But for a growing number of professionals (even before 2025), the solution hasn't been in polishing their résumés, but in building personal brands that create true job security for them.

When done well, a strong personal brand attracts job offers before roles are even posted, leads to consulting or speaking opportunities, and opens the door to new networks that can't be accessed with a résumé alone.
For me, building my personal brand over the past 10+ years has meant creating content online (mostly on LinkedIn & Twitter), and writing for publications like Entrepreneur, Inc., The Next Web, and many others.
All these efforts have opened a lot of doors—from starting out as a freelance writer to running a six-figure content marketing agency, and then eventually becoming the cofounder of Leaps (an AI platform that helps people and teams turn their raw expertise and experience into content that builds their personal brands).
For this article, I spoke with four professionals who've used their personal brands to turn their careers around.
Andres Vourakis, a data scientist, built a safety net of opportunities and extra income after layoffs shook his early career. Ana Calin left a 15-year executive role and became the creator of one of Substack's fastest-growing newsletters, giving her complete freedom and a thriving business. Paul O'Brien, a veteran marketer, leveraged his reputation to evolve from 'the SEO guy' into a thought leader on startup economics and public policy. And Joei Chan, once a content marketing leader, turned unemployment into a creative rebrand that now draws clients who want her to tell their truth, show up fully, and build their brand with authenticity.
We got into fears, breakthroughs, identity work, and how building a personal brand is transforming not just their careers, but their lives.
From layoffs to lightbulbs
What made you realize you needed a personal brand, and how did that moment spark your journey?
Andres Vourakis: I was unfortunately laid off early in my career, and that experience opened my eyes to the real meaning of job security. I realized that job security wasn't about working hard to become an 'essential worker,' because at any moment, a business could decide to let you go.
And over the past few years, I've seen many talented friends become victims of massive layoffs in tech. That's when it really clicked for me: real job security is staying future-proof.
Building my personal brand is not only allowing me to grow, share my data science expertise, and connect with lots of great people, but it's also helping me generate extra income. It helps me sleep better at night knowing that my livelihood won't be decided by a business that may no longer find my work valuable tomorrow.
Ana Calin: I didn't set out to 'build a personal brand.' I just wanted freedom. I had just left my 15-year executive role; big title, global travel, the whole 'you made it' package. And yet, I felt done, ready for something that felt mine.
I remember staring at a blank LinkedIn post, wondering what to say. I had no niche, no strategy, no idea what people would care about. But I wrote anyway, about quitting, about reinvention, about starting from scratch. And people listened and responded. That was the spark. From that one post came DMs, leads, and ultimately a real business.
The first step: finding the confidence to show up
What was your very first step in building your personal brand, and what gave you the courage to share it publicly?
Joei Chan: The first real step was launching Brand New, my Substack newsletter. I was freshly unemployed, creatively raw, unsure of my next chapter. But I had this deep urge to tell the truth. To turn my mess into a message.
So I started writing. When I started posting online after being fired, there was definitely hesitation. I worried about looking unprofessional, scaring off future employers, or being labeled as 'emotional' or 'difficult.' But now I see vulnerability as a creative strategy. It's not oversharing, it's storytelling that names the deeper truth and helps others feel less alone.
From there, I started a video series called 'Rebranding My Life After Losing My 9 to 5.' It was scrappy and personal, just me, documenting the messy middle.
Paul O'Brien: Having come from Yahoo! and then helping HP take advantage of search engine optimization (SEO) and Google, it just clicked and made sense to kick off my personal brand and start sharing my expertise in public. What gave me confidence was that in 2002, very few people knew how to do SEO. Confidence to put yourself out there often comes from knowing that people will find value in what you have to offer.
Ana Calin: I stopped trying to sound smart and started sounding like myself. I didn't have a niche, and I wasn't selling anything.
But I had real stories about quitting, reinventing, and failing forward. I wrote a post on LinkedIn about walking away from my executive role. And it wasn't the highlight reel; the actual messy version. No strategy or call to action, but just truth. That one post brought in over 50,000 views. And that gave me the nudge I needed.
