TikTok 'content check' tells creators if their videos will be blocked from For You pages

Engadget3 days ago
TikTok's "For You" recommendations have long been a source of mystery and fascination for creators on the platform. Even the most seasoned TikTok stars don't always understand why some videos go viral and some don't. And there's long been lots of speculation about the types of content that is and isn't acceptable to the app's recommendation algorithm.
Now, the company is looking to give creators more transparency into its recommendations. TikTok is testing out a "content check" feature that will allow creators to preview whether their videos have issues that might prevent them from appearing in the coveted "For You" feed.
TikTok is kicking it off with a web-based feature called "Content Check Lite" that will be available on desktop in TikTok Studio. The feature will check uploaded videos for "For You" eligibility and flag potential issues before posting. The company also says it's in the "early stages" of experimenting with a "broader" content check feature that can check "content against all our Community Guidelines before it goes live on platform," and offer specific feedback on changes that can help correct ineligible content. A "small group" of creators are currently part of the test, according to the company.
TikTok has already tested a version of this for TikTok Shop sellers, and says the feature has already resulted in a 27 percent reduction in "low-quality uploads" to the app. The feature could also help the company increase trust with creators, who often speculate about "shadow bans" and why some videos don't get as many views as they expect.
"Ultimately, our goal is to help creators understand our rules and make sure that they can know how best to build that audience and build that thriving following on TikTok," TikTok's head of operations and trust and safety, Adam Presser, said during a press event. "We're excited to learn from the pilot, and hope to have more to share ahead in the next few months."
The company is also adding several other updates for creators, including new muting and filtering controls that make it easier to weed out specific terms from comments in live streams and other posts. The app is also getting a designated "creator inbox" to make it easier to manage messaging in the app. Creators who want to have a separate space to interact with followers will also be able to take advantage of "creator chat rooms," which allows eligible accounts to make a dedicated space for chats with up to 300 followers.

Seen sitting in a car in the video, Earle said, 'My Co–Star told me that I can start s--- today," referring to the popular astrology app. 'I mean, is this my time that I've been waiting for to go? I have so much information. We could go," she continued to tease, then adding: "I wake up every day, and I'm like, 'What should I do Co-Star?' And today, it's like, 'Revenge. Let's go get 'em.' (Earle was one of the first stars signed by the media startup in 2023.) Cooper responded to the rumors of a rift on TikTok at the time, stating, "Alix not being able to podcast has nothing to do with Unwell. [I don't know] why she can't/what's going on." Related: Earle also recently appeared on another SI Swim issue this year, and she is set to be a contestant on the upcoming season 34 of Dancing with the Stars. Cooper, meanwhile, continues her podcast, and she recently released a two-part docuseries, Call Her Alex, available to stream now on Hulu. Read the original article on People

A US-Only TikTok? What We Know So Far About the Potential Replacement App

A new version of the TikTok mobile app for people in the US is reportedly being developed by the vertical video social media network's owner ByteDance. It will replace the current version of TikTok being used in the US ahead of a September deadline for the Chinese company to divest ownership, according to a report last month by The Information. The new app, codenamed "M2," could launch on Sept. 5. If you're in the US, you would then be required to switch from the existing app to the new one, the report said, citing anonymous sources. US President Donald Trump recently extended a deadline for the owner to sell its US-based TikTok assets by Sept. 17. In July, Trump said he found a buyer for the company, which he called a group of "very, very wealthy people." The administration has continued to extend deadlines for TikTok to remain operational since January when it was shut down for less than 24 hours. The company reportedly has 170 million users in the US. A representative for TikTok did not respond to a request for comment. According to The Information, the reason for the new app version is also due to an Apple App Store restriction that does not allow multiple versions of an app for different regions to appear in the same listing. What a US TikTok app would mean for you If the report is accurate, it would mean that at the very least, anybody who uses the TikTok mobile app would eventually be required to migrate to a new US-centric version. But there's likely to be a lengthy grace period, according to The Information's sources: the old app may not disappear completely until March 2026, giving you six months to make the transition. Still, it could be disruptive for those whose business or brand relies on the platform. "Anytime there is a migration or a major feature revamp on any network, it certainly creates work and worry," said Jennie Smythe, an author and founder and CEO of Girlilla Marketing, which has worked with clients including Willie Nelson, Terry Crews and Iliza Shlesinger. "There are concerns that audiences will also make the move and if the migration will be worth the effort," Smythe told CNET in an email. "The bigger concern besides the migration are the features and data that will be available to us in the creator economy as well as the audience restrictions (i.e. is our content/audience also restricted to US only?)." It's unclear if the new app would include any other major changes or improvements over the existing app or if it would restrict or filter viewing content from other regions in ways that differ from the current version.
