KUALA LUMPUR: After 16 years, Manchester United are finally making their way back to Malaysian shores, and this time, it's all about the fans.
The former Premier League champions will take on an Asean XI at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on May 28 - their first-ever post-season tour.
Organisers say the match is a tribute to the support the Red Devils continue to receive from Southeast Asian fans, especially in Malaysia.
"This is more than just a football match, it's about reconnecting with a fanbase that's stood by the club through thick and thin," said Julian Kam, chief executive officer of ProEvents International, who are the organisers.
Man United last played in Malaysia in 2009 under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, with the team attracting sell-out crowds.
Their bond with local fans stretches back more than four decades, with their first visit coming in 1981.
"There's a phenomenal legacy here," said Julian.
"We first brought Manchester United here in 1995, nearly 30 years ago, when we arranged a match against Selangor. Malaysia has always had a special connection with the club."
Julian revealed that bringing United back had been a long process behind the scenes.
"As with the international football calendar, there are many matches during the pre-season, so scheduling a trip to Malaysia wasn't easy," he said.
"We've been working on this project for at least two years to sort out the timing and logistics."
"You have the Club World Championship, the World Cup next year, it's always a challenge.
"That's why we originally planned this tour for the post-season rather than the pre-season.
"After discussions with the club and reviewing the calendar, we agreed that a post-season trip would be best."
This change in approach marks a shift from tradition, with United historically travelling to Asia ahead of the season.
"This is the first time the club are doing a post-season tour, and they are really making the effort to come back," Julian added
With the Red Devils going through one of their toughest seasons in recent memory — languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table — the club are hoping the love from Asean fans will lift morale.
Julian believes the timing works to United's advantage.
"The mentality will be more relaxed than in the usual pre-season, where players are under pressure to perform and earn their place in the team," he said.
"Post-season is more laid-back, but it's still a good opportunity for the manager to observe how players respond to different environments."
"It's not easy for players who haven't been to Asia before. When they see the crowd and the passion of the fans, their reactions will be interesting. And this comes at a time when United are going through one of their most challenging periods performance-wise."
Unlike previous visits, which saw United face the national team or Malaysian Selection, this year's clash will feature an Asean Selection side led by Vietnam national team coach Kim Sang Sik.
Julian said the idea was to make the event a truly regional celebration.
"We want to connect with as many fans as possible in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia. By inviting an Asean All-Star team, we can engage with more supporters in the region."

The championship saw nine teams from six countries and territories - Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Myanmar, China and Taiwan - vie for the championship title in the final. Malaysia, through the maiden participation of the Petaling Jaya Catholic High School Alumni Association Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe, earned 9.59 points to be placed third and took home USD6,000 cash, a trophy and medals presented by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Michael Oh Head, one of the troupe's lion dancers, said that although there was some pressure representing Malaysia, the team gave their best performance. 'We will continue to train until we achieve better results and improved performances. We also hope to be given more opportunities to represent Malaysia and achieve success, thus bringing glory to the country,' he told Bernama after the prize-giving ceremony. Two other Malaysian teams - Kwong Ngai Lion Dance and Malaysia Xuan Long Dragon and Lion Dance Rawang Selangor - also made it to the final. The Kwong Ngai Lion Dance troupe finished seventh with 8.89 points, while the team from Rawang had to withdraw after one of its members sustained a leg injury. Malaysian Lion Dance Association advisor Siow Ho Phiew expressed his pride and satisfaction with the national teams' achievements, while describing the success of the three Malaysian teams reaching the final as a significant accomplishment that elevated the country's reputation on the international stage. 'Yes, I am satisfied with the performances of the Malaysian teams today. When it comes to major championships, we must work hard and compete in Genting to become world champions or succeed in other competitions,' he said. The Genting championship saw the Singapore B Team, represented by Yi Mei Athletic Association, crowned champion with 9.78 points while their counterparts, Singapore A, also represented by the same association, finished second with 9.66 points. The two teams took home USD18,000 and USD10,000 respectively, along with trophies and medals. Resorts World Genting Sales, Marketing and Public Relations executive vice-president Spencer Lee said this year's edition featured a significant difference with the creative use of props and storytelling elements, turning lion dance into not only a cultural performance but also a high-stamina sport. 'We hope that one day lion dance can become an international sports event, (and featured) in the SEA Games, Asian Games or the Olympics,' he said. The championship, organised by Resorts World Genting in collaboration with the Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Federation, saw 40 teams from around the world vying for glory since Friday (July 25). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? #NSTviral: KJ triumphs in boxing debut against ex-world Muay Thai champion

KUALA LUMPUR: Hot FM radio presenter Khairy Jamaluddin's dream of stepping into a boxing ring came true when he defeated former world number one Muay Thai fighter Saiful Merican in a friendly match yesterday. The bout, held at ST Rosyam Mart in Jalan Kebun, was part of Hot FM's Clash of Champion event and drew a crowd of over 300 spectators. Khairy, affectionately known as KJ, said he was grateful to have claimed a memorable win over the 37-year-old mixed martial arts (MMA) star. "Since I was a child, I've always been passionate about boxing and grew up watching Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Mike Tyson. "I've always wanted to step into a boxing ring, and I never imagined I would get the opportunity today. "To face off against a highly respected martial artist like Saiful 'The Vampire' Merican — it's truly an honour," he said. The friendly match had reportedly been in the works since last year, but only materialised on Sunday. Khairy, who has known Saiful for some time, described sharing the ring with the Malaysian MMA athlete as a meaningful experience. "He gave me some room in the first two minutes, but when he punched — he really punched," he added with a smile. Khairy also expressed appreciation to everyone who made the match possible, including his coach and his son, Jibriel Ali Jamaluddin, who served as his cornerman. Aside from the headline bout, the event also featured a match between Hot FM's Bekfes presenter AG and Adli Goldenboy, which ended in a draw. Another crowd favourite was a friendly arm-wrestling match between presenter Fara Fauzana and singer Elizabeth Tan, with Tan emerging victorious.