The unexpected rewards of showing up authentically
Looking back, what's one surprising way your life or career has improved because of your personal brand?
Ana Calin: I thought I was building a brand. Turns out, I was building a life. One with no boss, no Sunday scaries, no pretending. I found my voice, the one I had buried under 'professionalism' for 15 years. And when you find your voice, everything shifts. And you stop chasing opportunities, you start choosing the ones to accept as they come, thanks to your personal brand.
Joei Chan: I feel more me than I have in years. What began as a career crisis became the greatest rebrand of my life. It led me back to my voice, my creativity, and a deeper truth: The branding and creative work I love isn't just strategic, it's spiritual. And unexpectedly, this is the work people now come to me for: helping them reclaim their own story and show up fully as themselves.
Paul O'Brien: Being out there lets you evolve over time, as we all do. I started out known for SEO; I even leaned into it with the nickname SEO'Brien, thanks to my early work at Yahoo! and HP. But as I kept writing and sharing, my interests shifted toward startups, economic development, and innovation. Over time, the content I created followed that shift, and so did my audience. Now, instead of being known for search, I'm sought out for my work as a startup economist and my perspectives on public policy for entrepreneurs. That evolution wouldn't have happened without a personal brand that allowed me to grow in public.
Andres Vourakis: It's improved my confidence, my ability to communicate ideas, and even how effectively I do my work as a data scientist. I've spent so much time reflecting on what I do and why I do it, especially when creating content, that I now have way more clarity in how I approach problems and explain my thinking.
Your story is your safety net
Traditional job security is fading away fast. I can't count how many top performers I've seen with impressive résumés who are finding themselves out of work with little warning.
But what does exist, and is increasingly powerful, is the ability to position your skills and experience in a way that makes people want to work with you. That's what a personal brand does. It makes you visible, builds trust, and shows not just what you do, but how you think.
And that combination attracts new opportunities (job offers, clients, collaborators, even investors) often before roles are ever publicly posted.
Personal brands are the new, real job security—the safety net that ensures people know who you are, what you bring to the table, and why you're worth betting on. So start now. Earth Observation: A New Frontier of Resilience for European Entrepreneurs

Our fast-changing climate is hitting businesses hard. Every three weeks, a billion-dollar extreme weather event hits, wreaking havoc on global supply chains and denting business for large and small companies alike. It's a risk that European business owners can't continue to ignore as Europe is the fastest-warming continent. The devastating floods that hit Spain late last year also put a huge strain on its economy, costing the Spanish more than 10 billion euros. Over a year's worth of rain hit in eight hours, creating a nightmare situation for businesses and residents alike, whose properties were destroyed. Entrepreneurs need to take a proactive approach to managing challenges like these. There's a clear business case for being prepared before disaster strikes: According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, every $1 invested in climate resilience saves businesses $13. That's where Earth Observation (EO) data comes in. EO is the science of using sensors found in satellites and other devices to unveil vital information about our planet's surface, such as climate change patterns, land conditions, marine life, security, and more. Governments around the world have been heavily investing in EO given its potential to solve a wide range of problems that plague us here on Earth. The EU's Copernicus is a globally leading EO programme, set to generate up to €131 billion for the European economy. The European Space Agency (ESA) has also made headway in its 'Space for Earth' initiative. Just last month, it launched its groundbreaking satellite, Biomass, to uncover new data on how much carbon is stored in our forests and to 3D map them for the first time. Using Earth Observation data to stay ahead of the curve Yet it's not just governments and big organizations that stand to benefit from the capabilities of EO. Entrepreneurs and smaller businesses can also leverage it to answer real-world challenges, like risks to operations and assets. In fact, platforms like Copernicus aren't off-limits for smaller businesses: It's freely accessible for commercial use, combining information from satellite and in-situ (non-space) sources alike. These tools are made of high-quality imaging technology that analyse topography and weather patterns in unparalleled detail, capturing resolutions of 0.3m². What does this mean for entrepreneurs who access these data sources? They can tap into insights to take