Tirupati: Controversy marred the reopening of the 150-year-old VR school on the very first day as endowments minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy raised objection to the renaming the school as VR municipal corporation school.

Soon after HRD minister Nara Lokesh formally reopened the school on Monday, Ramnarayana Reddy expressed his displeasure over the renaming of the school in his address. The school, which was established in 1875, was shut down in 2021 during the erstwhile YSRCP regime. Till then, control of the British era school's management was with the Anam family, considered a powerful political family in Nellore since the times of AC Subba Reddy, who was the first person from the Anam family to rise to the position of state minister.
While former legislator Anam Vivekananda Reddy continued as the president of the management committee of VR college and school for several decades, Ramnarayana Reddy, the present endowments minister, was the president of the committee around the time of the school's closure in 2021. After Lokesh reopened the school, the minister raised his objection over the renaming of the school as VR municipal corporation school, just because municipal administration minister Ponguru Narayana extended support for its development and reopening.
"The erstwhile YSRCP regime bore a grudge against me and got me removed from the management committee's president position. However, the management of VR school still wrests with the Anam family," he asserted. In an apparent dig aimed at fellow cabinet minister Narayana, he suggested that the municipal administration minister should adopt and develop more govt schools in the state. "Narayana ventured into politics only after tasting success with the corporate schools established by him across the state.

But ours is a family with very long political legacy. We have been in politics from the very beginning," he said.
After remaining closed for four years, the school was renovated and upgraded to international standards by the NDA govt in the state, mainly due to the efforts of Narayana. In a noble gesture, the school has provided admissions to nearly 1,000 students from underprivileged sections of the society.
Lokesh visited all the classrooms and interacted with students and teaching staff. He also visited the playground. "This school provided education to stalwarts from all walks of life, like former Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, playback singer SP Balasubramanyam, senior leaders Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy and Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, to name a few. It is my dream to transform school education in the state in a big way by upgrading govt schools in the state to corporate school standards," he said.

Jagraon: Rare political unity: Oppn, farm unions join hands to protest land pooling policy

In a rare show of unity, leaders of all major political parties in opposition and prominent farmer organisations came together on one platform in Jagraon on Monday to oppose the Punjab government's land pooling policy. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring added that while land acquisition has existed since British times, it was the Congress-led UPA government under Dr Manmohan Singh that brought a transformative law requiring 80% consent from landowners before any acquisition. (HT Photo) The protest held at the local tehsil checkpoint, saw participation from senior Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and BJP leaders, along with several grassroots-level farmer leaders and activists. Addressing the crowd, former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi launched a scathing attack on chief minister Bhagwant Mann, accusing him of handing over Punjab's agricultural land to outside forces. 'Before the elections, I warned people that the 'outsiders' do not care about Punjab. But no one listened. Today, we see the consequences,' Channi said. He vowed that if Congress is voted back to power, reversing this policy would be their first decision. 'Every inch of land taken will be returned to the farmers,' he promised, calling upon all Punjabis to unite against the government's move. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring added that while land acquisition has existed since British times, it was the Congress-led UPA government under Dr Manmohan Singh that brought a transformative law requiring 80% consent from landowners before any acquisition. 'Despite this protection, if the land is forcibly taken, we will not stay silent. The Congress will launch a full-scale agitation and will gherao the GLADA office in Ludhiana on July 14,' he announced. MLA Sukhpal Khaira alleged that the CM has become a mere puppet in the hands of Delhi leadership. 'This is not just about land—it's a calculated strategy to erase Punjab's identity as an agriculture-based state. The land will be handed over to corporate mafias,' he said. Voicing similar concerns, Akali leader and MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali, BJP's advocate Vikramjit Singh Sindhu, and former Akali MLA SR Kler stressed that the land pooling policy is a direct threat to the entire state. 'This is a fight for Punjab's future. If our land is lost, our economy will collapse. The CM is merely following orders from Delhi,' they claimed. The protest was also addressed by several other leaders and representatives of various organisations including Congress general secretary Capt Sandeep Sandhu, Didar Singh Malak and Gurvinder Singh Panna from the Land Pooling Policy Sangharsh Committee, former MLAs Tarsam Jadha and Kamaljit Singh Brar, former Congress district president Karanjit Soni Ghalib, former chairman Satinderpal Singh Kaka Gurwal, Kamaljit Singh Mallah, engineer Jagdeep Singh, and farmer leaders Mahinder Singh Kamalpura, Jagtar Singh Daharka, Gurdial Singh Talwandi, among others. Government's position The Punjab cabinet had last month given its nod to the land pooling policy and asserted that not even a single yard will be forcibly acquired from land owners. Under the land pooling policy, a land owner will be given 1,000 square yards of residential plot and 200 square yards of commercial plot in fully developed land in lieu of one acre of land, the state government had said earlier. The government had also said that the land pooling policy was designed to foster transparent and planned urban development across the state.

