Railway Board considering Attipattu–Gummidipoondi line expansion proposal

Time of Indiaa day ago
CHENNAI: After over a year's wait, the Railway Board is finally considering
Southern Railway
's Rs 365.42crore proposal to construct third and fourth lines between Attipattu and Gummidipoondi -- a 22.52 km stretch that forms part of the high-density Delhi–Chennai route and the Chennai–
Visakhapatnam
and Chennai–Bengaluru industrial corridors.
The proposal, submitted under the national umbrella for multi-tracking and bypass lines to ease congestion, has received endorsements from key railway departments. The railway ministry's formal approval is now awaited.
Once cleared, the project is expected to boost capacity, cut train detention time and generate an additional 8.71 million tonnes per annum of freight traffic. Financial and economic returns are pegged at 15.84% and 28.88%, respectively.

The stretch is already operating at full capacity, with utilisation projected to reach 107% by 2027–28. Southern Railway has completed the final location survey, and the alignment is free of major land acquisition issues.
But for residents and regular commuters in Gummidipoondi and Northern Chennai, the relief has been a long time coming.
'This is not a new demand. The proposal has been gathering dust for over a year,' said Suresh, a Gummidipoondi resident and advocate.

'This delay has disrupted commute, freight flow, and our region's economic momentum.'
The corridor serves hundreds of suburban and freight trains daily and directly connects to Ennore and Kamarajar ports, SIPCOT Industrial Park and North Chennai thermal plants. With suburban services recently upgraded from nine-car to 12-car EMUs, passenger volume has also surged.

Ahmedabad: A 48-year-old businessman from Naranpura fell victim to a cyberfraud after he contacted a number listed online for a piped gas company. The unidentified fraudster, posing as a company representative, duped him of Rs 3 lakh under the pretext of updating e-KYC details. The incident came to light after the businessman filed a complaint of cheating and criminal breach of trust at the Naranpura police station on Friday. According to the FIR, the victim was trying to surrender the gas connection from his old house and searched for the agency's contact number on the internet. He contacted one of the numbers but couldn't get through. Later, he received a callback from a person claiming to be from the gas agency, who offered to assist with the surrender process. Alarmed, he blocked all his accounts, debit and credit cards, and online banking services. Despite this, transactions worth nearly Rs 3 lakh were made between 10.56 am and 11.16 am the same day. The businessman informed the city's cybercrime unit and later lodged a formal complaint with Naranpura police station.

Delhi court declares arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari fugitive

New Delhi: A special court here on Saturday declared absconding arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari a fugitive economic offender (FEO), finding force in the Enforcement Directorate 's (ED) case accusing him of money laundering . Significantly, the Court did not find "any substance" in the ground taken by Bhandari's counsel that since the UK High Court (in February) turned down the Indian government's extradition request , Bhandari has a right to reside in the UK. The court rejected the argument of Bhandari's counsel that the failure of India's extradition request in the UK High Court in February gave him the right to reside in the UK. "Extradition attempt may have failed, but it will not make the accused an angel or immune from prosecution for the violation of Indian laws," it observed in its detailed order. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... "FEO proceedings are another way of making one come back to India to face trial by coercing him to return by attachment, confiscation of the properties of such fugitive economic offender and proceeds of crime and by dis-entitling such fugitive economic offender from putting forward or defending any civil claim," the order said. Live Events Bhandari "always has an option to return back to India to get the termination of proceedings under FEO Act and to avoid adverse consequences," it clarified. Therefore, when he chooses not to return, "he cannot take the plea of avoiding all the legal consequences including that of Section 14 of the FEO Act," the special court said.
