Got a text about unpaid tolls in West Virginia? DMV says its a scam

Yahoo04-06-2025
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — Have you received a text from the West Virginia DMV saying your 'toll account is unpaid?' You're not alone, and you're most likely not in any trouble either, officials say.
In a release put out Wednesday, the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) warned that scam texts have been going out to the public, warning them that if they don't pay an outstanding balance soon, they could face suspension, license revocation or negative hits to their credit.
'None of it is legitimate,' DMV officials said.
Morgantown says some payments may have been lost in USPS truck fire
The message also includes a link to a website where people can pay the false bill. DMV officials said that the department does not send out texts and urged the public not to click on any links they receive claiming to be from it.
A sample version of the scam can be found below. It should be noted that the referenced 'West Virginia Administrative Code 15C-16.003' is not even a real part of the actual State Code.
'Our system shows that your toll account is still unpaid. According to West Virginia Administrative Code 15C-16.003, if you fail to pay the outstanding amount by June 5, the Department of Motor Vehicles will initiate formal enforcement proceedings starting June 6. Consequences include:1. Violation information will be recorded in the Department of Motor Vehicles enforcement database2. Vehicle registration is suspended3. Driver's license is revoked for at least 30 days4. Mandatory payment of 35% administrative service fee5. Possible legal action and negative credit reportPay Now:'
The West Virginia Parkways Authority put out a similar warning about scam 'E-ZPass' text earlier this year, and the FBI has warned of similar unpaid toll bill scams happening across the country.

Major political scandal led to ethics reform in Tennessee: Notorious Nashville

An invoice scam by a low-level government employee in Memphis led to a police investigation that culminated 20 years ago in a federal probe that brought down some of the state's biggest political figures. A dozen local and state officials were arrested in 2005 on bribery charges and convicted in a case led by the FBI dubbed "Tennessee Waltz," aptly named after the famed song about a stinging betrayal. It remains one of the biggest political scandals in state history. The case is part of the state's infamous past, but its impact stretched across decades with ethics reforms that still serve as guardrails for politicians today. The highest-ranking public servants arrested after betraying their oaths of office include two former state senators from Memphis − John Ford and the late Roscoe Dixon. Ford, the most powerful politician caught in the FBI investigation, was convicted of accepting $55,000 in cash payoffs from an undercover agent posing as a corrupt businessman. Ford's chicanery included shepherding a bill tailored to benefit the fake company − even using the wording proposed by the undercover agent. Dixon was convicted on bribery and extortion charges for accepting $9,500 in bribes to help pass legislation. Police in Memphis initially investigated a tip about an invoice scam in which a contractor for the Shelby County Juvenile Court Clerk's Office accepted money for work never performed. When investigators realized the corruption extended all the way to the state capitol in Nashville, they sought help from the FBI, which has no jurisdictional boundaries. FBI agents created a fake electronics recycling company, E-Cycle, and used informants to infiltrate state government. They also used undercover agents to pay bribes and record conversations with politicians. An FBI agent used the name "Joe Carson" and posed as the head of E-Cycle, meeting with lawmakers, passing out fake business cards, making campaign contributions and hosting a reception with live music for politicians at the Sheraton Nashville Hotel. Federal agents were surprised at how easy it was to bribe lawmakers − and to write a new state bill the politicians were ready to pass that would have favored the fake company. The case lasted more than three years and ensnared politicians in Memphis, Chattanooga and at the state capitol in Nashville. Those convicted and sentenced to prison included: Chris Newton, a former Republican representative from Cleveland; William Cotton, a Democratic Hamilton County commissioner; Charles Love, who had been a member of the Hamilton County school board; and Darrell Catron, a former Shelby County Juvenile Court aide. The FBI sting led to the arrest of a father-son duo from a Memphis political dynasty. Michael Hooks Sr., a powerhouse Democrat and son of a Civil Rights pioneer − pleaded guilty to accepting $24,200 in bribes while chairing the Shelby County Commission. His son, Michael Hooks Jr., pleaded guilty to theft from a federally funded program when he was a Memphis city school board member. The scandal resulted in the creation of new state ethics laws and an independent ethics commission. The Tennessean is publishing a Notorious Nashville story for each year from 2000-2024. In the current situation of the country, one cannot even imagine a fair election – Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman. Islam Sarkar :Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, 'You can see what has happened in Patgram, what is happening. Not just Patgram. They have turned the whole of Bangladesh into a Patgram. In this situation, one cannot even imagine a fair election. How many fundamental reforms must be done for a fair election. We have talked about those reforms. We will implement those reforms. And we will also implement a fair election. If anyone dreams of an election like the Awami Fascist era. I call Almighty Allah as a witness – we will turn that dream into a nightmare.I call Almighty Allah as a witness – we will turn that dream into a nightmare. That dream will not be allowed to come true. No administrative coup will be allowed. No 'Mastantantra' will be allowed at the polling station. No black money game will be tolerated.( If you have any questions you can ask our correspondent Md. Mafidul Islam Sarkar on WhatsApp +8801735-632338) He said these things as the chief guest at a huge public meeting organized by the Metropolitan and District Jamaat at the Rangpur District School Ground in Bangladesh on Friday (July 4) evening. The party held this public meeting demanding the trial of the murderers of the martyrs of the July 24 revolution, including Shaheed Abu Sayeed, creating a level playing field for elections and political reforms, implementing the Teesta Master Plan and building a humane Bangladesh. Stating that many types of conspiracies are being hatched ahead of the next elections, the Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami said, 'We are observing many types of conspiracies ahead of the next elections. We are hearing many types of conversations in the field. We are understanding many types of engineering signs. We remind everyone. This Sheikh Hasina had all the forces in her hands. She had great power. She had installed her own people in places. She ran the state with cadre masters. But when the people's awakening, the people's explosion occurred, no one could protect her. We promise that this fight against fascism will continue as long as the slightest sign of fascism remains in the country. No one can stop our fight until fascism is eradicated. Pointing to the BNP leaders and activists, the Jamaat Amir said, 'The regrettable thing is the life of Abu Sayeed's martyrdom, the life of risking one's life, the life of sacrificing one's life in present-day Bangladesh. Why can't we, the people of Bangladesh, be patient? If we open the pages of newspapers everywhere, stand in front of satellite media, or sit down, we can see the paws of some disgusting people in some area of Bangladesh. I see this paw on the honor of my mother. I see this paw on people's lives. I see this paw on people's property. Even when they have no sense of their own, they do not hesitate to kill their own people. If there had been no uprising by Brother 24, would you have been able to walk in the open air on the land given by Allah? We believe that this movement involves unlimited sacrifice and sacrifice of people from all walks of life. Everyone has been tortured. Scholars and scholars have been murdered. Disappeared. People have been humiliated step by step. The feet of the elderly scholars have been shackled. Handcuffs have been put on them. The feet of the living martyr ATM Azharul Islam have also been shackled. They were a species without manners in the name of politics. They tasted their misdeeds because they did not know manners and left. If anyone else does the same thing, then even more terrible times are waiting for them.' I do not accept anything called minority-numerical guru in Bangladesh, said the Jamaat Amir, 'Those who tortured minorities for 54 years and cried for mercy. I call Almighty Allah as my witness – they are the ones who robbed the property of minorities. I do not accept minority-numerical gurus in my country. Because of this, they have been beaten. Damage has been done. Whoever is born on the soil of this country, they are all equal. Our constitution has given that right to everyone. We promise – we will be the guardians of what the constitution will give to Bangladesh, Insha Allah. They owned the state, and we will be its servants.' The Jamaat Amir said, 'Abu Saeed has left the world in thousands. He has left behind an education. He has raised his voice that our struggle will continue. That is why they have said that the movement will continue until a humane society without discrimination is created. Their slogan is – Abu Saeed is impressed, the war is not over. Abu Saeed's companions, wake up once. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

