UAE, US strengthen defence partnership

TAG 91.119-05-2025

The UAE and the US have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to establish a comprehensive defence partnership.
This represents a shared commitment to develop a structured roadmap for enhanced cooperation, joint capability development, and long-term defence alignment.
The two sides will explore a phased framework for advancing bilateral force readiness, interoperability and innovation-driven collaboration.
Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of State for Defence Affairs and Pete Hegseth, United States Secretary of Defence, signed the LOI in a formal ceremony at the UAE Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abu Dhabi recently.
As part of this partnership, the two sides also announced a strategic initiative between the US Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and the UAE's Tawazun Council to facilitate joint research and development, and expand industrial and investment partnerships.
Additionally, the UAE was formally welcomed into the US National Guard State Partnership Programme (SPP) through a partnership with the Texas National Guard.
This will bolster military modernisation efforts and enhance cooperation in integrated air and missile defence, cybersecurity, disaster response and operational planning.

Dave Chappelle roasts Trump, Israel-Iran conflict and DJ Khaled's silence: 'This isn't how it works, champ'

Dave Chappelle roasted Donald Trump's handling of the Israel-Iran conflict during his show in Abu Dhabi on Friday night. Travelling to the Gulf days after a ceasefire went into effect, the American comedian made light of the US President's unpredictability during his performance at a sold-out Etihad Arena as part of Abu Dhabi Comedy Season. 'Trump – I don't know about this guy. I can't tell if he's going to do good or not,' Chapelle said, adding: 'What a week you guys must have had over here in the Middle East.' The 51-year-old entertainer also brought up the US President's Saturday Truth Social post announcing the air strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities. 'Trump wrote that 'we did a meticulously perfect attack. We have disabled their nuclear facility.' And then at the end of the post he said, 'and now is the time for peace!' Word? I don't think that's how this works, champ,' Chappelle said. The comedian also made reference to the March security scandal surrounding US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who shared attack plans on the Houthis through his Signal account. 'Trump bombed Iran, in an attack that was carefully planned on WhatsApp,' Chapelle said. Chappelle made light of growing concerns in the US regarding the ongoing regional conflict, saying: 'Everybody in America is scared. It's not good when Bible places are in the news. That means it might be the end of times. And if it is, you know what? I had a good run.' When an audience member yelled out the name of Palestinian-American musician DJ Khaled, the comedian questioned why the DJ has remained silent on the ongoing war in Gaza. 'DJ Khaled, let me tell you something. For a Palestinian, this man is awfully quiet right now. And as a Palestinian, how could you be that quiet right now? And why are you so fat? People are starving. He's the only fat Palestinian on earth right now,' Chappelle joked. Chappelle has been outspoken about the suffering of Palestinians ever since the Israel-Gaza war began. Last year, during his show in Abu Dhabi, he described Israel's actions in Gaza as ' genocide ' to cheers from the audience. He's tempered his criticism of Trump since his re-election, urging the American leader to have empathy for the people of Palestine during his January appearance on Saturday Night Live. And while he did not comment directly on Palestine in his latest UAE performance, he did end by making his stance on the matter clear. 'Now that I'm a big powerful voice in America, I've learnt that I have to be careful. I can get in some kind of trouble and they'll try to extort me and put words in my mouth so that I come out here and lie to you,' Chappelle said. 'So if that ever happens, we need a phrase. It has to be something that I would never say. So that if I say it, you know not to listen to anything I say after that. You ready? The phrase is: I stand with Israel.' Abu Dhabi Comedy Season 2025 is set to conclude next month with US comedian Bill Burr's performance on July 12.

Pentagon details US strike on Iran nuclear site as Pete Hegseth attacks the press

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday said US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites had been "a resounding success', angrily pushing back against the 'fake news' media for questioning how effective the attacks were. President Donald Trump and his administration are furious after a preliminary assessment suggested the attacks may not have fully destroyed Iran's nuclear facilities. The report was leaked to the press. 'President Trump directed the most complex and secretive military operation in history," Mr Hegseth told the press at the Pentagon. "And it was a resounding success, resulting in a ceasefire agreement and the end of the 12-day war." Gen Dan Caine, US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the press conference that experts had spent 15 years developing the technology to attack Fordow and other Iranian nuclear bases. He said the GBU-57, the 13.6-tonne munition dropped from B-2 stealth bombers on Saturday, was designed to burrow into the Fordow site and explode when deep underground. Experts 'accomplished hundreds of test shots and dropped many full-scale weapons against extremely realistic targets for a single purpose – kill this target at the time and place of our nation's choosing', Gen Caine said. The bombs do not leave a large crater as they explode far below the surface, he said, noting the weapons had flown down three ventilation shafts and all exploded as planned. Mr Hegseth lambasted the Pentagon press corps for reporting on the initial assessment that suggested the US strikes on Fordow might not have fully "obliterated" Fordow. 'It's like in your DNA and in your blood to cheer against Trump,' he said. 'It's almost personal when we see the way in which leaks are used to try to disparage the outcome or muddy the waters about the impact of what happened.' He said that during the early stages of the bomb's development, the military had so many experts working on the programme doing modelling and simulation "that we were quietly and in a secret way, the biggest users of supercomputer hours within the United States of America". The pilots of the bombers involved in the weekend strikes described the flash after the bomb drop as 'the brightest explosion they had ever seen', Gen Caine said. A convoy of lorries photographed outside Fordow ahead of the strikes has led to speculation some of the enriched uranium was moved to another site before it could be destroyed. Asked whether this was the case, Mr Hegseth acknowledged that the Pentagon was "looking at all aspects of intelligence and making sure we have a sense of what was where. "I'm not aware of any intelligence that says things were not where they were supposed to be,' or that they were moved, Mr Hegseth said. President Trump later said on Truth Social that the vehicles "at the site were those of concrete workers trying to cover up the top of the shafts". "Nothing was taken out of facility. Would take too long, too dangerous, and very heavy and hard to move!" he wrote. Gen Caine also described how US troops at Al Udeid Airbase had defended against an Iranian missile attack on Monday. He said about 44 American service members responsible for defending the entire base were present as rounds of Patriot missiles were launched. Gen Caine said Qatar joined in the successful defence of what he called the largest single Patriot engagement in US military history.

He said experts had spent 15 years developing the technology to attack Fordow and other Iranian nuclear sites. He told reporters the GBU-57, the 30,000-pound (13.6-tonne) munition dropped from B-2 stealth bombers on Saturday, had been designed to burrow into the Fordow site and explode once deep underground. Experts 'accomplished hundreds of test shots and dropped many full-scale weapons against extremely realistic targets for a single purpose, kill this target at the time and place of our nation's choosing,' he said.
