguar with Squadron Leader Sindhu, Rishi was part of a routine training mission when the aircraft went down. Despite the tragedy, locals and eyewitnesses recall that the pilots appeared to have steered the jet away from residential areas—possibly saving many lives on the ground. A twin-seater Jaguar trainer aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in Rajasthan's Churu district on Wednesday afternoon, marking the third Jaguar-related crash this year. The fighter jet, which had taken off from Suratgarh air base, went down in an agricultural field near Bhanoda village around 1.25 pm, according to local authorities. This incident marks the third crash involving a Jaguar aircraft in 2025. Kamlesh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Rajaldesar, confirmed that human body parts were recovered from the crash site, indicating potential fatalities. 'We are coordinating with defence officials and rescue personnel. More details will follow as the investigation progresses,' he said. Third Jaguar Crash in 2025 This incident marks the third crash involving a Jaguar aircraft in 2025, raising concerns about the fleet's operational safety. In April, a twin-seater Jaguar aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Jamnagar Airfield during a night mission. The IAF later reported that the pilots had encountered a technical malfunction mid-flight and ejected to avoid further risk. Squadron Leader Siddharth Yadav tragically succumbed to injuries sustained during the ejection, while the second pilot survived with injuries. A month earlier, in March, another Jaguar crashed near Ambala, Haryana during a training sortie. The pilot safely ejected, and no casualties were reported. The IAF had stated that the pilot steered the aircraft away from populated areas before ejecting, avoiding damage to civilian life and property.
