
Shoulder season travel surges as Europeans seek quieter holidays
77 per cent of Europeans intend to take at least one trip between June and November this year, according to the ETC's latest report.
Among these, the overwhelming majority, at 91 per cent, plan to travel within the continent. The boom in low-cost, short-haul airlines, better connections and routes, as well as ongoing geopolitical uncertainty outside Europe, especially in the Middle East, have all contributed to this shift.
The Mediterranean continues to be the most popular region, with 13 per cent of European travellers choosing Spain.
10 per cent plan to visit Italy, with 8 per cent opting for France and 6 per cent going to Greece.
Only 8 per cent of European tourists revealed that they were thinking of travelling outside of the continent within these six months.
The research surveyed travellers across the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, France and Spain.
Shoulder seasons attract more Europeans
Along with shunning crowded tourist hubs, a rising number of Europeans also want to travel during shoulder seasons, which are the months between peak and off-peak travel, usually spring and autumn, such as September.
Although peak summer months such as July and August are still seeing strong demand, with each chosen by 25 per cent of travellers, September follows closely behind at 22 per cent.
This is mainly because this less busy time of year brings fewer tourists, milder weather, more flexibility with work schedules and cheaper prices for top destinations. In many places, shoulder seasons offer quiet luxury and cultural experiences for older travellers, while also having adventure activities to attract younger tourists.
Older Europeans want to travel the most
Europeans aged 55 and above accounted for the strongest travel demand in the coming months, with 82 per cent planning trips, closely followed by 79 per cent of Europeans aged 45-54. 78 per cent of those aged 35-44 also intended to travel between June and November this year.
On the other hand, only 66 per cent of younger travellers aged 18-24 were planning to travel, mainly because of time and financial constraints.
However, despite economic volatility, 62 per cent of Europeans still intended to keep spending the same on travel during these six months, with 22 per cent likely to spend even more. The majority of Europeans planned to shell out between €1,500 and €2,000 per person per trip in this period.
Accommodation expenses tend to take up the majority of travel budgets, at 32 per cent, with food and drink accounting for 24 per cent, although this differs based on age group. While travellers above 45 are more likely to spend on quality dining and comfort, under 35s look for shopping, activities, lifestyle upgrades and wellness experiences while travelling.
'Our latest data shows that, even amid shifting economic and social realities, Europeans are not willing to compromise on travel,' Miguel Sanz, president of ETC, said in a press release.
Travellers are more conscious about overtourism
With several well-known European destinations such as Santorini, Rome, Venice and Barcelona already struggling with overtourism, more European travellers are now making a conscious effort to find under-the-radar spots.
55 per cent of travellers are actively looking for niche places for their upcoming trips, an increase from 48 per cent in spring this year. 11 per cent of travellers also revealed that picking a less crowded spot was now their main priority.
Sanz noted: 'Destinations should take advantage of this trend by promoting less crowded, off-the-beaten-track experiences, particularly during shoulder months, and by enhancing their sustainable marketing efforts aimed at European travellers.'
Car travel saw a surge in popularity as well, with 32 per cent of travellers choosing it to better access remote destinations. However, air travel was still the most popular mode of transport, accounting for 53 per cent of travellers, primarily due to its value for money and speed.

