Fukushima radioactive debris removal delayed until 2037

Malay Mail2 days ago
TOKYO, July 29 — A massive operation to remove hundreds of tonnes of radioactive debris from Japan's tsunami-stricken Fukushima nuclear plant has been delayed until at least 2037, the operator said today.
Around 880 tonnes of hazardous material remain inside the power station, site of one of history's worst nuclear accidents after a tsunami triggered by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake in 2011.
Preparation work needed to start the retrieval is expected to take '12 to 15' years from now, Tepco official Akira Ono told reporters.
This means the earliest they can embark on the removal is now 2037, according to a Tepco document, after the company previously said they hoped to start in the early 2030s.
Dangerously high radiation levels mean that removing melted fuel and other debris from the plant is seen as the most daunting challenge in the decades-long decommissioning project.
Tiny samples of material have twice been collected under a trial project using special tools, but full-fledged extractions are yet to take place.
The new schedule throws into doubt previously stated goals by Tepco and the government to declare the Fukushima plant defunct by 2051.
But Tepco insisted today the deadline was achievable despite acknowledging it would be 'tough'.
'There is no need to abandon the target,' Ono said, adding it is the firm's 'responsibility' to 'figure out how to meet it'.

IATA Records 2.6 Pct Growth In Global Passenger Demand In June 2025

IATA Records 2.6 Pct Growth In Global Passenger Demand In June 2025 KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recorded a 2.6 per cent increase in total global passenger demand for June 2025. Its director general Willie Walsh said in a statement today that it was a slower pace than what the company had seen in previous months and reflected disruptions around military conflict in the Middle East. 'With demand growth lagging the 3.4 per cent capacity expansion, load factors dipped 0.6 percentage points from their all-time record-high levels. 'At 84.5 per cent globally, however, load factors are still very strong. And with a modest 1.8 per cent capacity growth visible in August schedules, load factors over the northern summer are unlikely to stray far from their recent historic highs,' he said. On a regional breakdown of the international passenger markets, the aviation body said Asia-Pacific airlines achieved a 7.2 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) increase in demand, with capacity rising by 7.5 per cent while the load factor stood at 82.9 per cent, slightly lower by 0.2 percentage points compared to June 2024. It noted that European carriers posted a 2.8 per cent y-o-y growth in demand, while capacity rose 3.3 per cent and load factor came in at 87.4 per cent. 'North American saw a decline of 0.3 per cent in demand, 2.2 per cent increase in capacity and load factor was 86.9 per cent. 'Meanwhile, Middle Eastern carriers recorded a 0.4 per cent fall in demand. Its capacity increased 1.1 per cent y-o-y while the load factor was 78.7 per cent,' it said. -- BERNAMA

Govt to boost creative economy, prioritise animation sector

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said MyCreative Ventures would manage funding while Finas would oversee certification and licensing. KUALA LUMPUR : The government is focusing on strengthening the creative economy to boost Malaysia's competitiveness and produce high-value content for both the local and international markets. Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said the aim is to develop commercially viable works that can be exported, while also nurturing talent and expanding the creative industry's value chain. 'We hope these efforts will increase our competitiveness through the production of works with high commercial value for local and international enjoyment, including the exports of IPs,' he said at a press conference after the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today. Fahmi said his ministry would direct MyCreative Ventures to manage funding while Finas would oversee certification and licensing – particularly in line with the government's focus on animation. He said this follows Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's instruction to prioritise the animation sector. Fahmi also announced a nationwide online briefing tonight to grassroots leaders to explain the government's initiatives under the 13MP. 'When we support grassroots efforts in spreading government aspirations, the people benefit in the long run,' he said. Earlier today, Anwar tabled the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat, which included major reforms to the education and economic systems, and policies for an ageing population.

Ringgit retreats versus US dollar, analysts eye growth support from 13MP

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The ringgit reversed its gains in the morning to end lower against the greenback on Thursday as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) kept its benchmark interest rate steady overnight. The Fed funds rate was kept unchanged at 4.25-4.50 per cent. At 6 pm, the local note fell to 4.2650/2730 versus the US dollar from yesterday's close of 4.2410/2455. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the Fed's decision to hold its key interest rate unchanged signalled that the current monetary policy stance is appropriate. 'This implies that the Fed is keen to keep the policy unchanged as concerns over tariff-induced inflation warrant a restrictive monetary policy stance,' he told Bernama. Back home, he noted that the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament today saw the development expenditure (DE) allocation raised to RM430 billion from RM400 billion for the next five-year period from 2026 and 2030. 'This will help promote domestic demand as this will encourage investment activities, which then will help lift Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Ultimately, this will be ringgit-positive in the mid to long term,' he said. The 13MP, which aims to drive sustainable growth based on value creation across all sectors, involves RM611 billion in investments to ensure the success of the five-year plan, with RM430 billion being the government's development allocation. The funding from government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs) would amount to RM120 billion to support economic growth through domestic direct investment in strategic sectors, and via the public-private partnership (PPP) method, support from the private sector stands at RM61 billion. Of the RM430 billion allocation, he said more than half, or RM227 billion, will be channelled to the economic sector as the main pillar of the country's growth. At the close, the ringgit ended higher against major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8443/8498 from 2.8646/8678 at the close on Wednesday, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.6426/6532 from 5.6745/6805, and gained against the euro to 4.8766/8857 from 4.8996/9048 previously. The ringgit was also mostly higher against regional peers. It improved against the Philippine peso to 7.31/7.33 from 7.36/7.38, edged higher versus the Thai baht to 13.0448/0753 from 13.0528/0719, and strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.2889/2953 from 3.2919/2957. However, it fell against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.1/259.7 from yesterday's 258.5/258.9. — Bernama
