Fanduel owner cuts US profit forecast on gamblers' winning streak

Yahoo07-05-2025
DUBLIN (Reuters) -Fanduel-owner Flutter cut its forecast for full-year U.S. profit growth on Wednesday after a winning streak for gamblers hit earnings at the world's largest online betting company for the second quarter in a row.
Bookmakers tend to suffer when favourites win and Flutter expects U.S. core profit to be $180 million lower this year at $1.13 billion due to an unprecedented run of bettor-friendly results during the March Madness college basketball tournament.
Flutter nudged up its group-wide profit forecast to $3.18 billion from $3.16 billion in March following a $100 million positive foreign currency impact and a $120 million acquisition contribution not included previously.

Kazakhstan oil exports via Black Sea ports resume after temporary halt

Kazakhstan's oil exports through Black Sea ports have resumed following a brief halt, as Russia's FSB security service begins granting clearance to foreign tankers, reported Reuters, citing four unnamed industry sources. The exports had been suspended for nearly one day, causing a disruption that affected around 2% of the global oil supply and drove prices to nearly $70 a barrel before gains were pared. Russian regulations stipulate that foreign ships must obtain approval from the FSB to enter the country's ports. This requirement follows a new law signed by President Vladimir Putin, which came into effect subsequent to the EU's decision to impose additional sanctions on Russia due to its activities in Ukraine. Foreign tankers were reportedly temporarily barred from loading at Russia's main Black Sea ports, effectively halting oil exports from Kazakhstan via the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC). The CPC, which connects Kazakhstan's oilfields with export markets, includes Chevron and ExxonMobil among its shareholders. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan's Energy Ministry disclosed that pipeline operator KazTransOil was negotiating with the oil terminal owner regarding operations and extra security measures at Russia's Ust-Luga port in the Baltic Sea. However, the ministry did not provide further details. An industry source familiar with the situation mentioned that the discussions pertained to additional costs for Russian insurance coverage and diver inspections. For August, Black Sea CPC Blend oil exports from the CPC terminal in Russia were set at 1.66 million barrels per day, roughly 6.5 million tonnes (mt), which is almost the same as the July export plan. Industry sources anticipate that exports and oil transit via Novorossisk will reach around 2.2mt in July. The combined supplies from Novorossisk and the CPC terminal account for approximately 2% of global oil supplies. Kazakhstan's oil production in the first half of 2025 surged by approximately 11.6% to 49.9mt, compared to the same period in 2024. Adding to the international oil market's concerns about supply, bp has announced that contaminants were found in some oil tanks at Turkey's BTC Ceyhan terminal. Despite this, the company confirmed that loading operations were continuing from other reservoirs. ECB survey sees lower inflation, 2% over the longer term

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Euro zone inflation may be lower this year and next than previously expected and will remain around the European Central Bank's 2% target in the longer term, the ECB's Survey of Professional Forecasters showed on Friday. Inflation has come down quickly over the past years and now hovers around the 2% target, a key reason why the ECB left interest rates unchanged on Thursday and hinted that it was not in any hurry to cut rates any further after halving its main rate to 2% from 4% since June 2024. Inflation is now seen averaging 2% this year, below the 2.2% predicted three months ago, and will then slow to 1.8% next year, below a previous expectation for 2%, the survey, a key input in policy deliberations, indicated. "Tariffs were expected to have a small downward impact (on inflation) in the nearer term but to be broadly neutral on balance in 2027 and over the longer-term horizon," the ECB said. The dip below target is likely to be temporary, however, and price growth will then return to 2% in subsequent years, then stay at the bank's target even in the longer term, defined as 2030, the survey showed. Steady inflation around 2% and relatively healthy economic growth is why some policymakers are starting to doubt if more rate cuts are needed and financial markets see only a 50% chance of another cut in the current easing cycle. Economic growth is also likely to be a bit quicker than predicted, accelerating to 1.1% this year, above the 0.9% seen earlier, the survey indicated. Growth has been expected to take a big hit this year from trade tensions with the United States but the first half of the year was somewhat stronger than previously thought, indicating economic resilience. Unemployment expectations remained broadly unchanged and the jobless rate is seen at 6.3%, dipping to 6.2% over the longer term.

UnitedHealth complies with DOJ criminal, civil requests, filing shows

July 24 (Reuters) - UnitedHealth on Thursday publicly confirmed it was under investigation by the Department of Justice and said it was complying with both criminal and civil requests from the federal agency. The disclosure was made in a regulatory filing, marking a shift in tone for the healthcare conglomerate, which earlier this year amid media reports of a civil as well as criminal investigation, said it was unaware of any new probes and denied wrongdoing. The company said it proactively reached out to the Department of Justice after reviewing the media reports about its participation in the Medicare program, and that it is committed to cooperating with federal authorities. The DOJ did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. More: UnitedHealth accused of secret nursing home payments to cut hospital transfers Shares of UnitedHealth slipped 3.5% in early trading, continuing a major slide that has seen the stock shed over 40% of its value this year, amid growing investor frustration over management missteps. The Wall Street Journal has published a series of reports stating that the DOJ was investigating UnitedHealth's Medicare business, a U.S. government program that covers medical costs for individuals aged 65 and older and those with disabilities. "There's just been several instances especially this year where they've (UNH) kind of had to walk back things that they've said or the company (is) obscuring some of the details… that's become very frustrating for investors," James Harlow, senior vice president at Novare Capital Management said. UnitedHealth said it has full confidence in its practices and noted that independent audits by CMS have ranked its methods among the most accurate in the industry. More: UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty stepping down due to 'personal reasons' The company also pointed to favorable decision from a court-appointed special master in a decade-long civil challenge by the department to aspects of its Medicare Advantage business, which concluded that there was no evidence to support claims of wrongdoing. analyst Lisa Gill said in a note that UnitedHealth's "proactive" approach to work with regulators was not surprising. She said that under the False Claims Act, the burden of proof would fall squarely on the DOJ. UnitedHealth also said it has launched its own initiative to conduct third-party reviews of policies, practices, associated processes and performance metrics for risk assessment coding, managed care practices and pharmacy services.