pre-emptive action for risk management, such as forecasting an otherwise unexpected flash of heavy rain which could cause flooding and destroy warehouses in that area. "It's interesting to see the ways that AI is helping to support the development of Europe's space industry and how it plays a key role in underpinning the convenience and security of our lives on Earth," says Daniel Smith, founder of AstroAgency, a consultancy for the space sector. "Earth Observation data, which comes from sensors on satellites, provides insights to support our economies through business sectors like energy, finance, agriculture, maritime, forestry, and more, as well as broader environmental monitoring efforts." Let's take a look at that in action. An entrepreneur with a small wine company, for instance, can tap into crop yield data at scale via EO data, allowing them to better forecast how much fertilizer and water they will need ahead of the planting season. The European wine industry, as well as the agriculture sectors, is being hit by continent-wide droughts; the use case of EO technology in these industries could be highly useful for business owners shuffling budgets, planning logistics, and trying to predict harvest yield. A founder operating in construction can benefit from EO data, too. A small business owner specialising in recycled concrete for buildings relies on rail to transport materials between regions or even countries. However, a key challenge is keeping a pulse on transport progress and being notified immediately if there are any delays or disruptions so they can act accordingly. Here's where EO insights can improve business operations with satellite-powered radar technology to get instant updates on rail freight. Tapping into those insights also benefits SMEs from a financial standpoint. It's no secret that European banks have some of the most stringent standards for risk management, including climate impact, when issuing funds and loans. Business owners need to prove that they're aligning activities with sustainability goals, but often struggle to uncover the insights needed to guide their steps in doing just that. According to a report from Morgan Stanley, 77% of investors are interested in sustainable investing. That's where companies like D-CAT come in, providing monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) services via satellites and machine learning (ML)-powered platforms. They're helping businesses understand where they can make more sustainable choices and show investors how they're slashing risks like climate impact. Be strategic with EO data use While EO data is not an absolute necessity for all entrepreneurs—especially those just starting out—the insights it yields can give a significant competitive advantage. With that in mind, entrepreneurs should be intentional in terms of investing in and prioritising the use of such information. That means having a blueprint in place to guide how these tools are implemented' here's how to do that. First, map out business goals and weaknesses in existing processes. This will enable entrepreneurs to gauge which challenges and opportunities EO data and relevant tools will answer. Next, it's critical to get digital infrastructures ready. Too often, businesses are quick to adopt technologies like AI tools without addressing existing gaps in their digital ecosystem, whether that's poor data management or poor interoperability between existing applications. There's nothing more frustrating than investing time, money, and energy into implementing a new technology, only for it to cause more friction than benefits. Assessing these aspects will also mean business owners can narrow down the EO data tools and solutions most relevant to their business needs—ensuring they bring tangible impact, whether that's fortifying resource availability, safeguarding facilities that are otherwise at risk of extreme weather events, or strengthening risk reporting for investors' assessments. An economic opportunity orbiting overhead EO data could pave the way for a $3.8 trillion economic opportunity, transforming how businesses propel growth while empowering their ESG efforts for stronger risk management. What once was a field viewed as exclusively for astronauts and astronomers is now a frontline for tackling key challenges like climate change head-on. Entrepreneurs who tap into this latest frontier aren't just going to be resilient to risk, but ahead of it, too.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — ADTRAN Holdings, Inc. (ADTN) on Monday reported a loss of $20.5 million in its second quarter. On a per-share basis, the Huntsville, Alabama-based company said it had a loss of 24 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to less than 1 cent on a per-share basis. The networking equipment maker posted revenue of $265.1 million in the period. For the current quarter ending in September, ADTRAN Holdings said it expects revenue in the range of $270 million to $280 million. ADTRAN Holdings shares have increased 14% since the beginning of the year. The stock has risen 56% in the last 12 months. _____

Does ESG Drive Consumer Confidence?

