Diogo Jota and brother's bodies greeted by heartbroken mourners ahead of funeral
The bodies of Diogo Jota and his brother arrived at a church in Portugal surrounded by mourners ahead of the pair's funerals at the weekend. The Liverpool star and his sibling Andre Silva died in a devastating car crash in Spain on Thursday evening.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene but were unable to save either Jota or his brother as flames engulfed their vehicle. An outpouring of grief and tributes have come from across the footballing landscape since the news was shared.
Liverpool shared a series of touching messages, while current and former teammates of both men have shared their own heartfelt tributes. And while the footballing world is still reeling at the tragedy, planning is already underway for an official farewell to both men.
Their bodies arrived at a church in Gondomar, Portugal late on Thursday evening via hearse. Dozens of mourners were already gathered to pay their respects, with more expected to attend on Friday.
Jose Manuel Macedo, the local parish priest, confirmed that a private wake would take place in the Portuguese town on Friday, beginning at 8am. It was set to take place at Capela de Ressurreicao. A funeral service is also expected to be held at the nearby catholic church Igreja Matriz on Saturday at 10am.
'We're available to celebrate [their life] with everyone and to share the pain and the Christian hope,' Macedo told CNN.
Jota's agent Jorge Mendes was among those to accompany the star's mother at the funeral home. In tears, he said: 'We lost two great people. Diogo is an example as a person, husband, son, professional. I still can't believe it, it's very difficult.'
The funeral of both men is set to take place just half an hour away from the Portuguese city of Porto, where they both grew up. It was also the same place that the 28-year-old married Rute Cardoso just two weeks ago.
Ahead of the wake, a statement from Gondomar Town Hall read: 'Gondomar Town Hall expresses its deepest sympathy at the death of international footballer Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, illustrious Gondomar residents who left prematurely, leaving behind a remarkable sporting career and an example of dedication and professionalism.
'Throughout his career, Diogo Jota stood out for his footballing talent and for the committed way in which he always represented the region and the country, winning national and international recognition.
'At this time of sorrow and consternation, Gondomar Town Hall extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of these two Gondomar residents.
'By way of tribute, the Mayor of Gondomar Luis Filipe Araujo, has decreed by official order a day of municipal mourning to be observed this Friday, 4 July. During this period, the municipal flag will be flown at half-mast in all municipal buildings and facilities.'
Jota and his brother were driving to catch a ferry from Santander back to the UK after being advised by doctors not to fly. But they never reached their destination after being involved in the fatal accident.
Liverpool are set to return for pre-season testing on Monday. But instead, the Reds will now be paying tribute to their star, as confirmed by Liverpool boss Arne Slot in an emotional statement.
He said: 'The last time we spoke, I congratulated Diogo on winning the Nations League and wished him luck for his forthcoming wedding. In many ways, it was a dream summer for Diogo and his family, which makes it all the more heartbreaking that it should end like this.
'When I first came to the club, one of the first songs I got to know was the one that our fans sing for Diogo. I had not worked with him previously but I knew straight away that if the Liverpool supporters, who have seen so many great players over the years, had such a unique chant for Diogo, he must have special qualities.
'That we have lost those qualities in such terrible circumstances is something we have not yet come to terms with. For this reason, we need everyone at the club to stand together and to be there for one another. We owe this to Diogo, to Andre Silva, to their wider family and to ourselves.
'My condolences go to Diogo's wife, Rute, their three beautiful children and to the parents of Diogo and Andre Silva. When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals and we will sing his song. For the time being, we will remember him as a unique human being and mourn his loss. He will never be forgotten.'
Fans and supporters have since been leaving tributes at both Anfield and Molineux, while flags have been flown at half-mast as a show of respect.

Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal: Legal letter issued as transfer saga grows bitter after Man Utd bid
Viktor Gyokeres is being pursued by Arsenal and Manchester United and his relationship with Sporting Lisbon has crumbled in the past few weeks amid competing agendas Viktor Gyokeres' difficult and prolonged exit from Sporting Lisbon continues to get even more bitter after the striker sent a legal letter to his employers. Gyokeres will leave Sporting in the summer transfer window, but the question of what his legacy will be like once he departs remains to be seen amid a war of words. Arsenal and Sporting have verbally agreed a deal in principle worth an initial £55million plus £8.6m in add-ons and bonuses for Gyokeres. But Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta and Sporting chiefs have so far failed to yield a full agreement over the make-up of the fees. That has potentially opened the door for Manchester United, who have submitted their own bid at the last moment in an effort to hijack the move. Reports in Portugal state that United have tabled their own offer worth €70-80million (£60-69m) as they try to get a reunion for Ruben Amorim and his former Sporting striker. It remains to be seen whether United's last-gasp effort comes to fruition, but one thing is for sure: Gyokeres has burned his bridges at Sporting. The 27-year-old striker has been desperate to get his exit sealed and has been willing to go to war with Sporting president Federico Varandas in order to get what he wants. The two have been trading barbs through the Portuguese press throughout the summer, with the main conflict centred upon a supposed gentleman's agreement they had. Gyokeres feels Varandas had agreed to let him go if a buyer stumped up €60m plus €10m, but the club chief has rejected that ever happened. Gyokeres has since gone on strike and is refusing to turn up for pre-season training with Sporting, saying he will never play for them again. Sporting have therefore begun disciplinary proceedings against their striker. Record now say that Gyokeres has, via his legal representatives, issued a legal letter in response. It states his case that Varandas is to blame for his absence because he has gone back on his word. It's a messy situation that has come about because the Portuguese club are trying to get the best fee possible for their star. He is under contract until June 2028 and Varandas has been happy to play hard ball in negotiations – and make his stance plain in public. 'If they don't want to pay Viktor's fair market value, we're very comfortable with that for the next three years," he said recently. "This strategy is also making it more complicated for the player to leave. Nobody is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are. We're calm. Everything will be resolved with the market closing, a hefty fine and an apology to the group.' He added: "One thing you should already know is me better. Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m+10m because I never promised him that. This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres, neither today nor last season." Bayern Munich make final decision on Luis Diaz transfer after Liverpool rejected £58.5m bid
Bayern Munich were left with a quandary after their £58.5million bid for Luis Diaz was rejected by Liverpool, despite him wanting to leave the club this summer Liverpool are braced for a second bid from Bayern Munich after the German giants made it clear that signing Luis Diaz is their top priority. Diaz, 28, was the subject of a £58.5million bid from Bayern earlier this week. That offer was flatly rejected by Liverpool, leaving Vincent Kompany's side with a decision to make. Bayern have also been in talks with Stuttgart over signing highly-rated striker Nick Woltemade. The 23-year-old registered eight goals and assists in just five appearances at the recent under-21 European Championship, as Germany reached the final before losing to England in extra-time. But Stuttgart's lofty asking price of £55million has seen Bayern cool their pursuit of Woltemade. Now the Bundesliga champions are said to have paused negotiations altogether. Bild report that Bayern are fully focussed on Diaz and remain optimistic that a deal can be done. Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sporting director Max Eberl are prioritising talks with and want to finalise the move before the new season. Diaz is understood to be open to joining Bayern, especially after Barcelona - previously the favourites to sign the Colombian - shifted their attention to Marcus Rashford, who's set to join on loan from Manchester United. It's also understood that Diaz has informed Liverpool chiefs of his desire to leave. Bayern are planning to recruit at least one new forward this summer, targeting a winger who's able to provide for Harry Kane. That's after Leroy Sane failed to agree a new contract and signed for Galatasaray. Jamal Musiala then suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle during a horrific incident at the Club World Cup. But not everyone thinks that Diaz is the right man. Former Bayern and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann recently urged his old club to sign Brajan Gruda from Brighton instead. Hamann asked Sky Germany: "To now bring in Luis Diaz, a 28-year-old South American who played 50 games per season for four or five years and has those long flights home - which are also a problem - to pay 70 or 80 million for that, while the sale value is zero because he would be 32 at the end of his contract, I wonder what they even have the campus [academy] for?" "I would get Gruda," Hamann continued. "For me, he's one of the best German players. He was injured for a long time, but played very well towards the end of the season. Gruda can play on the outside and in the middle. He would be my first option." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Arteta was left to rue key injuries that hampered Arsenal's title charge last campaign with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus suffering long-term lay-offs at crucial times. Gabriel was also ruled out for the remainder of the season in April, requiring hamstring surgery – with attackers Saka and Havertz undergoing the same procedure. He is back and raring to go with the club now out in Singapore for their pre-season tour, facing AC Milan on Wednesday and Newcastle on the weekend, before travelling to Hong Kong to take on fierce rivals Tottenham.
