Valke overpower Leopards with six tries to maintain unbeaten Currie Cup run
Barnard Stadium erupted with cheers and song as fans created an electric atmosphere when the Valke clashed with the Leopards on June 21 in the second round of the Currie Cup First Division.
The home side delivered a commanding performance from the first whistle, securing a resounding 50–24 victory.
The Valke dominated from the outset, fortifying their backline to thwart the Leopards' attempts at running tries, while creating ample scoring opportunities for their forwards. Despite their efforts, the Leopards' defence struggled to contain the relentless pressure.

Leopards coach Riaan van Straten acknowledged his team's shortcomings but took heart from their improved second-half performance.
'We're obviously disappointed. We wanted to do better. We didn't start well, but we finished strong and played much better rugby in the second half,' said Van Straten.
'It was a game of two halves. The Valke won the first half 38–7; we won the second 17–12. We'll need to replicate our second-half effort from the start next time. Discipline and ball retention are areas that need serious attention.'
The Valke ran in six tries in the first half, including one by Mosolwa Mafuma, putting the visitors under immense pressure. A brief lapse allowed the Leopards to capitalise and score their first try, but the Valke still led comfortably at the break.
Valke head coach JP Immelman was pleased with the result and especially proud of the team's attacking execution.

'You don't just put 50 points on any team in this competition,' said Immelman.
'I'm proud of how we attacked and of the overall performance. The only downside was conceding three tries. That's something we'll work on. Still, it's great when the work you put in during the week pays off.'
Immelman highlighted improvements in controlling possession and territory, as well as dominance at set pieces. These were areas the team had targeted after a previous clash with the Leopards in the SA Cup six weeks ago.
'In the second half, we gave them too much ball and struggled to transition quickly from attack to defence,' he added.
The Leopards returned with renewed energy after half-time, quickly scoring a try and showing urgency in closing the gap.
However, the Valke struck back with a try from Sergio Stalmeester, maintaining their lead despite conceding the second half 12–17.
Leopards captain Ignatius Prinsloo expressed disappointment in the result but remained hopeful.

'It's tough to lose, but sometimes an early-season defeat is a blessing in disguise. We showed what we're capable of in the second half. We're a young squad with limited experience, so setbacks like this are part of our learning curve,' said Prinsloo.
With this win, combined with their opening-round victory over the NovaVit Griffons on June 14, the Valke remain unbeaten and top the First Division standings with 10 points. They are the only team yet to lose in the competition.
Individual performances were also recognised. Pierre Rabie was named Forward of the Match, Waqar Solaan took Back of the Match honours, and Zingisa April received the Player of the Match award.
Valke captain Andrew Volschenk praised his side's effort and composure.
'We led 38–0 at one point, gave away a try before half-time, and started the second half slowly, but we regrouped and finished strong. Winning 50–24 against the Leopards is a big achievement,' he said.
'It's always a privilege to play them. I'm a fan of theirs. This competition gives us great exposure and we're loving every minute of it.'
The Valke now prepare for tough fixtures against the Border Bulldogs, Phangela SWD Eagles and Eastern Province Elephants. With two convincing wins under their belt, they have emerged as strong contenders in the First Division.

Currie Cup wrap: Big wins for Bulls, Lions and Boland
All teams are backing a number of young promising players with the seasoned campaigners resting after the URC season. Lions centre Rynhardt Jonker dives over the tryline for a try against the Sharks. Picture: Christiaan Kotze/Gallo Images The Lions might not have achieved their goals in the United Rugby Championship, but they have got off to a flying start in the Currie Cup competition, which got under way this weekend. Ivan van Rooyen's URC team failed to make the top eight for the fourth straight season, but Mziwakhe Nkosi's Currie Cup side, packed with young, promising players with a few seasoned men around them, opened up their 2025 Currie Cup challenge with a 46-5 demolition of the Sharks, who're also backing young up-and-comers in the competition. The Joburg-based side scored six tries to the one by the visitors to Ellis Park in what was a repeat of last season's final, which the Sharks won with the last kick of the match. 'We know where we stand now' Nkosi said he was pleased with the result considering his side hadn't played any warm-up matches. 'We were somewhat apprehensive after not playing a warm-up game, but as the game went on we found ourselves,' said Nkosi. 'We were still a bit rusty, but that's to be expected after not playing a warm-up. But the more we train and play in the coming weeks the better it will be, when it comes to making contact. You can only simulate so much in training. 'The decision-making will also get sharper. We've played a game now, and know where we stand, what we need to improve. 'Overall, it was a good start, I am happy with the level of performance, so I'll take it.' The Lions next face Western Province, also in Joburg, this coming weekend. Wins for the Bulls, Pumas and Boland The Bulls, losing URC finalists for a third time in four seasons just a few weeks ago, also got their Currie Cup campaign off to a rollicking start, winning 48-23 in Cape Town against Western Province. Again, both unions fielded younger, less experienced players, as they're likely to do throughout the competition, but they both produced some sparkling rugby at times. The Bulls scored eight tries, while flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain was excellent off the kicking tee. The Bulls next host the Sharks. In the competition opener on Friday, the Pumas were too good for Griquas, winning 49-28 in Mbombela. The Pumas will have aspirations of going all the way again, like they did in 2022. They're next away to the Cheetahs. The Boland Cavaliers, in their return to top-flight rugby, shocked the Cheetahs in a thrilling 10-try game in Wellington late Sunday. The home side scored their winning try eight minutes into 'over-time'. They are away to Griquas next. Results Pumas 49 Griquas 28 Lions 46 Sharks 5 WP 23 Bulls 48 Boland 37 Cheetahs 35

