Revamp of once-iconic Subiaco Oval wins architecture prize

The redevelopment of the once-iconic Subiaco Oval has earned architectural honours as one of WA's best landscape designs of the year.
Subi East Oval claimed three wins at last Friday's WA Landscape Architecture Awards.
Delivered as part of the wider Subi East project from DevelopmentWA, the oval's design was recognised for its reimagining of the historic space across cultural heritage, open space and civic elements.

That translated to an award of excellence in the cultural heritage category in addition to two landscape architecture awards — one for parks and open space and the other for civic landscape.
The project involved transforming the one-time home of WA football into a collection of open spaces that still includes an oval, as well as a modern playground, parkour course and a Noongar Six Seasons Bidi trail woven throughout the site. It was designed by UDLA and OCULUS.
'This complex, high-profile project meets significant technical and community expectations with clarity and sensitivity,' judges said.
'Leadership in Indigenous engagement is central to its success, shifting from consultation to co-decision-making with traditional owners.'
Subi East is regarded as one of the most significant urban infill projects in WA's built environment history, having given a new life to the oval that served as a sporting hub for over a century.
It also includes restored heritage gates, repurposed elements from the original stadium, and an open-air museum honouring the oval's legacy as the historic heart of WA football.

Oman: Two Speeding Cars Crash On Salalah Road, Killing Emirati And Omani

Two men—an Emirati and an Omani—lost their lives in a fatal head-on collision on a two-way highway near Thumrait in Oman's Dhofar Governorate on Saturday. Preliminary reports and widely shared video footage indicate that both vehicles were travelling at high speeds when they crashed. Surveillance cameras recorded the violent impact on a stretch of road commonly used by travellers heading to Salalah. The Omani victim, identified as mathematics teacher Nasser Al Kindi, was travelling with his family; his family members survived the incident. The Emirati victim was accompanied by another Emirati citizen, who also survived the crash. 1 (@Dxbai) August 2, 2025 Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the accident. Three Arrested For Stealing AC Units From Women's Sports Hall In Oman

The Royal Oman Police announced that three men have been taken into custody in connection with the theft of air-conditioning units from a women's sports hall in Sohar, in Oman's North Al Batinah Governorate. In a statement issued on Sunday, the police said that two of the suspects are Omani citizens and the third is an Arab expatriate. The investigation revealed that the stolen units had been sold to a local shop that deals in the trade and collection of scrap materials. Authorities did not specify how many units were stolen or the value of the goods but noted that legal procedures are under way and that the case will be referred to prosecutors once the initial inquiries are complete. The theft has drawn attention in the local community of Sohar Wilayat, a city known for its growing sports and recreational facilities, where such incidents are rare.
