City comments on tree complaints north of Durban

The Northglen News reported on two tree-falling incidents, the first being in January when a massive tree that collapsed on Mount Argus Road in Umgeni Park knocked down electricity poles and disrupted traffic. The second occurred three weeks ago where a resident's car was damaged.
Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana confirmed the delays, citing multiple contributing factors.
'Yes, there's a backlog regarding tree complaints. This is attributed to a combination of limited resources and the high demand placed on the small team assigned to the area,' she said.
District 3's tree maintenance team services 17 wards, which has placed significant pressure on manpower and equipment. To address the issue, Sisilana revealed that the municipality is in the process of acquiring new equipment to support and expand the capabilities of the existing team.
Following the Northglen News article published on May 9 (Fallen tree leaves resident vulnerable), where a resident's car was damaged, the Northglen News queried about compensation for property damage caused by falling trees or overgrown vegetation.
Sisilana stated that the municipality evaluates claims on a case-by-case basis.
'It depends on the investigation conducted by the department, which is evidence-based. The final decision lies with the insurance company after their own assessment,' she said.
Residents affected by unresolved tree issues are encouraged to continue reporting incidents as the City works to clear the backlog and improve service delivery in the affected wards.
Ward 36 councillor Heinz de Boer said he received complaints about trees daily.
'Complaints about trees hanging onto private property, overgrown trees, trees interfering with streetlights, trees falling and damaging private and municipal structures occur on a daily basis,' he said.
He said he had met with the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department a few months ago where residents' concerns were addressed.
'It's clear that the equipment has not been replaced or upgraded in a long time. The trucks are more than 30 years old, the hydraulic lift leaks hydraulic fluid and there is no wood chipper,' added De Boer.
He said he had requested funding for equipment from municipal management.
'Staff can't be expected to do their jobs without proper equipment,' said De Boer.

Annual show inspires gardeners
THE Kloof Conservancy Indigenous Open Gardens showcase the beauty and importance of indigenous gardening as well as gardening in general. The annual show also helps inspire residents to find new ideas for their gardens. The show on the weekend of June 21/22 was again a huge success with just under 3000 entries to the gardens, with many visitors visiting multiple gardens. More than 50 volunteers helped make the event run smoothly, which enabled visitors to enjoy the hard work done by the six gardeners who lovingly and generously prepared their gardens for the visitors. Also read: Molweni project makes visible impact 'The show is also an important fundraiser for the Kloof Conservancy as it enables the conservancy to run many of its environmental projects. The funds raised at this year's show have been earmarked to support three major projects currently in progress,' said Kloof Conservancy chairman Paolo Candotti. One project that the conservancy is working on is the Mend-the-Molweni project which is making progress in reducing sewage spillages in the streets of Hillcrest and thus reducing pollution into the Molweni River. 'We are also working on The Ingwe Escarpment Project which aims, in partnership with eThekwini Municipality, to create a new proclaimed nature reserve on the southern Kloof Escarpment. 'The third one is the Molweni Eco-club Project which is run in partnership with FreeMe Wildlife which currently has 100 children from five primary schools in Molweni participating in environmental education activities,' said Candotti. He added that another highly successful activity at the Open Gardens was the Nature Facts Treasure Hunt. Children were encouraged to look for clues in the gardens to complete an environmentally meaningful sentence and once they returned the completed form they were given a 'kit' to complete/build something at home such as an insect hotel or a water filter. Firefighters injured while rescuing six from Durban factory blaze

The factory manufactures shoes and sandals in several buildings on Brooklyn Road. In December 2019, a significant portion of the building was destroyed by a fire and has since been rebuilt. The eThekwini Municipality stated that in the early hours of Sunday morning, a fire was reported near the factories, initially thought to have been grass, bush, and/or rubbish on fire. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ In a report on the fire, the eThekwini Municipality stated that a rescue pumper and crew from Mobeni were dispatched, and on approach, the officer observed thick black smoke rising from an industrial site. Realising it was a factory fire, they requested additional resources, said Gugu Sisilana, spokesperson for the eThekwini Municipality. She said visible flames pulsating through the roof of the shoe manufacturing factory confirmed the seriousness of the escalation. Another rescue pumper from Jacobs was dispatched, and due to the intensity of the fire, two more rescue pumpers and a water carrier were also called out. Reports from the fire department stated that the fire had already spread significantly, with intense flames and thick smoke seen from the west-facing front. 'An extension of the same factory on the northern side, used for storing shoe products and machinery, had also ignited. The factory to the south remained protected by favourable winds, and while nearby residential homes to the east weren't threatened by flames, they were heavily affected by smoke,' Sisilana said. She explained that crews quickly established operational objectives: ensuring life safety, containing the fire, and fully extinguishing it. She said that factory managers confirmed all staff had evacuated, and no injuries were initially reported. RESCUE Sisilana said that two hose lines were deployed to prevent further spread when a report came in of persons trapped in the southern factory. Crews acted immediately, rescuing six individuals from the first floor using a ground ladder. Once safely evacuated, teams returned to their positions, and more firefighting trucks arrived, including an aerial appliance, a turntable ladder, and a second water carrier. She said the fire ground crew was divided into four sectors that worked well in coordination, containing the spread and protecting exposures. However, during operations, an explosion erupted from the main structure, triggering partial collapse and a high-pressure flame burst. Although no firefighters were inside, two members sustained second-degree burns and were treated by KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services and transported to the hospital.

Home sweet home for Domino babies
THE six little ones and their dedicated crisis mom and carers at The Domino Foundation's Babies' Home have been given a new temporary address pending a makeover to the roof. The plea for temporary shelter was sent out via social media and community titles a few weeks ago. It was heard and a generous benefactor offered his property of three bedrooms and two bathrooms to the Babies' Home programme as a gift to the children and organisation. Also read: Durban North bus stop gets mural makeover The cherry on top is that the home is less than a kilometre away from the foundation. 'We were prepared for what was going to be a major upheaval, but, when we discovered that we would only have to move down the road, we all heaved a collective sigh of relief. Now, our volunteers, friends and donors will still find us easily, and the two children who go to pre-school can be got there with no extra effort,' said house mother, Precious Thabethe.
