Chelsea sent final transfer message by AC Milan over Mike Maignan transfer

Metro24-06-2025
AC Milan sporting director Igli Tare has insisted that Mike Maignan will not leave the club this summer despite an approach from Chelsea.
Chelsea had explored a deal for Maignan before the Club World Cup as a potential upgrade on their current goalkeepeing options.
The Milan captain, who has one year left on his deal, was keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, but both sides failed to reach an agreement prior to the tournament.
Enzo Maresca's side were only willing to pay around £15million for the French international, while Milan were demanding a fee of at least £20m.
While Chelsea could seek to resurrect a deal later in the window, their chances of success would appear slim after Tare confirmed the club had no intention of letting the 29-year-old leave this summer.

'Maignan is not leaving, he will be at Milan again next season,' Tare told reporters on Tuesday.
'There was interest from a Premier League club but in the end no agreement was found.'
Tare continued: 'Also knowing that Maignan is an important point of reference not only on the pitch, but also off the pitch, we decided to focus on him for next season and to move forward together.
'Football is unpredictable, but for us he remains a point of reference in this team.'
Despite being dropped midway through last season, Robert Sanchez has regained the first-choice spot between the sticks in Maresca's side and has started both of Chelsea's games so far in the Club World Cup. More Trending
The Spaniard will once again face competition from Filip Jorgensen next season, while youngster Mike Penders could also feature after his loan at Genk last season.
Djordje Petrovic enjoyed a fruitful loan spell last season, impressing for French side Strasbourg in Ligue 1, but the Serbian is now set to leave Chelsea this summer after he was left out of Chelsea's squad for the Club World Cup.
Elsewhere, Chelsea are seeking wide attacking reinforcements after they opted to not make Jadon Sancho's loan deal permanent.
The Blues failed with two bids for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens prior to the Club World Cup, but remain confident of agreeing a fee for the Englishman.

'Not a good sight': Rangers ace fires Celtic warning and hails 'new' Ibrox squad after Panathinaikos test

Rangers defender Max Aarons believes the club's new look squad are already showing they have what it takes to compete for the big trophies this season following their gritty win over Panathinaikos in the Champions League second qualifying round. Russell Martin's squad went into the game in Athens with a two goal lead following their 2-0 first leg victory at Ibrox last week, but were forced to dig deep in the Greek capital as the home side put pressure on the Rangers defence in sweltering heat. The 3-1 aggregate victory sets up a Champions League third qualifying round clash with Viktoria Plzeň at Ibrox next week, however, Aarons is convinced the early season tests in Europe will also be of huge benefit to Rangers domestically, as they look to wrestle the Scottish Premiership title from Celtic this season. 'Coming here for the second leg, against a team at the top of their league is always going to extremely difficult. We knew what we were coming into tonight, and a different game to how it was at Ibrox. We had to grind it out. It's so early on in our time here, we've had five weeks with this manager and new players. 'It is definitely a test, and we've come through it. We grew into the first leg, and we grew into the game in this one as well. It is a great test for us, seeing this group can dig in to win, leagues, cup competition - anything - and get as far as you can. You look to the side and know we are going to battle, which is really good to see. It gives us confidence going into the league. This is a real step for the squad especially after being together for just five weeks.' Aarons, who joined on loan from AFC Bournemouth last month, also reserved praise on fellow new signing Gassama, after the French winger's vital goal off the bench. The ex-Sheffield Wednesday man has enjoyed a blistering start to his Rangers career, with two goals in his first two appearances, and Aarons has called on the under-20 international to take his explosive start into their league season, which begins with a visit to Motherwell this Saturday.

Eugenie Bouchard can't stop tears flowing as tennis star retires to take up new sport

Former Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard, 31, was left in tears after a strong showing in the final match of her tennis career at her hometown tournament in Canada Eugenie Bouchard was overcome with emotion as she bid farewell to her tennis career at the Canadian Open. The former world No. 5, who has been largely absent from the sport in recent years, accepted a wildcard for the Montreal event to make her final bow - albeit claiming she would play on if she won the tournament. ‌ Bouchard triumphed in her first match and was leading 17th seed Belinda Bencic in the third set before succumbing to a 6-2 3-6 6-4 defeat. Post-match, tears flowed as she prepared to address the crowd during a poignant on-court ceremony. ‌ "I'll try not to cry," Bouchard promised, despite already having let some tears slip following the match's conclusion. "I think it's so special to play my last match here in Montreal on this court in front of you guys. I remember being a little kid, sitting in these stands, hoping and dreaming that I would play on this court one day. ‌ "I grew up playing on these courts and courts all around Montreal and near here, so it feels like such a full circle moment to finish my career here. Tennis has given me so much, I am filled with so much gratitude for this sport and for the people who helped me along the way." The weight of the occasion was evident as the 2014 Wimbledon finalist struggled to maintain composure while acknowledging her family's role in her career. She added: "I want to thank my family. "Mum, dad, my sisters and brother, for their sacrifice and support. It's only because of that, that I'm standing here today. And I want you guys to know that when this crowd cheers for me, they're cheering for you guys too, because I wouldn't be here without you." Bouchard also took the opportunity to address her supporters in French before being presented with a commemorative photo frame that celebrated her tennis career. Meanwhile, the crowd showed their appreciation with a sign that said 'Merci Genie'. The 31-year-old has been one of Canada's most accomplished tennis players. Her standout year was 2014, when she won her first title in Nuremberg, reached the Wimbledon final, entered the top five in the world rankings and made it to the semi-finals of two other Grand Slams. ‌ However, since that peak, which earned her the WTA's Most Improved Player of the Year award, Bouchard has struggled to maintain that level of performance, facing numerous injuries and taking breaks from the sport. The Canadian star has also ventured into the professional pickleball circuit. Earlier in the month, she announced her intention to retire from professional tennis at her home event. Despite her retirement plans, Bouchard jokingly suggested she might reconsider if she won the Montreal tournament. Although she didn't clinch the title, she gave a strong performance against world No. 20 Bencic, nearly causing an upset by taking her to three sets. When questioned about her certainty on retiring after such a display, Bouchard said: "Everyone keeps asking me that. My sister said she started a petition with fans in the crowd, and everyone signed it, so now I have no choice but to rescind my retirement! "But there's a lot of hard work that goes into tennis. It was great to be able to perform well, but you know, it's such a tough life of sacrifice and hard work. "I've given so much to tennis, and it's given me so much, but I do feel ready to move on from that and do other things in life, but I will forever be grateful for what tennis has given me."
