Microsoft in Brazilian antitrust regulator's crosshairs after Opera complaint
By Foo Yun Chee
BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Brazil's antitrust enforcer CADE has opened an investigation into Microsoft, days after Norwegian browser Opera complained about Microsoft's Edge, according to a CADE statement published late Thursday on its website.
Opera, in its complaint filed on Tuesday, alleged that Microsoft pre-installs Edge as the default browser across Windows devices and computers, thereby preventing rivals from competing on the merits of the products.
Opera had 6.78% of the Brazilian desktop browser market in June versus Edge's 11.52% and market leader Google Chrome's 75%.
CADE said it had opened an administrative inquiry and set an August 15 deadline for Microsoft to respond to Opera's allegations about its Windows operating system licences, the Microsoft 365 software and its Jumpstart programme.
The Jumpstart programme allows Microsoft clients to build autonomous artificial intelligence agents for routine tasks, a move which could help the company monetise its billion-dollar investments in AI. Other Big Tech companies have similar tools.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment.
Opera has been complaining about its competitor since December 2007 when it took its grievance about the latter's internet Explorer browser bundled with its Windows operating system to the European Commission, resulting in a 561-million-euro ($640 million) fine for the U.S. tech giant.

Prediction: Nvidia Stock Will Soar in the Second Half of 2025, Thanks to This Incredible News From Microsoft and Meta Platforms

Key Points Artificial intelligence (AI) is the driving force behind Nvidia's blistering growth, but investors have been wary about the future of AI. Meta Platforms and Microsoft just reported blockbuster results, which illustrate the staying power of AI. There's another catalyst that could fuel Nvidia's run in the second half of the year. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has been the poster child for the AI revolution, with the stock on a marathon that has increased its stock price by more than 1,000% since the dawn of artificial intelligence (AI) in early 2023. In recent months, however, investors have been more circumspect, plagued by a moratorium on AI chip sales to China and the potential impact of broad-based tariffs on the economic landscape. Furthermore, the ebbs and flows of AI adoption have some investors concerned that the low-hanging fruit has been picked and the AI revolution will stall. Experts generally agree that the adoption of AI, in some form or fashion, will continue well into the next decade, but investors have been seeking reassurance. Two of Nvidia's largest customers released their respective quarterly financial reports after the market close on Wednesday. Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) each reported blockbuster results, providing compelling evidence that the AI revolution is on track. The results speak for themselves Nvidia is scheduled to report the results of its fiscal 2026 second quarter (ended July 27) after the market close on Aug. 27. In the meantime, shareholders are looking for signs that the adoption of AI continues unfettered. Microsoft and Meta just provided exactly what investors were looking for. As the world's largest software company and second largest cloud infrastructure provider, Microsoft holds a unique place in the tech landscape. Furthermore, the company was quick to recognize the AI opportunity and pivoted to position itself accordingly. As a result, Microsoft has been reaping the rewards by providing a growing number of AI solutions to its vast customer base. During its fiscal 2025 fourth quarter (ended June 30), Microsoft generated revenue of $76.4 billion, rising 18% year over year. At the same time, its diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $3.65 climbed 24%. For context, analysts' consensus estimates were calling for revenue of $73.9 billion and EPS of $3.37, so Microsoft cleared both hurdles with ease. The results were fueled by Azure Cloud, as its growth rate accelerated to 39%, well ahead of the 34% expected by Wall Street. CEO Satya Nadella left no doubt about what was driving the results. "Cloud and AI is the driving force of business transformation across every industry and sector," he said. He went on to note that Azure Cloud surpassed $75 billion in revenue, fueled by strong demand for AI. Meta Platforms was also quick to recognize the opportunity afforded by AI, tapping into its wellspring of data to create its homegrown Llama AI models. The company has been spending heavily to capitalize on the AI windfall. In the second quarter, Meta delivered revenue of $47.5 billion, up 22% year over year, resulting in EPS of $7.14, a 38% increase. The consensus on Wall Street was revenue of $44.83 billion and EPS of $5.89, so Meta sailed past expectations with plenty of room to spare. In prepared remarks, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, "The strong performance this quarter is largely thanks to AI unlocking greater efficiency and gains across our ads system," noting these systems drove "roughly 5% more ad conversions on Instagram and 3% on Facebook." It also wasn't surprising that AI is helping its social media platforms stay relevant. "AI is significantly improving our ability to show people content that they're going to find interesting and useful," Zuckerberg said. Nvidia's future looks bright It has been abundantly clear that Nvidia's meteoric rise is the direct result of the accelerating adoption of AI. Once known primarily for its gaming expertise, Nvidia's graphics processing units are now the gold standard for processing AI -- which is evident in its recent results. In Nvidia's fiscal 2026 first quarter, revenue of $44 billion surged 69% year over year, but that only tells part of the story. The company's data center segment, which includes AI chips, soared 69% to a record $39 billion, now accounting for 89% of Nvidia's considerable revenue. That helps explain why investors are so keen to understand whether AI has room to run. The future looks bright, as Nvidia is guiding for second-quarter revenue of $45 billion, or year-over-year growth of 50%. One of the biggest factors weighing on Nvidia in recent months is the Trump Administration's moratorium on H20 AI chip sales to China. CEO Jensen Huang recently announced that the company had filed an application that would permit Nvidia to resume selling those chips in China, and was assured that those licenses would be granted. The company took a $4.5 billion charge related to its H20 chips in the first quarter, but analysts estimate Nvidia could now generate additional sales of $15 billion in the back half of 2025. Furthermore, while Nvidia keeps its customer list under lock and key, analysts with Bloomberg and Barclays Research have read the tea leaves and concluded that Nvidia's four biggest customers -- responsible for nearly 53% of its revenue -- are: Microsoft: 15% Meta Platforms: 14% Alphabet: 12% Amazon: 11% The robust results generated by Microsoft and Meta Platforms offer clear and compelling evidence that the adoption of AI continues unfettered, and as two of Nvidia's biggest customers, that bodes well for the company's ongoing success. Finally, at just 31 times next year's expected earnings, Nvidia stock is reasonably priced. That's why I predict Nvidia stock will probably soar for the rest of 2025. This Is How Much AMZN, GOOGL, MSFT, and META Will Spend on AI This Year

