DOTr looking to pilot automated fare collection in MRT 3 by July
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is looking to pilot the automated fare collection carousels at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) next month in a bid to offer more payment methods, Transportation Secretary Vivencio 'Vince' Dizon said Monday.
According to Dizon, the AFCs will allow customers of the MRT to pay by tapping their debit and credit cards at the counters of the MRT3.
'By July, we're going to be launching the first automated fare collection carousels. This is initial,' Dizon said at the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) Infrastructure Forum in Makati City.
'I know you're all excited about AFCs. So am I, but this is just a pilot which we're going to be doing on MRT3, but this will be your modern carousels,' he added, noting that the rollout is expected by the third week of the month.
Cashless payments, particularly GCash, was enabled as an option at the MRT3 — which runs along EDSA from North Avenue to Taft Avenue — in May. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Dedicated student lanes placed in MRT-3, LRT-2
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday announced the placement of dedicated student lanes at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2). DOTR said that the student lanes, placed in each station of the train system, will allow the seamless movement of students availing 50% fare discounts. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the government must ensure efficient movement of passengers at transport hubs by establishing effective platform management, especially for students who want to avail fare discounts. 'Kabilin-bilinan ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos na paginhawain natin ang buhay ng mga komyuter. Dapat hindi rin natin pahirapan ang pag-verify ng student discounts para walang pila at mabilis ang daloy ng mga student passengers para hindi sila ma-late sa kanilang eskwelahan,' said Dizon. (President Bongbong Marcos has instructed us to make the lives of commuters easier. We should also make it easier to verify student discounts so that there are no queues and the flow of student passengers is fast so that they are not late for their school.) The DOTr's announcement also came after Senator Raffy Tulfo called for the establishment of dedicated booths or lanes for students who will avail of their 50% fare discount at LRT and MRT stations. The DOTr increased the fare discount for all students, including those taking up postgraduate studies, from 20% to 50% for LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 last month. To get the discounted rates, students are required to present their valid ID within the current school year. Their tickets must be purchased at the ticket counter to avail of the discounted rates. PH, US sign technical aid deal for Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas Railway
The Philippines has tapped the United States for technical assistance in constructing the proposed Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas (SCMB) Railway project. In a statement on Friday, the US Embassy in Manila said the American government, through the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), inked the Beneficiary Agreement for the initiative with the Philippine Department of Transportation (DOTr) in Arlington, Virginia on June 26, 2025. USTDA's technical assistance for the SCMB Railway would involve transport model development, port-rail integration study, and legal and institutional framework analysis, among other areas. The SCMB Railway is meant to link major ports in Luzon and decongest traffic at the Port of Manila. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the freight cargo railway also aims to decentralize Manila Port and provide the additional transport capacity needed at the Batangas Port and Subic Bay. "As a freight cargo railway, the SCMB Railway is seen to solve port traffic and congestion in Manila Port, while ensuring the timely movement of products to and from adjacent major transport hubs," Dizon added. Secretary Frederick Go, Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs, said the railway project would boost the government's plan of linking major economic hubs under the Luzon Economic Corridor. 'We are grateful for the support in advancing this crucial infrastructure project, which will drive economic growth by improving connectivity between major ports and industrial hubs along the Luzon Economic Corridor. Once operational, the SCMB Railway will attract investments, create new opportunities for businesses, and most importantly, generate quality jobs that will benefit millions of Filipinos,' Go said. Thomas Hardy, USTDA's Acting Director, for his part, said the project underscores the US-Philippine alliance's vital role in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region. AirAsia MOVE gets P6M fine for ‘excessive airfares'
Flights, accommodations, and rides booking platform AirAsia MOVE was slapped with a P6 million penalty after government officials flagged it over alleged 'excessive' one-way plane tickets. In a statement on Friday, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said it welcomed the Civil Aeronautics Board's (CAB) 'swift action' in penalizing AirAsia MOVE 'after it posted excessive and unreasonable airfares on its booking platform.' 'The P6-million penalty imposed on AirAsia MOVE sends a clear message: the government will not tolerate any form of abuse to Filipino passengers,' the DOTr said. 'The DOTr will continue to protect the rights of the commuting public and to hold accountable those who violate established consumer protection regulations,' DOTR added. Previously, AirAsia MOVE chief executive officer Nadia Omer said it does not manually set or manipulate airfares, as it clarified that it is an online travel agency that displays flight inventory and pricing as provided by its authorized upstream suppliers. 'The discrepancies in fare displays for certain routes, including domestic flights operated by Philippine Airlines, were caused by temporary data synchronization issues with flight pricing partners,' she said. Omer also said that they have taken 'immediate steps' and brought up the matter with the third-party pricing provider for resolution and have since enhanced safeguards to prevent a repeat of the situation.. 'MOVE has been working closely with relevant authorities and is fully compliant with all regulatory requirements applicable to Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) operating in the Philippines,' she said. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon earlier said he was seeking the filing of charges and closure of AirAsia MOVE, citing Leyte Representative Richard Gomez's report that the lawmaker and his wife bought two one-way tickets from Tacloban to Manila for P77,704 through the Malaysia-based booking platform. Dizon also said that airline firm AirAsia does not have anything to do with the platform. 'They're affiliated but I don't think AirAsia, in fairness to AirAsia Philippines, no, the airline… I don't think they have anything to do with this,' Dizon said. The controversial flight rates came to light amid the ongoing repair of the San Juanico Bridge, which disrupted movement in the Eastern Visayas causing passenger and cargo fares to spike. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
