MANILA: Majority of Filipinos disagree with the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte in connection with the extrajudicial killings allegedly committed during his administration's war against illegal drugs, the latest Pulse Asia survey showed.
Based on the 'Pulso ng Bayan' survey of Pulse Asia conducted from May 6 to 9, 58 percent of the 1,200 respondents asserted that Duterte should not have been arrested and tried in the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Pulse Asia specified the breakdowns of disagreement percentages, with 33 percent strongly disagreeing while 25 percent somewhat disagreeing.
On the other hand, 26 percent of the respondents said that it is just right for Duterte to get arrested and face charges.
Ten percent strongly agreed with the arrest of the former president, while 16 percent somewhat agreed.
The survey likewise showed that 16 percent cannot say whether they agree or disagree with the current situation of Duterte.
Mindanao: 96% disagree
Ninety six percent of those surveyed in Mindanao disagreed with Duterte's arrest, and 60 percent in the Visayas, followed by Balance Luzon (provinces in Luzon outside Metro Manila) at 42 percent, and Metro Manila at 38 percent.
Mindanao is known as the bailiwick of the Dutertes.
In the recent 2025 midterm elections, Duterte was again elected mayor of Davao City, even though he was not able to campaign since he is currently under the custody of the ICC in The Hague, Netherlands.
Metro Manila: 43% agree
Meanwhile, Metro Manila had the most number of respondents who agreed with the arrest of the former President at 43 percent.
The capital region was followed by Balance Luzon (35 percent), Visayas (24 percent) and Mindanao (1 percent).
Last March, Duterte was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and brought to the ICC headquarters to face allegations of crimes against humanity allegedly committed in the war on drugs of his administration.
According to the official government data, the drug war of the Duterte administration claimed at least 6,000 lives.
Human rights watchdogs, however,, estimated the death toll to be between 12,000 and 30,000 from 2016 to 2019, noting that many of these incidents were extrajudicial killings. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

RM11.87 million crude palm oil smuggling syndicates busted in Sabah

Among the seizures and arrests made during one of the Op Kontraban (Op Taring Palma) raids. KOTA KINABALU (July 15): The Sabah Brigade General Operations Force (GOF) has dismantled a network of crude palm oil (CPO) smuggling syndicates operating along the west and east coasts of Sabah through a series of raids conducted since January. Sabah Brigade GOF Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rani Alias, said eight raids were carried out under Op Kontraban (Op Taring Palma), involving various GOF battalions. 'The operation involved personnel from BN14 Tawau, BN15 Sandakan, BN16 Kota Kinabalu, BN17 Lahad Datu, BN20 Beluran, BN21 Keningau and BN22 Kunak,' he said in a statement on Tuesday. A total of 26 individuals were arrested — comprising 21 local men, four Filipinos and one Indonesian. Abdul Rani said the suspects were believed to be involved in the illegal storage and transfer of CPO without valid licences and had failed to submit the required documentation. 'The total value of the seizures is estimated at RM11.87 million, which includes CPO worth RM1.89 million, vehicles such as lorries and trailers worth RM9.32 million, and various equipment valued at RM650,890,' he said. He added that the operation successfully disrupted the activities of organised syndicates involved in the illegal distribution and smuggling of CPO across Sabah's coasts. The GOF, he said, will continue to conduct such operations to safeguard public safety and ensure the well-being of the community. Abdul Rani also urged the public to report any suspicious activities in their areas to the authorities.

Mohammed Siraj fined for Ben Duckett send-off in Lord's Test

INDIA fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has been penalised with a 15 percent deduction of his match fee for an aggressive send-off directed at England's Ben Duckett during the ongoing third Test at Lord's. The International Cricket Council confirmed the disciplinary action on Monday. The incident occurred after Siraj dismissed Duckett in England's second innings on Sunday. The Indian pacer was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits actions that could provoke an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batter. Siraj's celebration, deemed excessive and conducted in close proximity to Duckett, resulted in an additional demerit point on his disciplinary record. This marks his second offence within 24 months, following a previous incident during the 2024 Adelaide Test against Australia. The 29-year-old admitted to the violation and accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Richie Richardson, avoiding a formal hearing. Under ICC regulations, accumulating four or more demerit points within two years leads to suspension points, potentially resulting in match bans. Two suspension points translate to a one-Test ban or exclusion from two limited-overs matches, depending on the player's schedule. Siraj's previous demerit point was issued on December 7, 2024, during the second Test against Australia.