Summer 2025 is set to be one of the hottest on record in Europe, and millions will once again head for the coast. The Mediterranean is one of the world's favourite destinations, attracting one third of global tourists. However, its ecosystems are under growing pressure from the same sector that fuels its economy. In 2023 alone, the EU recorded 1.1 billion tourist nights, with Italy and Spain leading the way. It is easy to see why. European coasts offer more than just sea breeze. According to the European Union's 2024 bathing water assessment, more than 85% of Europe's bathing waters were rated 'excellent', with Cyprus, Bulgaria, and Greece topping the charts. But while the activities that draw people to the coast depend on clean and intact environments, tourists often leave places more polluted than they found them. A 2024 study published in the international journal Nature says that tourism's carbon emissions have grown at twice the rate of the global economy, and now account for 8.8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Coastal tourists leave a trace of pollution behind 'In some hotspots, around 75% of annual waste is generated during the summer season', says Chloé Martin, Sustainable Tourism Programme Manager at Plan Bleu, the French activity centre of the Mediterranean Action Plan of the United Nations Environment Programme. From the skies to the seafloor, every tourist leaves a mark on the environment. Martin points out that air travel, accommodation, and plastic waste are the main ecological concerns associated with coastal tourism. As tourism adapts to climate change, how can travellers make more sustainable choices? Climate change is projected to have a profound impact on beach tourism and challenge the industry's resilience, according to the EU Blue Economy Report 2025. Rising seas, hotter summers, and more frequent extreme weather events are reshaping the physical environment, ecosystems, and amenities that underpin coastal tourism. This can damage the reputation of many destinations, which is why sustainability and adaptability to climate change are now crucial for many seaside travel companies today. But as the promotion of ecolabels and sustainability certifications increases, how can travellers tell what is truly green and what is simply greenwashing? According to the European Commission, 53% of green claims in the EU are vague or misleading. 'They are used so much that people stop believing them,' warns Patricia Puig, a specialist in marine conservation and founder of Oceanogami, a Spanish consultancy company focused on ocean responsibility. Martin recommends that travellers check whether the issuing body is a private company or an independent public body, and whether the requirements are clear and publicly available, based on international standards that undergo regular verification. What to look out for on whale or dolphin watching tours? When booking a wildlife-watching tour, it is key to research beforehand. 'If you look at the promotional pictures of the company and you see a tourist touching an animal, that's not responsible', warns Puig. When anchoring a boat, a responsible company would prefer to stabilise the vessel by attaching it to a buoy where possible, rather than always anchoring in the sand, explains Puig, to prevent damaging the seabed. It is also advisable to keep a distance from the animals. How to snorkel and dive responsibly? 'We are guests in the marine environment', says Puig, reminding travellers that touching marine animals or plants can spread diseases and disrupt ecosystems. Even seemingly harmless actions, like removing pieces of coral as souvenirs, can cause lasting damage and should never be encouraged, especially by companies claiming to be sustainable. To enjoy these activities consciously, Puig recommends choosing certified operators that work with marine biologists and offer tours to small groups, thereby reducing environmental pressure. She also suggests using reef-safe sunscreen. And jet skiing? Jet skis disturb wildlife with noise and emissions. Some countries, such as Greece and Italy, are already limiting or banning the use of motorised watercraft in coastal areas to protect both wildlife and coastal communities. Scandi ever after: Why are couples flocking to Denmark to get married?
Shotgun weddings don't have to rhyme with Las Vegas anymore, as Denmark has become the European (and global) hotspot for fast weddings. Couples from all over the world are flocking to Copenhagen to get married, as the lack of red tape compared to other countries has led some to brand the capital as the "Las Vegas of Europe." Anita Okkels Birk Thomsen, who heads the marriage department at Copenhagen City Hall, reveals that approximately 8,000 wedding ceremonies took place there last year – with more than 5,000 involving couples who weren't Danish residents. "That's almost double what we saw five years ago," she notes. "They come from all over the world." So, what gives? Unlike other European nations, Denmark does not demand birth certificates or evidence of single status in order to obtain documentation permitting marriage. And that marriage can take place within a four-month period. Denmark's Family Law Agency (Familieretshuset) processes applications for a fee of 2,100 kroner (€282) and delivers a marriage certificate within five working days, provided couples meet the criteria, ie: those not residing in Denmark can simply show a passport or a tourist visa. Authorities may occasionally request civil status certificates when divorce documentation fails to clearly demonstrate finalised proceedings. Other than that, and especially compared to other countries, it's a very snappy affair. Bureaucracy overload For the sake of comparison, let's look at France. In the land of passion and romance, you need to fill in a 'marriage file' and 'build your marriage record', according to the service public website. You need to provide the original and a photocopy of documents like your identity card, passport or driving license, as well as proof of domicile or residence dated more than one month. And that's just if both partners