Joe Don Baker, actor known for 'James Bond,' 'Walking Tall' roles, dies at 89
Joe Don Baker, a Hollywood veteran who first rose to fame as tough-talking Sheriff Buford Pusser in "Walking Tall," has died, his family announced. He was 89.
The announcement of his May 7 death, published on Legacy.com by his family May 13, did not cite a cause.
A Texas native and army veteran, Baker infused a real-life sense of southern toughness into his roles. Studying at the Actor's Studio in New York before traveling to Los Angeles to make it to the big screen, he guest spotted on a smattering of television shows before his big break came with "Walking Tall."
The 1973 film, which chronicled the story of a Tennessee sheriff battling to save his hometown from corruption and vice, became an unexpected and overnight hit, propelling Baker to fame.
At 37, his not-yet-noticed acting prowess was suddenly gaining wide acclaim as critics across the country lauded the breakout star of the low-budget, if not thrilling, watch. Baker went on to play a host of characters on either side of the law − both detectives and cops, as well as troubled ex-cons and mafia men.
His roles were not limited to either side of the law enforcement equation, though. Across his almost 60 films, he portrayed several politicians as well as a star baseball player in Robert Redford's "The Natural."
Before his retirement in 2012, he made an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, famed not just for "Walking Tall" but also for "Charley Varrick," in which he played a mafioso, and "Mitchell," which saw him as a no-nonsense detective. Baker also starred in "Fletch" and became a "James Bond" regular, appearing in three 007 films.
Baker, who married Maria Dolores Rivero-Torres in 1969 before the pair divorced 11 years later, has no children.
"He is survived by relations in his native Groesbeck, who will forever cherish his memory. He is mourned by a small but very close circle of friends who will miss him eternally," the obituary posted to Legacy.com reads.
"As we say goodbye to Joe Don, we hold onto the memories and the love he shared with us," it continued. "Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will always remain, a guiding light in the lives he touched. Rest in peace, Joe Don. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten."

"That doesn't make any d*mn sense for Ms. Berry to still have that 'Die Another Day' body after it's been 20+ years since she appeared in that movie," one fan wrote. Others responded to her message in the last slide, writing, "Love you right back, sis! Here's a rose just for you," and "WE LOVE YOU TOOOO!!!!" In a November 2021 interview with Vogue, Berry reflected on the lengthy process of choosing the iconic orange bikini for the film, explaining she tried "so many bikinis and so many belts" before landing on what was seen in the film. "We had a knowing that it would maybe, because it was in a Bond movie, become an iconic situation … something that would live a very, very long time," she said. "The biggest acting challenge I had was to make it look like the water was warm and I was having a grand old time when I was freezing my butt off." Berry has not been shy about sharing swimsuit photos, having recently posted a series of pictures of her in a black and white one-piece swimsuit while vacationing in Joshua Tree, California.

EON Production's James Bond is one of the most popular movie franchises of all time, spanning generations of fans. No Time To Die's ending marked Daniel Craig's final bow as 007, and moviegoers are wondering who will take on the mantle next. One popular fan choice is Kingsman star Taron Egerton, who recently addressed all the chatter about him as the beloved MI6 agent. With Daniel Craig's Bond movies in the rear view, it seems only a matter of time before another actor takes on the role of 007. Egerton has been a popular choice, especially since we've seen him in action spy movies before. In an interview with Collider, the actor was asked if he's down to play the martini-sipping character, and he responded with: No. And I don't think I'm a good choice for it. I think I'm too messy for that. Darn. While he's usually included in the James Bond odds, it sounds like the Rocketman actor isn't actually interested in playing that iconic character. I have to wonder how this will change his ranking among the fans, as well as any bets that are being set about this particular casting. One might wonder exactly why Egerton feels this way. After all, he's done plenty of exhausting action sequences throughout the Kingsman franchise. In the same interview, the Carry-On star spoke more about why he wasn't interested. He said: James Bond is quite an undertaking and I think, one, as far as I'm aware, nobody's asking me to do it. But also, it's possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest. I do think it's a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that. He's not wrong. While Daniel Craig was able to work on a few other projects during his tenure, Bond is a career-consuming role. And that's not necessarily something that Egerton is interested in at this point in his career. Instead, he'd rather take various passion projects that come up. Age-wise, Taron Egerton seems like an excellent choice for 007. He's currently 35 years-old, which is three years younger than Craig was when he debuted in Casino Royale. Alas, Egerton seems to think someone younger should get the gig, as he said: I think I wouldn't be good at it, and I think there's so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably. Well, that's one popular choice who seemingly isn't going to actually be playing 007. Other fan choices include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Richard Madden, Henry Cavill, and Regé-Jean Page. Only time will tell who actually lands the role, and whether or not it's a familiar face. The James Bond franchise is definitely in a transitional period, and for more than its casting. Amazon-MGM are set to produce the next movie, marking a major change in the property. What we know about James Bond 26 is very slim, and it's not expected to arrive on the 2025 movie release list.