Bangladesh tribunal sentences Hasina to jail for contempt over a claim she had a license to kill

DHAKA, Bangladesh -- A special tribunal has sentenced Bangladesh's former leader Sheikh Hasina to six months in jail after she was found in contempt of court for allegedly claiming she had a license to kill at least 227 people. Wednesday's sentence was the first in any case against Hasina since she fled to India during a mass uprising last year that toppled her 15-year rule. The contempt case stemmed from a leaked audio recording of a supposed phone conversation between Hasina and a leader of the student wing of her political party. A person alleged to be Hasina is heard on the audio saying: 'There are 227 cases against me, so I now have a license to kill 227 people.' The Criminal Investigation Department confirmed the audio's authenticity through forensic analysis. The recording showed Hasina's anger at the charges of murder and numerous other crimes against her under the interim administration of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, who vowed to punish Hasina and her top aides for the deaths of hundreds of people in the uprising against her. The sentencing by the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal came as a trial against her being held in absentia on charges of crimes against humanity began in June. The tribunal had ordered Hasina and her former home minister to respond by May 15. When they failed to do so, the tribunal summoned them May 25 to appear in court June 16. Later the tribunal asked for notices to be published in newspapers asking Hasina to appear. The prosecution said later neither of the suspects appeared before the court or explained their absence through a lawyer. In such circumstances, the tribunal has the authority to issue a sentence under the law. Hasina and her Awami League party had earlier criticized the tribunal and its prosecution team for their connection with political parties, especially with the Jamaat-e-Islami party. The Yunus-led government has banned the former ruling Awami League party and amended laws to allow for the party to be prosecuted for its role during the uprising. In February, the U.N. human rights office estimated that up to 1,400 people may have been killed in Bangladesh over three weeks in the crackdown on the student-led protests against Hasina, who was the country's longest serving prime minister. The tribunal was established by Hasina in 2009 to investigate and try crimes involving Bangladesh's independence war in 1971. The tribunal under Hasina tried politicians, mostly from the Jamaat-e-Islami party, for their actions during the nine-month war against Pakistan. Aided by India, Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina's father and the country's first leader.
