Indonesia's Navy seizes ship carrying methamphetamine an, cocaine worth RM1.825 billion; a Thai and four Myanmar nationals arrested
Officers apprehended the ship after it turned off its lights and increased its speed to try to flee Indonesian waters in the Tanjung Balai Karimun region of Riau Islands province, the navy said.
Officers seized nearly 100 yellow and white sacks holding about 1.2 tons of cocaine and 705 kilograms of methamphetamine worth 7 trillion rupiah ($425.92 million), navy spokesperson, I Made Wira Hady Arsanta Wardhana, said in a statement.
Indonesia has among the world's strictest anti-narcotics laws and drug trafficking is punishable by death.
The navy said the ship, bearing a Thai flag, was taken to a navy base in Tanjung Balai Karimun. It did not give details of the crew members' origins apart from their nationalities.
Officials are still investigating where the drugs came from and where the ship was headed, navy official Fauzi, who goes by one name, said in a press conference.
The seizure is among the largest busts in the country.
A record 190 tons of methamphetamine were seized in East and Southeast Asia in 2023 as organised crime groups exploited weak law enforcement to traffic the drugs, mainly via the Gulf of Thailand, the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime said in a 2024 report.
The Golden Triangle - an area of northeast Myanmar that meets parts of Thailand and Laos - has a long history of producing drugs, mainly used by Asian crime syndicates which distribute the narcotics as far as Japan and New Zealand.
In 2022, 179 kg (395 lb) of cocaine were found in waters near the port of Merak on Java island, at the time the largest cocaine seizure in the country, the United Nations drug agency said in a 2023 global report on cocaine. ($1 = 16,435.0000 rupiah)

Missing Thai fisherman found safe near Pulau Tioman
MERSING: A Thai fisherman reported missing two days ago was found safe by local fishermen near Pulau Tioman this morning. The foreigner, identified as 33-year-old Wasan Thamuangnly, had gone to sea alone on Tuesday aboard a fishing vessel and lost contact about 4.4 nautical miles east of Pulau Pemanggil, here. Johor Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency acting director maritime Captain Kama Azri Kamil, who confirmed the incident, said the fishermen spotted the victim at 8.40am. He was brought to the Endau Fisheries jetty, where his identity was confirmed by the vessel owner. A Thai interpreter was also brought in to assist with the interview, he said in a statement today.

Cambodia asks Thailand to release detained soldiers as truce holds

(AFP pic) PHNOM PENH: Cambodia accused Thailand today of detaining 20 of its soldiers and killing another in post-ceasefire incidents, as a fragile peace held for a third day along their disputed border. Five days of intense clashes between the Southeast Asian neighbours that began last week killed at least 43 people, many of them civilians, and displaced more than 300,000, until a truce brokered in Malaysia on Monday halted the fighting. Thailand has since accused Cambodian troops of violating the ceasefire multiple times, a charge denied by authorities in Phnom Penh, who instead allege that the Thai military has wrongfully detained a number of its soldiers. 'We appeal to the Thai side to promptly return all 20 of our forces, including other forces if any are under Thai control,' Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said today. In a statement, senior Cambodian defence official lieutenant general Rath Dararoth said one Cambodian soldier had died in Thai custody since the ceasefire and his body had been returned. He did not provide further details. Thailand currently has custody of 20 Cambodian soldiers who had surrendered, including two who are under medical treatment, Thai rear admiral Surasant Kongsiri told reporters. 'We are investigating them to verify the facts. After this is finished, they will be released,' Thailand's acting prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai said, stressing the Thai military had not violated the ceasefire agreement. As per talks between military commanders held after Monday's truce announcement, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to facilitate the return of wounded soldiers and bodies of those deceased, besides refraining from reinforcing troops along the border. Cambodia took military attaches and diplomats to a border checkpoint yesterday to verify the ceasefire as both sides exchanged accusations of violating the truce. For decades, Thailand and Cambodia have wrangled over undemarcated points along their 817km land border, with ownership of the ancient Hindu temples Ta Moan Thom and the 11th century Preah Vihear central to the disputes. The recent truce followed a push by Malaysia and calls by US President Donald Trump's phone calls to leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, warning them that trade deals would not be concluded if the fighting continued. Both countries face a tariff of 36% on goods sent to the US, their biggest export market.
