'Atrocious' plans for 12-year-old girl to make boxing debut halted

Metro7 days ago
Boxing officials have scuppered 'atrocious' plans for a schoolgirl aged just 12 to make her professional boxing debut in Mexico this weekend.
Romina 'La Bambita' Castan was set to make her professional debut on Saturday night in Veracruz – just a month after finishing primary school. The four round fight was scheduled to be fought at 'atomweight' – the smallest weight class in the sport with a limit of 7st 4 lbs.
Castan took up boxing at the age of eight, following in the footsteps of her father, former fighter Isaac 'Bamba' Castan, and has fought more than 50 times at various youth amateur events.
While Saturday's fight was sold as a historic occasion aiming to break the Guinness World Record for youngest ever professional boxer, the plans have now been halted by boxing authorities.
Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council, one of the sport's four sanctioning bodies and the most influential, revealed on Friday he had personally intervened to try and stop the fight happening.
Sulaiman accused the fighter's father of 'making all kind of threats', labelling the situation an 'atrocity'.
'The WBC is absolutely against a proposed fight in which a 12 year old girl is to make her pro debut in Veracruz , Mexico,' he wrote.
'I personally called the promoter and he is dealing with the fighter's father who is making all kinds of threats. I will do everything possible to stop this from happening.
'We all thought it was a joke! We will fight to the bitter end to stop this atrocity.'
Hours later, Sulaiman confirmed the WBC had successfully stopped the fight from taking place, vowing to work with Castan and her father in guiding her career.
'I'm happy to inform that 12 year old Romina Castan will not fight tomorrow. The WBC will guide her father and support her amateur career.'
The boxing promotion behind Castan's planned debut has also confirmed tonight's plans have been shelved.
The promotion said in a statement: 'Tigre's Boxing Promotion reports to all media and public in general: regarding the facts that have occurred about the professional debut of our boxer Romina Castan this Saturday, July 26th at Benito Juarez Auditorium.
'We appreciate the intervention of Mauricio Suleiman and the support he will provide to the young boxer, being now part of the WBC family. More Trending
'In good time Romina Castan Lara the support in your career as a boxing woman continues with our promoter and now with full support of the WBC.'
In the UK and United States, boxers are not allowed to hold a professional licence until the age of 18. Young fighters are free to explore opportunities elsewhere however with Rianna Doforo making her debut at 15 against a 39-year-old opponent in Mexico in 2023.
16-year-old Callum Dan meanwhile made his debut in Thailand in April.
Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, one of the biggest names in the sport, made his professional debut in Mexico at the age of 15.

Ex-Manny Pacquiao rival gives verdict on controversial Mario Barrios draw

Former Manny Pacquiao opponent Shane Mosley believes the veteran should have been a champion again following the Filipino 's controversial draw with WBC welterweight title holder Mario Barrios. Eight-division champion Pacquiao returned to boxing aged 46 after four years away from the sport, and despite fears that a ring-rusted veteran would be handily defeated by a younger, more active opponent, many had 'Pac Man' down as winning the fight earlier this month. The judges did not agree, with two scoring it an even 114-114, whilst another had Barrios as winning 115-113. All three judges were in agreement that Barrios had done enough to take the final three rounds, indicating that the stamina of youth played a part. That majority draw decision enabled Barrios to retain his 147lbs title, his second successful defence since being upgraded to full champion by the WBC in 2024. Mosley, who lost to Pacquiao via unanimous decision when he challenged the Filipino for the WBO welterweight title in 2011, believed that the bout was close but had his former opponent winning. The three-division champion shared how he had enjoyed the fight, even if the result was perhaps not to his liking. He told FightHub TV: 'I thought the fight was pretty close and you know, I thought that was a close fight but maybe Manny did edge it. I mean he [Barrios] was the champion and I don't know, I just think it was a good fight. 'I like both guys and I do like Manny. Manny is a great fighter and has a great mind and everything so he probably did win.' Having seen Pacquiao's own return to the ring, Mosley has stated that he is contemplating coming out of retirement at age 53. He also shared how he was targeting a rematch with Pacquiao, telling Seconds Out: 'The motivation is to prove people wrong. To let them know that I'm the best. Sugar Shane Mosley is still here. I'm not an old grandpa, I'm still available and ready to fight. Manny Pacquiao is 46 years old, he just fought to a draw, people thought he won or whatever, he's proving that age is just a number. It's your mentality. I want to prove that. 'Actually, I want to fight Manny Pacquiao next, and then the winner fights Floyd Mayweather. I want to show the world I'm still here. You can't get rid of me. When I want to leave, I'll leave. I'm not ready to leave. I love boxing, 100% percent.' Team Jake Paul get cocky as Anthony Joshua super fight comes with astonishing confidence

