US imposes visa sanctions on Palestinian Authority officials and PLO members

The US imposed sanctions on Palestinian Authority officials and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization on Thursday, accusing them of undermining peace efforts with Israel even as other Western powers moved toward recognition of Palestinian statehood. The US State Department said it would deny visas for travel to the United States by those it was targeting, although it did not name any specific individuals. 'It is in our national security interests to impose consequences and hold the PLO and PA accountable for not complying with their commitments and undermining the prospects for peace,' the State Department said in a statement. The State Department said the two Palestinian organisations had 'taken actions to internationalise' their conflict with Israel, including through the International Criminal Court, and said both had continued 'to support terrorism'. The PA and PLO serve as representatives for the Palestinian people and have long pushed for recognition of a Palestinian state by international organisations and foreign nations. The two groups had no immediate comment on the US move. 01:29 Dozens of Palestinians killed while seeking aid in Gaza as US envoy heads to Israel for talks Dozens of Palestinians killed while seeking aid in Gaza as US envoy heads to Israel for talks There are signs of a growing diplomatic divide over Palestinian statehood between Washington and three fellow Group of Seven (G7) allies.

US and allies accuse Iran of covert overseas ‘kill, kidnap' policy

The US and more than a dozen of its allies on Thursday accused Iran of attempting to kill or kidnap people in Western countries, including dissidents, journalists and officials. 'We are united in our opposition to the attempts of Iranian intelligence services to kill, kidnap and harass people in Europe and North America in clear violation of our sovereignty,' the countries said in a joint statement. The governments – of Albania, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the US – called on the Iranian authorities to immediately stop such illegal activities. 'These services are increasingly collaborating with international criminal organisations to target journalists, dissidents, Jewish citizens, and current and former officials in Europe and North America. This is unacceptable,' the statement said. Iran's embassy in London did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 01:47 Brics leaders condemn strikes on Iran and tariffs but avoid direct mention of US, Israel Brics leaders condemn strikes on Iran and tariffs but avoid direct mention of US, Israel Earlier in July it dismissed a report by UK lawmakers which said Tehran posed a significant and wide-ranging threat to Britain as unfounded, defamatory and dangerous.

Israel isolated diplomatically over Gaza: Germany

Israel isolated diplomatically over Gaza: Germany Germany's foreign minister says Gaza's two-million-plus inhabitants now face an unfolding famine, demanding that Israel enable more aid into the territory. Photo: Reuters Germany's foreign minister said on Thursday that Israel was increasingly isolated diplomatically over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the push by some countries to recognise a Palestinian state. Johann Wadephul said in a statement before heading to Israel that the recent UN conference on a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which was boycotted by the US and Israel, showed that "Israel is finding itself increasingly in the minority". Germany is one of Israel's staunchest diplomatic allies but Wadephul noted that "in view of the open threats of annexation by some in the Israeli government, a growing number of European countries are ready to recognise a state of Palestine without previous negotiations". Last week more than 70 Israeli lawmakers, including some in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing coalition, passed a motion urging the government to impose sovereignty over the occupied West Bank. Wadephul repeated Berlin's position that "the recognition of a Palestinian state should come at the end of the process" of negotiations. He did however sharpen his tone slightly by insisting that "this process must begin now" and that "Germany will also be forced to react to unilateral moves". On Gaza, whose two-million-plus inhabitants now face an unfolding famine, Wadephul demanded that Israel enable more aid into the territory "immediately, comprehensively and in a lasting way" to alleviate the "dramatic" situation there. Wadephul is expected to meet his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar and President Isaac Herzog on the trip to Israel, as well as Netanyahu. (AFP)
