Man admits a £26,000-plus benefit fraud after failing to inform DWP of change

A NORTH Cumbria man has admitted a £26,000-plus benefit fraud which occurred during a period of more than two-and-a-half years.
Carlisle Magistrates' Court heard 49-year-old Ian Andrew Waugh was also subject to a crown court-imposed suspended prison sentence when he committed a fraud offence between December 6, 2021, and July 4 last year.
During a short hearing this morning (Monday) in front of a deputy district judge, Waugh pleaded guilty to one charge: dishonestly failing to notify a charge of circumstances which affected entitlement to social security benefit.
Court papers show he did so by dishonestly failing to promptly notify the Department for Work and Pensions that his children were no longer residing with him.
This is said to have resulted in an overpayment of universal credit totalling £26,278.62.
In May 2022, Waugh appeared at Carlisle Crown Court where a judge suspended an 18-month jail term. The court heard a bitter Facebook fallout ended violently as Waugh subjected his victim to an attack with a crow bar which left him with a fractured skull and a head wound which was stapled.
Committing the offence of benefit fraud put Waugh in breach of that suspended sentence.
Deputy district judge Roger Lowe adjourned the case and requested that a probation service pre-sentence report be prepared before Waugh receives his punishment.
Waugh, of Millriggs, Great Corby, is due to be sentenced by a judge at Carlisle Crown Court on August 26.
In the meantime he has been granted unconditional bail.

Heartbreaking video shows family's tearful send-off of teen whose organs were donated after being hit by alleged drunk illegal immigrant

A heartbreaking video shows the final moments of a Wisconsin teen's life that was allegedly taken by an illegal immigrant drunk driver as his family gave their final goodbye before his organs were donated. Tearful family and friends surrounded the lifeless body of 19-year-old Brady Heiling as doctors wheeled him on a stretcher through a hospital hallway, according to a video posted by his mother, Jen Heiling. Draped across the front of the gurney was a sign that read 'DONATE LIFE,' a nod to his organ donation. 'Brady Allen Heiling you are soooooo LOVED!…' his mother wrote in the emotional post. Loved ones bid the teen, who was hooked up to a breathing machine, farewell as they leaned onto his chest and cried out. 4 Brady Heiling's family says goodbye to the beloved teen. Jen Heiling/Facebook Heiling, along with his 'love' Hallie Helgeson, 18, tragically died after an illegal immigrant drunk driver hit them while driving the wrong way on an interstate outside Madison, officials said. Honduran national Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila, 30, was drunk and driving her SUV the wrong direction on a highway outside Madison when she allegedly struck a vehicle and killed the two teens on July 20, according to police. Helgeson, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died at the scene, while Heiling, who was behind the wheel, clung to life for five days after he was airlifted from the wreck. He fought through multiple unsuccessful surgeries before succumbing to his injuries. 'Hallie Helgeson and Brady Heiling had their whole lives ahead of them—and they would still be alive today if it weren't for Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila—a criminal illegal alien from Honduras,' DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. 4 Honduran national Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila, 30, was allegedly drunk when she drove her SUV the wrong way on a Madison highway and struck and killed Brady Heiling, 19, and Hallie Helgeson, 18. Dane County Sheriff's Office 'We are weak, weary and heart broken and need to rest,' Jen Heiling posted online following her son's tragic death. She said she hopes her son's harvested organs can save more lives, according to the West Central Tribune. The devastating crash wasn't Martinez-Avila's first time getting in trouble behind the wheel. She already had a drunk driving conviction from November 2020 and has had several other traffic violations since then for driving without a license, speeding, following too closely and inattentive driving, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. 4 Brady Heiling with his mother, father and two sisters. Jen Heiling/Facebook Martinez-Avila's rap sheet required her to have a special device in her car that blocks it from starting if she has alcohol in her system, according to the local news outlet. However, she did not have it installed during the fatal collision. DHS railed against the sanctuary policies in Dane County, where Madison is located. 'Unfortunately, this sanctuary jurisdiction has a history of not honoring ICE arrest detainers often leading to the release of murderers and other heinous criminals,' McLaughlin said. Martinez-Avila has been charged with two counts of felony vehicular homicide and impaired driving. ICE has since lodged a detainer to take the alleged killer into federal custody and pursue her deportation.

Former Marine Derrick Perry hailed as hero after stopping stabbing rampage at Michigan Walmart

Viral video captures the moment Perry confronts the suspect, drawing praise from Traverse City residents and social media users alike. A local former Marine is being hailed as a hero by the community for stepping in during the horrific stabbing at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, where 11 people were injured inside the store in what is being called a 'terror rampage' by local authorities. Derrick Perry, 41, who was at the Walmart with family when the stabbing occurred, pulled out his concealed firearm and held the suspect—42-year-old Bradford James Gille—at bay outside of the store until the Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies arrived. Perry is being credited with potentially saving the lives of additional victims with his quick and decisive actions. Viral cellphone footage of the incident outside shows Perry approaching Gille as he and others yell at him to throw down his knife. Traverse City Police Chief Lauren Gilbert said that Perry's quick and decisive actions may have saved lives. 'Had he not stepped in when he did, the situation could've turned much worse. He likely saved lives,' she said. At 4:43 p.m. on Saturday, local authorities began receiving phone calls of a stabbing at the Walmart. In total, 11 people were stabbed ranging in ages from 29 to 84. Seven people are in fair condition and four are in serious condition, according to NBC News. Local authorities intend to pursue a terrorism charge in addition to 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. Many people praised Perry's actions with many calling him a hero; some commenters on social media have even called for him to receive a Presidential Medal of Honor. Many cited his Marine Corps training as being vital to his willingness to step into the situation. On a Traverse City Facebook group, a woman claiming to be Perry's daughter-in-law posted that he was a hero: 'So happy to be this man's daughter in law! True hero! So proud of him for protecting so many today.' His daughter said, 'Proud daughter moment.' Most people were glad that he was getting the recognition for being the man who stepped into a dangerous situation. One commenter who seemed to know the Perry family summed up the vast majority of the response to Perry's heroic actions, saying on Facebook, 'Thank you for being selfless! You are a true hero and this town is blessed for people like you. This is what makes our town a true community! We have the best people and we will never let something like this define us!' Dog tracks missing woman's scent for miles and finds her in marsh, CT troopers say

A bloodhound tracked a missing woman's scent for miles and found her in a swampy area of a reservoir, Connecticut officials said. On July 22, bloodhounds were requested to a Glastonbury home after troopers got reports of a missing woman with Alzheimer's, according to a July 25 Facebook post by state police. A K-9 dog started at the woman's home and followed her scent for 2.7 miles, troopers said. She was eventually found in a marsh with a leg injury and unable to walk, troopers said. Troopers were able to transport the woman from the woods, and she was sent to a local hospital for treatment, the state police said. Glastonbury is about a 10-mile drive southeast from Hartford.