The Youtube star-turned fighters camp insist a showdown with Joshua is very much on the cards Jake Paul's management team have confirmed that discussions over a huge crossover fight with Anthony Joshua are ongoing. ‌ And the Youtuber-turned boxer's camp also claim that the 28-year-old will have no problem weighing in on the heavyweight scales. ‌ Since turning professional in 2020, Paul has won 12 of his 13 bouts, losing a points decision to Tommy Fury two and a half years ago. ‌ His record includes victories over former WBC middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and ageing heavyweight legend Mike Tyson but the American star is yet to share the ring with an active fighter. Two-time heavyweight world champion Joshua is searching for an opponent later this year as he recovers from an injury picked up in the aftermath of his devastating knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois last September. And while talk of a long-awaited Joshua v Tyson Fury showdown lingers, Most Valuable Promotions CEO and co-founder Naiksa Bidarian insists their man facing the 2012 Olympic gold medallist at some point this year is genuinely on the cards. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "The fight can absolutely happen. Two of AJ's losses came against (Oleksandr) Usyk. Usyk weighed 220lbs for those fights. "Jake is not Usyk. But Jake fought (Mike) Tyson at 228lbs. "So size wise, we can get comfortable. We're actively discussing it." ‌ Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn recently stated that Paul will be in for a rude awakening if he decides to step into the ring with big-hitter Joshua. He told talkSPORT: "Look, he's calling out Gervonta Davis, who is a 135-pound lightweight, and he's calling out Anthony Joshua, that's a heavyweight monster. ‌ "I think Jake Paul is crazy enough to fight Anthony Joshua because the money would be absolutely obscene. "It's a catastrophic mismatch that people would tune in to watch because it would lead to the end of Jake Paul. "Hopefully, not literally, but it's that dangerous. "It's a fight that I don't think should really happen if I'm honest."

‘It's dangerously insane' – Former world champ fears for Jake Paul's health amid Anthony Joshua fight talks

FORMER world champion Tony Bellew has hit out at the "dangerously insane" idea of Jake Paul fighting Anthony Joshua. YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul audaciously called out two-time heavyweight champ AJ earlier in the year. Advertisement 4 Anthony Joshua is in talks to fight Jake Paul It sparked a back-and-forth exchange between the two behind-the-scenes - paving the way for genuine talks between the two camps. Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed they are interested with Paul's promotional partner Nakisa Bidarian also open for talks. And with Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshkih too on board - the shock fight could become a reality. But Bellew, who held the WBC cruiserweight title, told iFL TV: "Money talks and bulls*** walks, we all know that phrase we've all seen it. It's absolute lunacy. It's insane. It's dangerously insane." Paul, 28, has 12 wins and just one loss as a boxer, coming against Tommy Fury, 26, via split-decision in 2023. His last win was in June against former middleweight world champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39, in a cruiserweight bout. Paul made his heavyweight debut last November when Mike Tyson controversially made a comeback at 58 to lose over eight rounds. Joshua, 35, was 18st for his last bout in September when he was knocked out by Daniel Dubois, 27, still four stone heavier than Paul. Advertisement 'I'm not joking' - Boxing champion sensationally backs Jake Paul to KO heavyweight star Anthony Joshua So Bellew - who retired in 2018 - hit out at the fight and suggested AJ should instead face Canelo Alvarez. He said: "It's madness. It's frighteningly mad. It's scary how dangerous it is. "I got asked this on DAZN - and it will come out soon - Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul is the biggest fight in boxing. "I said, no it's not. Do you want to know a bigger fight to make? Canelo and Anthony Joshua. It is. Advertisement "You're talking about two of the faces of boxing. Canelo's gone through that many weight divisions he may as well just try one of the heavyweights. Why not?" Canelo, 35, is the undisputed super-middleweight king who faces unbeaten American Terence Crawford, 37, on September 13 in Las Vegas. And although he is an all-time great, the Mexican superstar fights at the 12st limit, a staggering seven stone lighter than AJ. Canelo has won titles at light-heavyweight - which is 175lb (12st 7lb) - and has teased a move to cruiserweight but never heavyweight.