are French. If you or your future partner are a foreigner, the City Hall 'may ask you to provide documents specific to your nationality', like a 'certificate of custom' and a 'certificate of celibacy'. If you happen to be divorced, you'll be asked for a final divorce decision or a family booklet 'corresponding to the former union with mention of divorce.' (That family record book is delivered to the newlyweds on the day of the wedding.) When all of that's sorted, witnesses also need to provide some information of their own, including date and place of birth, occupation and their very own ID. Provided you've filled all of that out thoroughly and completed your marriage file, you have to submit the file to the municipality of the chosen location for the ceremony. The file will be reviewed and the registrar tends to audition the couple. The date is then fixed, in agreement with the town hall – knowing that the marriage cannot be celebrated until the tenth day following the publication of the wedding reports. Finally, on the day, the celebration must be done by the mayor or a deputy. Swooning yet? France may have a reputation for passion, but anyone who has ever lived there can attest to the Gallic fervour for paperwork. Don't get us started about Germany. A foreigner's tale Back to Denmark, where tying the knot doesn't require as much patience. The standard procedure can be wrapped up in just five working days – which is enough to validate the paperwork and book a slot. "I had heard that the paperwork was very easy, and it was," shares an American citizen who lives in the EU and is heading to Aarhus in Denmark next month for a small and private ceremony. "20 minutes to fill in the online form and within four days, I got a response." "I have some friends in Aarhus, but it's true that the process was incredibly easy," she adds. "Naturally, you have to submit some proof that it's a real relationship and not some Visa scam, but it was such a smooth affair. And you don't need to submit proof of divorce, for example." "I was then told what the nearest date would be for the ceremony, and that was within a space of two months. Easy." As much as we wish her and her partner a long and happy life together, there are those who aren't best pleased about the amount of foreign couples heading to Denmark for their special day... Danish defence The locals aren't too thrilled about the influx of soon-to-be newlyweds, as demand for ceremonies at Copenhagen City Hall now vastly outstrips the number of available appointments. Mia Nyegaard, the Copenhagen official overseeing culture and leisure, told AP that the "significant rise" in foreign couples tying the knot in the capital "poses challenges for Copenhagen-based couples wishing to get married." This has led local officials to plan intervention measures. Nyegaard stated that roughly 40 per cent of wedding appointments at City Hall will be set aside for Copenhagen residents from late October onwards. Furthermore, Copenhagen councillors will examine additional measures after the summer break to ease the overall strain on the city's wedding capacity. Terms and conditions apply It is also worth noting that while a Denmark wedding may be appealing, especially for same-sex couples as the Scandinavian country is one of Europe's most inclusive in terms of LGBTQ rights and was the first country in the world to recognize same-sex civil unions in 1989, watch out for hidden paperwork and possible snags once you get home... While a Danish marriage may seem straightforward on paper, EU member states are not obligated to validate marriages performed in other countries. Recognition depends on each nation's laws. Thankfully, by in large, marriages performed abroad are valid in that country if they follow local laws. To swing back to France, it's a mercifully easier affair in this regard. The principle of lex loci celebrationis (law of the place of the ceremony) applies, meaning that if the marriage is valid under local law, it is considered valid in France. Phew. Sorry – ouf.

US tourists shift to Europe's local favourites for summer 2025
A shift in traveller preferences is pushing American vacationers to explore Europe like locals, as they increasingly choose destinations that Europeans love rather than popular places among American tourists. Popular travel platform HomeToGo, which offers more than 20 million vacation suggestions worldwide, has identified the top international destinations gaining popularity among US travellers in 2025 based on online searches. Spain and Greece lead the rankings, though American tourists are increasingly favouring lesser-known spots over iconic destinations like Ibiza, Santorini, or Mykonos. This year, Americans are increasingly keen to explore Europe like locals, with rising interest in destinations traditionally favoured by Europeans. Mallorca in Spain and Menorca in Spain ( up 333 per cent year-over-year) - now ranked as the fourth most-searched and trending summer destinations respectively - have long been favourites among Europeans, but are often overshadowed in the US by their famous neighbour, Ibiza. Similarly, Lake Garda, Italy, ranked ninth, is now emerging as an alternative to the ever-popular Lake Como. Lesser-known Greek islands are rising in popularity among travellers. Naxos (up 327 per cent year-on-year), Lefkada (189 per cent), and Zakynthos (175 per cent) are fast becoming must-visit destinations for those seeking the charm of the Greek islands without the crowds typically found in Santorini or Mykonos. Meanwhile, interest in Brittany, France, is also growing (up 272 per cent year-on-year) as more American travellers are drawn to its rugged coastline and authentic appeal, offering an alternative to the glitz of the French Riviera. Using AI to choose a travel destination Holidaymakers in the US are also increasingly adopting AI tools to simplify and improve their summer travel planning and booking experiences. In HomeToGo's 2025 Travel Survey, more than half of US respondents (53 per cent) said they will definitely (29.6 per cent) or likely (23.4 per cent) use AI for travel planning in 2025.
