CSK need to stick with their youngsters: Aaron Finch's advice to struggling IPL team

India Today03-05-2025
Former Australian captain Aaron Finch said that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) should focus on investing in youngsters going forward in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Super Kings are the five-time champions, but became the first team to be knocked out of the 2025 edition. They started with a win over Mumbai Indians (MI), but have lost eight out of nine matches since then. CSK are languishing right down the bottom of the table with four points and a net run rate of -1.211. The Super Kings roped in the likes of Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre and Dewlad Brevis, but couldn't make their way through to the playoffs.advertisementFinch, who led Australia to glory in the Men's T20 World Cup 2021, said that the Super Kings will play for pride while trying to spoil the party of other teams in the race to qualify for the playoffs.
'Yeah, I think they've been really open and honest about where their squad is at the moment—trying to gather as much information as they can about the current group of players and the youngsters coming through. They've brought Brevis into the side, and they're exploring how to use Shivam Dube more effectively. I think that's all valuable information for them moving forward,' Finch told Star Sports.'Like I said earlier, at this stage, you can really take pride in trying to disrupt other teams. For me, they need to stick with the youngsters—they've come too far to back out now. They just need to play for pride,' Finch added.advertisementThe Super Kings will next be up against Rajat Patidar's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday, May 3 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It's the first time in IPL history that CSK won't feature in the IPL playoffs in two seasons on the trot.Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir slammed for ‘wrong tactics' as India allow England for revival via Harry Brook, Jamie Smith

Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir were once put in the dock for poor strategies after India allowed England to crawl back into the game during the first innings of the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Friday. Starting the day on 77/3, England were in a spot of bother when they lost overnight batter Joe Root and captain Ben Stokes in successive deliveries with just 84 runs on board. What followed was a counterattack by Jamie Smith and Harry Brook, thanks to India's baffling tactics, leaving the former cricketers stunned. Coming in the middle at no.7, Smith smashed the highest Test score (184 not out) by an English wicketkeeper and forged a 302-run stand for the sixth wicket with Harry Brook (158) to pull England out of the well. While Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) got all the 10 wickets, Prasidh Krishna became the target of the Smith-Brook duo as they smashed the Indian pacer all round the park. To add more to that, Krishna's tactical ploy of attacking with a barrage of short balls failed completely. With the pitch offering help on the good length deliveries, Gill's decision to go for the short-ball strategy after discussion with the Indian think-tank didn't go well with the former cricketers, especially Mohammad Kaif, who took to social media to express his frustration. 'At 84/5, India should have shown patience. The ball was moving, they could have stuck to the good old line and length bowling. By going for the short-pitch against Smith and Brook, India played in England's hand. Chance missed because of wrong tactics,' Kaif wrote on X. Former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh also echoed the same. 'Strange tactics from India. Nearly 300 in front and have resorted to trying to buy a wicket caught in the deep,' said Waugh. Despite the two hundreds from Brook and Smith, England could only manage 407 in the first innings in reply to India's 587. As many as six England batters fell for ducks, thus helping India take a 180-run lead. In the process, Smith surpassed former cricketer Alec Stewart for the highest Test score by an England wicketkeeper. Stewart had scored 173 against New Zealand at Auckland in 1997.

One And Done! Ben Shelton Wraps Up Wimbledon Match In One Minute Upon Resumption

Ben Shelton swiftly completed his suspended match at Wimbledon, defeating Rinky Hijikata in just 55 seconds to advance to the third round. There was no time to waste for Ben Shelton, who needed less than a minute on Friday to complete a suspended match and book his spot in the Wimbledon third round. The 10th-seeded American returned to Court Two and took just 55 seconds to seal a 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Australia's Rinky Hijikata. Ben Shelton spent a total of 1 minute on court today 😭Wimbledon… — The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) July 4, 2025 Yesterday, Ben Shelton's match with Rinky Hijikata was suspended at 9:29 PM local time with him one game away from Shelton took only ONE MINUTE to get the win and advance to the third round at Wimbledon 😤 — ESPN (@espn) July 4, 2025 Shelton had been on the verge of victory late Thursday evening, poised to serve for the match at 6–2, 7–5, 5–4. But as light faded on the roofless, floodlight-free Court Two, officials made the call to suspend play at 9:30 p.m., despite Shelton needing only one more game. Moments earlier, the 22-year-old had held three match points on Hijikata's serve at love-40. The 87th-ranked Australian, however, responded with poise, reeling off five consecutive points to stay alive. Shelton, visibly irritated, pleaded with the chair umpire—shouting 'just one more game"—as boos echoed from the stands. Shelton, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2023, continues his impressive Grand Slam form. He made semifinal runs at both the 2023 U.S. Open and 2025 Australian Open and now stands one win away from matching his best result at the All England Club. Next up for the American is Hungarian lucky loser Márton Fucsovics, with a place in the last 16 on the line. First Published: July 04, 2025, 19:39 IST
