India and Maldives sign several MoUs during PM Modi's visit, agree on FTA Terms of Reference
"They discussed cooperation in the fields of development partnership, capacity building, health, infrastructure, digital economy, aquaculture, climate change and renewable energy. The two leaders called for closer collaboration to enhance peace, progress and prosperity of the Indian Ocean region," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) posted on X after the bilateral discussions.
The leaders also took stock of the progress in the implementation of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a 'Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership' adopted in 2024.
This is Prime Minister Modi's third visit to Maldives - he had visited the Indian Ocean archipelago in 2018 and 2019, earlier - and the first by a Head of State or Government to Maldives during the Presidency of Mohamed Muizzu which began in November 2023.
Both countries announced later that they have agreed on Terms of Reference of the India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and also signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoU), including in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture.
The two nations also signed an agreement for a Line of Credit (LoC) of INR 4,850 crores to Maldives besides an amendatory agreement on reducing annual debt repayment obligations of Maldives on Government of India-funded LoCs.
An MoU was also signed between the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Maldives Meteorological Services (MMS), Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
The two nations also signed a MoU on cooperation in the field of sharing successful digital solutions implemented at population scale for Digital Transformation between the Ministry of Electronics and IT of India and Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology of Maldives.
Both nations also signed an MoU on recognition of Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) by Maldives. Network-to-Network Agreement between India's NPCI International Payment Limited (NIPL) and Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) on UPI in Maldives was also signed during PM Modi's visit to Maldives.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome and guard of honour at the Republic Square in Male as he began his official engagements during a two-day State Visit to the country. Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu was also present on the occasion.
Children performed a dance to welcome PM Modi at the venue and the ceremonial welcome was followed by a meeting between the two leaders.
In a special gesture, President Muizzu welcomed PM Modi at the airport in Male as he arrived from the United Kingdom. Maldives Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister and Minister of Homeland Security were also present at the airport to welcome PM Modi.
PM Modi said that he is "deeply touched" by Muizzu's gesture of coming to the airport to receive him. He expressed confidence that the ties between two nations will scale new heights of progress in the coming times.
"Landed in Male. Deeply touched by the gesture of President Muizzu to come to the airport to welcome me. I am confident that India-Maldives friendship will scale new heights of progress in the times to come," PM Modi posted on X.
PM Modi will participate in the country's 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour on Saturday. This is his third visit to the Maldives and notably the first by any head of state or government since Muizzu assumed office.

Baloch leader Mir Yar Baloch slams Trump's statement on Pakistan oil, says it belongs to ‘Republic of Balochistan'
Quetta, July 31 (UNI) Dismissing US President Donald Trump's statement about helping Pakistan tap its big reserves of oil in Balochistan province, Mir Yar Baloch, one of the most prominent Baloch voices, said that the "oil belongs to Balochistan, and not Pakistan". Taking to X, he posted a lengthy message following Trump's message where he had earlier said that Washington had conducted a deal with Islamabad under which 'Pakistan and the United States will work on developing their Oil reserves.' Disparaging the US President's statement, Baloch wrote that Trump had been 'gravely misled by the Pakistani military leadership, particularly General Asim Munir, and by their diplomatic channels regarding the true geography and ownership of these critical resources.' He added: 'These untapped reserves of oil, natural gas, copper, lithium, uranium, and rare earth minerals are not located within the territories of Punjab which is the actual Pakistan. 'They belong to the Republic of Balochistan, a historically sovereign nation currently under illegal occupation by Pakistan. The claim that these resources belong to Pakistan is not only false, it is a deliberate attempt to misappropriate Balochistan's wealth for political and financial gain.' He further emphasised that should a deal go through, they would by no means benefit the people of the province, but rather all that money would be funnelled by the Pakistani military and its intelligence wing – the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) – to enhance their operation capabilities in expanding their 'global terror network,' and for strengthening "anti-India and anti-Israel jihadist proxies", destabilising the region. Stating that protecting the Baloch people is a matter of global security, he remarked 'There is no doubt: Balochistan is not for sale. We will not permit Pakistan, China, or any other foreign power to exploit our land or its resources without the explicit consent of the Baloch people. Our sovereignty is non-negotiable, and our struggle for rightful ownership and independence continues with dignity and resilience.' Mir Yar Baloch further called on the US and the international community to recognise the sovereignty of the Baloch people, and aid in their independence.

TMC's ‘vote chori' label turns INDIA bloc's war cry in fight against SIR
1 2 Kolkata: TMC on Thursday decided to step up its opposition to the proposed special intensive revision of voter rolls that the party believes will lead to large-scale deletion of voters. Along with its INDIA bloc partners, TMC will agitate at Nirvachan Sadan mid-next week. TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will convene a virtual meeting of all TMC netas on Aug 8 to chart the road ahead. Deciding to call it "vote chori" at a meeting attended by 20 MPs, INDIA bloc on Thursday resolved to keep its collective focus on SIR during the remainder part of the monsoon session. After the discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack, it is set to demand one on SIR, a move that puts the functioning of Parliament in the coming weeks under a cloud. Interestingly, the opposition decided to adopt the TMC's appellation of SIR, calling it "vote chori". It was felt SIR is too esoteric for the common man to grasp its political significance. A TMC functionary said: "INDIA parties will walk to the EC in protest and hold a gherao. It was agreed upon, and the date would be next Wednesday or Thursday. One more suggestion was discussed in acknowledgment of what this actually means to people who are in villages and everywhere else. All parties agreed to start the slogans in regional languages." B'deshi armed group under scanner of Mizoram Police
1 2 3 4 Aizawl: Senior police officials in Mizoram are reportedly taking a serious view of the alleged illegal activities of the Parbottya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), a Bangladeshi armed group led by Jyotirindra Bodhipriyo Larma alias Santu Larma, in both Mizoram and Tripura. A senior police official said appropriate action will be taken against the Bangladesh-based Chakma outfit if its cadres are found venturing into Mizoram and indulging in illegal activities, as they have reportedly done in the past. Hundreds of people, both tribals and non-tribals, on Wednesday protested at Nutan Bazaar in South Tripura, submitting a memorandum to their CM Manik Saha, demanding expulsion of members of the Bangladeshi armed group from India. According to the memorandum, the PCJSS (Santu faction) has been accused of spoiling the lives of youths in the northeast through drug trafficking, using India as a shelter after committing murders in Bangladesh, and also carrying out anti-India activities from Bangladesh. This includes the alleged formation of the Tripura United National Front (TUNF) and sheltering them in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs) of Bangladesh. In India, members of the PCJSS (Santu) group are allegedly involved in trafficking of arms, drugs (including Yaba tablets), Burmese cigarettes and cows, which protestors claim is "destroying the youths of Tripura and Mizoram." The memorandum detailed recent seizures linked to the outfit's activities. Last year on Dec 30, Tripura Police reportedly seized 2,720 Burmese cigarette packets worth Rs 9 lakh from Raishyabari in Dhalai district. Recently, on June 19, the Assam Rifles reportedly seized drugs worth Rs 10 crore from Lunglei town in Mizoram. Furthermore, on Feb 12, Mizoram Police reportedly confiscated a significant cache of weapons. On June 4, Tripura Police arrested 13 cadres of the group and subsequently deported them to Bangladesh. The protestors alleged that the PCJSS (Santu) has evolved into a "transnational trafficking gang."