Macron-Starmer meeting: France, UK to announce plans to block migrant boats in English Channel

France will likely announce plans to authorise its police force to stop the small boats from leaving in shallow waters up to 300 metres from shore read more A British police officer stands guard on the beach of Dungeness, on the southeast coast of England, on 15 June, 2022, as Royal National Lifeboat Institution's (RNLI) members of staff help migrants to disembark. (Photo: AFP file) Britain and France are set to announce plans to deploy French Police to block the entry of small migrant boats crossing the Channel as leaders from both countries are expected to meet in London on Tuesday. French President Emmanuel Macron will begin his state visit to the UK on July 8, where he will meet the royal family and hold a string of meetings with government officials, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during the Anglo-French summit. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Although details are still limited and French officials are reportedly finalising possible actions regarding boats already in shallow waters, an announcement related to the immigrant issue is expected on Wednesday. What do the plans include? According to a report by The Guardian, France will likely announce plans to authorise its police force to stop the small boats from leaving in shallow waters up to 300 metres from shore. It will also halt 'taxi boats' from setting out on their journeys to cross the Channel. Taxi boats are used to pick up migrants from the water instead of launching from the beach. However, if France decides to do so, changes to the existing protocol, which bars any intervention at sea that is not an actual rescue, to be made. Starmer and the French president might announce a 'one in, one out' plan for asylum seekers, though UK officials say it's unlikely. The idea is that people arriving in small boats could be sent back to France, while the UK would take in someone from France who has a clearer right to come to Britain, such as a family link. Macron to visit UK French-speaking King Charles III, who is hosting President Emmanuel Macron for a state visit starting on Tuesday, professes a long-standing love of France, describing it as 'an essential part' of his life. The visit, at the invitation of the monarch, is a rare privilege full of spectacular pomp and circumstance and an opportunity to strengthen a bilateral relationship which the king called 'indispensable' during his visit to France in September 2023. Macron will also address the British Parliament and co-chair a meeting on Ukraine as London seeks to strengthen its ties with Europe after Brexit. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Talks will focus on aid to Ukraine, joint efforts to halt illegal migration crossing the Channel, and strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries. 'This is the first state visit to the United Kingdom by a European Union head of state since Brexit,' the Elysee Palace said on Friday, referring to the UK's 2016 vote to leave the bloc. Anam comments stirs political tension

Nellore: The statement of Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy sparked controversy, which he said at the public meeting at VRC grounds on the occasion of inauguration of Venkatagiri Raja Municipal Corporation High School (VRMCHS) in Nellore on Monday. Minister Lokesh inaugurated VRMCHS on Monday, which was once called as VR High School and renovated with Rs 15 crore with the initiation of Minister P Narayana. It was renamed as VRMCHS. Anam criticised the renaming of the school to VRMCHS, indirectly warning Narayana of dire consequences if the original name, VR High School, wasn't restored. Anam argued that renaming the school, despite its renovation through Narayana's efforts, was unjustified. He demanded that Narayana and the Nellore Municipal Commissioner explain the rationale behind the name change, even with philanthropic funding. He expressed concern that such actions could lead to all 54 municipal schools in Nellore falling under corporate control, away from the Nellore Municipal Corporation's authority. Minister Anam emphasised that past philanthropists, contractors, and bankers, who donated significantly to revive VR High School and its institutions never pushed for corporatisation, as they lacked vested interests. He recalled how corporate education, originating from Guntur district years ago, burdened poor and middle-class families with high costs, making municipal schools their only viable option. He noted that many politicians in Nellore, including his family, came from modest backgrounds, unlike Narayana, whom he claimed entered politics from the corporate sector. He clarified that he supported reviving municipal schools with external funding but urged that their original names be preserved. Minister Ramanarayana Reddy's remarks, made during the VRMCHS inauguration, stirred political tension, highlighting the clash between preserving traditional identities and modernising educational institutions through corporate involvement. He humbly requested Narayana to reconsider renaming municipal schools, advocating for their historical names to remain intact.
