Rise, Fall, and Flux: Indian football's administrative timeline

The Hindu3 days ago
Indian football enjoyed its golden era from 1951 to 1962, and those who witnessed those times often reminisce fondly about the days gone by. However, nostalgia aside, football in the country did not follow the most professional approach back then, with most clubs playing in state leagues or select nationwide tournaments.
Here's a brief look at Indian football's journey from glory to stagnation
1996 First steps
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) decided to overhaul the domestic structure by launching the country's first national league, a semi-professional tournament called the National Football League (NFL). It began with 12 teams spread across two zones (West and East), with matches played at neutral venues.

2006 Popularising the game
One of the main challenges the AIFF faced was ensuring that football reached a wider audience. In September 2006, it signed a 10-year television and media contract with Zee Sports to broadcast the upcoming new I-League, along with other AIFF-organised tournaments and select international matches of the Indian national team.
2007 Going pro
After 11 seasons of the NFL, the AIFF moved to further professionalise the sport by launching the I-League in 2007. It adopted a more traditional format, where teams played home and away fixtures.
2010 Breakdown of the partnership
Despite the 10-year contract, the AIFF terminated the deal in 2010, just four years in, due to differences between the two parties regarding payment and marketing.
2011 Start of the Reliance era
After Zee Sports, the AIFF brought Reliance Industries on board. It signed a new 15-year, ₹700 crore deal with Reliance and the International Management Group (IMG).

2013 Birth of the ISL
Around the same time, franchise-based leagues were gaining popularity in India, especially following the success of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Taking a cue from this model, the AIFF, with Reliance's backing, launched the Indian Super League (ISL) on October 21, 2013.
2014 Initial years
Despite the ISL's fresh approach to Indian football, it initially lacked official recognition from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and FIFA. The I-League remained India's official league, meaning ISL teams were not eligible to qualify for the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup.

2016 Pitch queens
The Indian Women's League (IWL) was launched with six teams to provide a national league for women's football. Earlier, the top competition was the Senior Women's National Championship, the women's equivalent of the Santosh Trophy. IWL winners qualify for the AFC Women's Champions League.
2017 Home stage
India made its debut in the the men's edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup as the host but finished bottom of the group, failing to reach the knockouts.
2019 Change in setup
After discussions between the AIFF and the AFC on the future roadmap of Indian football, the ISL was granted the status of the premier league competition in the country. This change allowed the ISL champion to represent India in the AFC Champions League playoffs, while the I-League winner earned a spot in the AFC Cup playoffs.
After winning the 2022–23 I-League title, Punjab FC became the first team to gain automatic promotion to the ISL
2022 A new addition
Following further AFC recommendations, the AIFF announced that from the 2022–23 season, the I-League champion would gain automatic promotion to the ISL without having to pay a participation fee. However, the promoted team would need to meet the national club licensing criteria set by the AIFF. After winning the 2022–23 I-League title, Punjab FC became the first team to gain automatic promotion to the ISL. Meanwhile, India hosted the 2022 edition of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup but once again failed to progress beyond the group stage. The tournament was originally scheduled for 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
2023 I nternational woes
India made its third AFC Asian Cup appearance since 1996 but once again failed to progress beyond the group stage, as in 2011 and 2019. In the Asian Games, the team's best result since its Golden Era golds in 1951 and 1962 remained a Round of 16 finish — achieved in 2010 and 2022.

Gadkari's remarks call for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat 2047' reality check