There is a meme swirling through LinkedIn where an online stock trader bemoans the current economy and asks if we should bring back pronouns because woke was 'load bearing' the bull market. Of course, it's a joke. Because most serious businesspeople believe the downturn in ESG/sustainability/purpose efforts is simply because companies can't afford to 'be good' in this market. All that social good stuff is subject to market forces, it can't actually cause them, surely? Perhaps it's time to unpick the complicated causality between sustainability and confidence. Consumer confidence is well understood: in times of consumer optimism, when people believe the future will be better, economies grow. Consumer spending rises, productivity surges, and governments are emboldened to make long-term investments. In short, when societies believe they are improving, that lives will get better, economies follow suit. Call it self-fulfilling prophesies or the economist preferred 'market reflexivity', the phenomenon has been long studied. Optimistic people spend money, get jobs and drive growth. That's why the current backlash against ESG, DEI, and sustainability might be more than an economic sideshow. Indeed, dumping all the 'social good stuff' just might be supremely reckless. Because dismantling the scaffolding of social progress risks collapsing the very confidence on which modern economies depend. The Confidence Feedback Loop Let's start with a basic but under appreciated truth: most economies are confidence machines. Consumers buy when they believe they'll have money tomorrow. Businesses invest when they believe their markets will grow. And governments undertake major investments when they believe society will reward them for it. Sustainability, ESG, and DEI initiatives do not merely respond to that confidence. They help generate it. Take the consumer. Across major economies, the rise of the sustainability zeitgeist coincided with a measurable uptick in what the OECD calls 'consumer future orientation' which is a proxy for optimism about personal and national economic prospects. A 2021 OECD report notes that people who identify with sustainability concerns are more likely to engage in future-oriented financial decisions, from household investment to lifestyle planning This is not accidental. When people see businesses and policymakers actively pursuing social and environmental progress, they are more likely to believe in their own future and thus spend, invest, and plan for it. Greenhush Is Anti-Happiness If sustainability builds consumer confidence, then hiding it does the opposite. So-called greenhushing, when companies underreport or obscure their sustainability activity for fear of backlash, is becoming a silent saboteur of consumer sentiment. What may seem like a prudent communications strategy is, in fact, a confidence trap. Consumers can't reward what they can't see. The trust premium that sustainability generates comes from transparency, not virtue concealed in spreadsheets. In Edelman's 2023 Brand Trust Report, 73% of global respondents said they want to know what companies are doing behind the scenes on social and environmental issues, and 64% say silence makes them suspicious. When firms retreat from visible commitments, they risk creating a vacuum filled by doubt. People begin to wonder whether companies are still investing in long-term value, or simply waiting out the cultural noise. Worse still, greenhushing undermines the shared norms that drive collective progress. Sustainability is a signal that society is moving forward. When leaders go quiet, others question whether progress is stalling altogether. Then there is our fatalism problem. In a landmark 2021 global survey, The Lancet Planetary Health asked ten thousand people aged 16–25 across ten countries about climate anxiety: 56% of them agreed that 'humanity is doomed'. Do marketers genuinely believe this level of ennui, fatalism and misery is good for business? Greenhushing not only undermines brand equity but also bust consumer confidence. The logic is simple: if the companies you trust won't speak confidently about the future, why should you spend confidently in the present? So, greenhushing may shield a firm from one week's headlines, but it erodes the trust that underpins future demand. In a values-driven marketplace, silence is forfeiture. Woke Markets Are Bull To be clear, ESG and DEI are imperfect. But their presence, even flawed, is better than their absence. Because together they generate an optimism dividend: the added economic value that comes from people believing they live in a society worth contributing to. Economists often talk about how £1 of government spending can generate £1.50 of economic activity, aka fiscal multipliers. Well, social and environmental optimism is the ultimate multiplier. One act of progress can spark ten acts of confidence, which in turn fuel hundreds of decisions that grow the economy. In a time when productivity is stagnant, investment is hesitant, and anxiety is high, we should protect and expand the drivers of collective confidence. Sustainability, DEI, and the wider social-good agenda are prerequisites for the consumer confidence that drives growth. It takes hope to turn a bear into a bull. And hope, as every economist should know, is the most powerful economic force we have.