Big Tech companies are ramping up their spending on artificial intelligence, with Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), and Meta (META) expecting a combined total of $364 billion in capital expenditures for 2025. This is a sharp increase from their prior forecast of $325 billion earlier this year. Nevertheless, despite the massive spending, investor reactions were mostly positive, with shares of Meta, Microsoft, and Alphabet rising after their recent earnings reports showed strong results. Microsoft led the group with $88.7 billion in capital expenditures for Fiscal 2025, which exceeded its earlier projections. Separately, Meta raised the lower end of its spending outlook for a new range of $66-$72 billion. This was due to aggressive AI data center investments and talent recruitment. In addition, Alphabet boosted its estimate from $75 billion to $85 billion, thanks to strong demand for its Google Cloud services. As a result, analysts responded positively, with Wedbush raising Meta's price target to $920, RBC lifting Microsoft's to $640, and Needham increasing Alphabet's to $220. However, Amazon was the outlier, with its shares falling despite forecasting $118.5 billion in spending. The drop was due to worries about weaker operating income guidance at Amazon Web Services, even as its AI business grows at triple-digit annual rates. Interestingly, though, while AI investments are making many investors optimistic, some market observers, including Apollo's Torsten Sløk and short-seller Jim Chanos, warn that an AI bubble could form that surpasses the dot-com era. Which Big Tech Stock Is the Better Buy? Turning to Wall Street, out of the four stocks mentioned above, analysts think that AMZN stock has the most room to run. In fact, AMZN's average price target of $259.87 per share implies more than 20% upside potential. On the other hand, analysts expect the least from META stock, as its average price target of $850.98 equates to a gain of 13.4%.

I missed Nvidia – could this be the next big US growth stock?

Let's be honest — most of us missed the boat on Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA). And by the time we realised just how vital graphics processing units (GPUs) would become to artificial intelligence (AI), the share price had already soared into the stratosphere. Over the past five years, the stock has climbed almost 1,600%. In the last six months alone, it's up almost 50%, adding over $1.5trn to its market value. It's now the most valuable company in the world, overtaking Microsoft and Apple in June. I have exposure to the stock through several ETFs and investment trusts, so I didn't entirely miss out on the action. But I certainly made nowhere near the gains I would have had I bought individual shares. Which makes me wonder, how did Nvidia get here, and what stock could be next? Crunching the numbers The numbers behind the hype are jaw-droppingly impressive. For the fiscal year ending January 2025, revenue reached $130bn, a staggering increase from $27bn just two years ago. Net income exploded from $4.3bn in 2022 to more than $70bn this year. And its margins are enormous — a return on equity of 115% and gross margins consistently above 70%. Yet despite the parabolic growth, I don't think it's entirely overvalued yet. In fact, I still think it's worth considering as a long-term investment. It's a world-class company with room to expand further and the global AI arms race is just getting started – with Nvidia at its core. Realistically, though, the biggest gains have already been made. Buying now means betting on continued dominance that may already be priced in, which is a risk. The stock trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 45 – not outrageous considering its growth, but not cheap either. So where should investors look if they want to catch the next killer growth stock before it becomes a trillion-dollar giant? Could SymphonyAI be next? One company on my radar is SymphonyAI, a private US firm reportedly preparing for a Nasdaq IPO later this year. It's not yet listed, but when it does go public, I'll be watching closely. Founded by billionaire Romesh Wadhwani, it specialises in applying AI to specific industry verticals – retail, finance, manufacturing, and healthcare. It doesn't build chips like Nvidia, but it builds the enterprise software that helps businesses harness AI to improve decision-making and productivity. Unlike many AI startups, SymphonyAI already has real revenues and customers. Its retail division serves over 1,200 brands, while its industrial arm works with giants like Nestlé and ArcelorMittal. While financials are still private, it reportedly generates hundreds of millions in annual revenue and is growing fast. If the IPO goes ahead this autumn, it could be one of the most closely watched tech listings of the year. Long-term mindset Nvidia's success was powered by timing, technology, and a growing reliance on data. It may still reward shareholders but the days of 10x returns are likely behind us. SymphonyAI might never reach Nvidia's heights but it could offer early-stage exposure to enterprise AI – the next leg of this growth story. If the valuation is right, it could turn out to be a once-in-a-decade opportunity. The post I missed Nvidia – could this be the next big US growth stock? appeared first on The Motley Fool UK.