It is quite rare for an incumbent Union minister to openly admit that, at times, statistical figures may not always reflect the ground realities. It takes guts for a minister to come up with facts that debunk theories floated by the government in power as regards claims about achievements and 'steady' economic growth. Although, on the face of it, India has this year pipped Japan to emerge as the world's fourth-largest economy in terms of GDP, the fact of the matter is that the country is yet to come out of the shackles of economic inequality. UNDP's latest report on Asia-Pacific Human Development states that the addition of around 40 billionaires has taken their count to 143, while, in these intervening years, 46 million Indians have been pushed to the BPL strata. One must give it to the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who, on Saturday, dared to come up with some chilling facts and figures that are in stark contrast to the lofty claims of the NDA government at the Centre, which continues to harp on the 'fastest growing major economy' tag. Their projections appear as if the country is doing 'wonderfully well' across sectors, even as the government remains silent on the darker side of the 'vibrant' economy. Expressing concern over the 'rising' number of poor, and wealth getting concentrated in the hands of a limited number of people, Gadkari was bang on with his call for decentralisation of wealth. While lauding former prime ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Dr Manmohan Singh for pursuing growth-oriented economic policies, Gadkari cautioned against unchecked centralisation and the imbalances in sectoral contributions to the GDP. Underscoring the need to focus on creating jobs and uplift the rural folk, he noted, 'There is a need for decentralisation of wealth. Agriculture, despite engaging 65-70 per cent of the rural population, contributes only around 12 per cent.' The minister was not being critical but speaking his heart out, while putting things in their right perspective. Disparity exists even among Indian states, many of which are 'prosperous' while in other States, people continue to stare at abject poverty, Notwithstanding the fact that the country's per capita income has risen from $442 to $2,389 in the last 20 years, the reality is that whatever income and wealth that was generated in these two decades has been garnered by a miniscule section of the population (the elite class) while the misery of the poor has turned nightmarish, despite a multitude of government-sponsored welfare schemes. Many economists assert that the disparity has widened since 2017 following the introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and lowering of the corporate tax rate. Irrespective of the reasons behind the GST move, one must not forget that this hangs as the 'Sword of Damocles', on the middle class and BPL families. People in the know have always wondered at the growing inequality despite the steady economic growth in the past few years. There is a well-orchestrated demand to introduce wealth tax as a measure to check the existing inequality from getting wider, while duly earmarking the revenue so generated for welfare schemes, education and healthcare. Laws should be so tightly framed and implemented that the rich, unwilling to dole out wealth tax, don't make a beeline to tax havens. Viksit Bharat 2027, anyone?

‘Virat Kohli said people think I'm a great Test cricketer…': Shubman Gill used same ‘captaincy line', reveals Karthik

Shubman Gill couldn't have asked for a better start to life as Indian captain, particularly with the bat in his hand. After a century in the first Test of his career as skipper in Leeds, Gill had the kind of match that comes to define legacies: 269 in the first innings, followed by 161 in the second at Edgbaston, a player-of-the-match performance to help India level the series in England. Shubman Gill waves to fans after receiving the player of the match medal.(AP) Gill's entire performance in Birmingham was so authoritative and in control that it reminded Dinesh Karthik of a former India captain and made him think Gill was going to step into those captaincy boots like a duck takes to water. Speaking on Sky Cricket's podcast, Karthik narrated how he saw flashes of Virat Kohli in how Gill carried himself. 'Athers, you spoke about Virat Kohli. I met him a few days ago, and this talk about captaincy came up,' said Karthik in response to Michael Atherton. 'He said people think 'I'm a great Test cricketer, I enjoyed my Test batting, which I did, but the fact is that getting my captaincy was the best thing to happen in my life.' Why I am saying this is that the same line was used by Shubman Gill.' 'World of cricket has to take notice…' Kohli is considered one of India's greatest Test captains, but what sets him apart is his ability to thrive despite that added pressure. If Gill's early captaincy stint at the age of 25 is any indication, he is set to go much the same way. Karthik argued that the international cricket fraternity must be ready for another Indian great in the making. 'He said 'I used to bat differently, but now that I've got captaincy, I almost think this is what my team requires, rather than me wanting to do something individually as a batter.' I said wow, this is something for which the world of cricket has to take notice,' said Karthik, who was not only a long-time teammate of Kohli's but also led Kolkata Knight Riders when Shubman Gill was breaking through in the IPL. 'Here is a man who has the appetite, he's got the skill, he's got the technique, but now he's got the mindset as well. I'm the captain, I'm going to lead from the front, lead off the front foot,' said Karthik of India's future at the helm of the Test team. The job's not done despite an extremely impressive first Test win for Gill – dominating and winning by 336 runs at Edgbaston. Attention now turns to the Lord's Test, where the batter will want to continue adding to its famous history books.