Currie Cup result: Boland stun Cheetahs in Wellington
Both teams scored five tries in a hugely entertaining game. The Boland Cavaliers got their 2025 Currie Cup campaign off to the perfect start when they stunned the Cheetahs 37-35 in their opening game in Wellington on Sunday afternoon. Hawies Fourie's team qualified for the top-eight Premier Division of the Currie Cup after performing well in the SA Cup competition some months ago. The newcomers to the Premier Division dominated the opening half of the match and led 27-14 at half-time. But the Cheetahs responded with an energised second half performance and looked to have sewn the match up deep into the half. But two late tries by the Bolanders, the final one well into over-time, secured a dramatic win for Fourie and his charges. Both teams scored five tries in a hugely entertaining game. The Cheetahs' coaching staff of Frans Steyn and Ruan Pienaar will not be happy after their side got back into the game in the second half, just to give it away at the end. The Cheetahs are next up against the Pumas at home on Friday, while Boland take on Griquas in Kimberley next Sunday. In the other matches this weekend, the Pumas beat Griquas 49-28 in Mbombela, the Lions beat the Sharks 46-5 in Joburg and the Bulls beat Western Province 48-23 in Cape Town.

Beefy Bartho Hlekani can fill a big hole for Lions after injury blow against the Sharks in Currie Cup
Angelo Davids of the Lions scores, despite the attentions of Phiko Sobahle of the Sharks at Emirates Airline Park this past weekend. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix The Lions' handsome 46-5 Currie Cup victory over the Sharks came at a cost, with flank Izan Esterhuizen suffering a serious injury. However, this setback could be offset by the timely arrival of burly Bathobele Hlekani, a Junior Springbok who made a huge impact in Italy. Hlekani has been with the Sharks but, curiously, has slipped out of their net. His signature is a significant coup for a Lions squad that usually sees players going the other way — to Durban, as has been the recent case with Springbok Edwill van der Merwe and Emmanuel Tshituka. Lions coach Mzwakhe Nkosi said they would like Hlekani to join them pronto. 'Izan's injury looks like a season-ender,' Nkosi said. 'We will try and get Batho to Joburg sooner rather than later. Yeah, he's probably out for the season, so we have to scramble hard. I just spoke to the CEO; we will have to source another openside flanker as soon as possible,' the coach added. The Lions outclassed a Sharks side that was packed with newcomers. With ball in hand, Bathobele Hlekani drives forward, a formidable force who will soon bring his Junior Springbok power and talent to the Lions' pack. Photo: World Rugby Image: World Rugby 'I wouldn't say we were a more experienced side, but we are probably more settled,' Nkosi said. 'Nico Steyn just turned 22, and Jarrod Cairns has only just turned 23. SJ Kotze is still 21; RF Schoeman hasn't turned 22 yet. We are probably a whole lot more settled than JP's team (Pietersen's). When SJ came on, I thought he made a difference.' 'I am happy with the level of performance,' Nkosi continued. 'We were a bit apprehensive. We haven't played a game. The Pumas have played two or three, Griquas have played, and Province have played two. "So, we and the Bulls have gone in cold. We were nervous. So it's good that we got the cobwebs out, and also that we got a result like we got.' Nkosi praised the performances of Angelo Davids and Rabs Maxwane, who were constant threats on attack. Davids has joined the Lions from the Stormers. 'If you can have guys like Angelo and Rabs on the edges, you want to get the ball to them sooner rather than later. That's who we are and how we want to play. "Angelo will hit his straps. He must have had three games in two seasons. He has been frustrated; his game hasn't improved at the trajectory that he would have liked. "So, hopefully, before the start of the URC, he can get to a place where he can compete. And obviously, there is a vacancy with the departure of Edwill van der Merwe, so hopefully, he can put his hand up to stake a claim in that URC team.'
