Bombay high court seeks police reply after five mosques file petition against action on loudspeakers

Time of India16 hours ago
Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Tuesday issued notice to the state and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board on a petition filed by five mosques against police crackdown on loudspeakers.
Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Milind Sathaye directed that the police authorities file a reply along with relevant records and posted the next hearing for July 9. Senior advocate Yusuf Muchhala and advocate Mubin Solkar, representing the petitioners, argued that action was being taken only against mosques.
The petitions, filed through authorised representatives, expressed concern that worshippers were being affected by the police, who were allegedly targeting masjids, dargahs, and other places of worship within the Muslim community across Mumbai.
Notices regarding alleged violations of the Noise Pollution Rules, 2000, were issued without providing specifics of the date and time of the alleged violations or the measurement of decibels at the time.

These notices were used as a basis for follow-up actions, such as imposing arbitrary fines, terminating existing licences, refusing to renew licences, and forcibly seizing or removing loudspeakers. The petition claimed that the police department was acting under the influence of vested political interests by issuing such arbitrary notices.

The petition stated that the azaan is an important part of Islam and that the use of loudspeakers to call people for prayer is a necessity in Mumbai. It argued that this practice cannot be curtailed when performed within the prescribed limits of the rules, as it would violate the fundamental rights of Muslims.
The petition urged the HC to set aside the notices and restrain the police authorities from taking coercive action against the petitioners and their trustees, managers, or mutawalli, including the removal of loudspeakers without following the procedure prescribed by law.

Congress slams Modi govt over Pakistan's UNSC presidency, calls it 'diplomatic setback'

The Congress on Wednesday slammed the PM Modi-led government for allegedly failing to prevent Pakistan from assuming key positions in the United Nations, calling it a major diplomatic setback for India. Pakistan on Tuesday said that it assumed the Presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of July. The presidency of the Security Council - the world body's power centre - is part of Pakistan's two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, which began in January 2025. In addition, Pakistan will chair the Taliban Sanctions Committee and serve as vice-chair of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy the Dip: Top 5 Dividend Stocks with Growth Potential Seeking Alpha Read Now Undo Speaking to reporters here, Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "the terror state of Pakistan has now been made the global security broker. The devil is now in the chair." Pakistan, "a terror state with a proven record of harbouring terrorists, promoting terrorism, and exporting terror to India" was being elevated to global leadership positions, even as India continues to face terror attacks sponsored by it, he said. Live Events "This happened just weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack , which was Pakistan-sponsored," Surjewala alleged, questioning the Modi government 's "silence and inaction". He claimed Pakistan's elevation came "despite all the bravado on foreign policy" displayed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who, he alleged, had failed to rally global support to prevent this outcome. Citing a specific instance, Surjewala pointed out that Pakistan assumed the vice-chair of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee on June 4, 2025, despite its repeated violations of international resolutions on terrorism. "What are the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, and India's Permanent Representative to the UN doing," he asked. He also criticised the government for failing to protest when Pakistan, allegedly backed by China , blocked India's proposal to designate Abdul Rauf, a known anti-India terrorist, as a global terrorist in the same Counter-Terrorism Committee . "The same Pakistan becomes vice-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee, and the Government of India raises no objection," Surjewala claimed. He also lamented the 'decline' of India's traditional diplomatic ties. "Our old and trusted allies, relationships built by the Congress across the world, in Asia, and our neighbourhood have been alienated. Today, we are isolated. Even smaller nations like the Maldives, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka no longer stand with us." "Diplomacy requires more than photo-ops and optics," he said.

'Will be next job': Trump proposes deporting US citizens with criminal offenses; says will find out legality

US President Donald Trump speaks during a roundtable at "Alligator Alcatraz" (Image credits: AP) US President Donald Trump on Tuesday floated the idea of deporting US citizens who commit crimes, a proposal that legal experts say could violate the Constitution. During a visit to a migrant detention center in the Florida Everglades, Trump claimed that some immigrants who are now US citizens have committed serious offenses. "They're not new to our country. They're old to our country. Many of them were born in our country. I think we ought to get them the hell out of here, too, if you want to know the truth," Trump told reporters, according to ABC News. "So maybe that will be the next job." Trump admitted he was unsure of the legal basis for his proposal. "We'll have to find that out legally. I'm just saying if we had the legal right to do it, I would do it in a heartbeat," he added. "I don't know if we do or not, we're looking at that right now." The comments come just weeks after assistant attorney general Brett Shumate, a Trump appointee, issued a memo encouraging US attorneys to pursue denaturalisation cases that align with the administration's policy goals. The memo listed individuals involved in crimes such as torture, war crimes, human trafficking and human rights violations as key targets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Legal experts have pushed back, warning that deporting natural-born or naturalised citizens based solely on criminal activity could breach constitutional protections, particularly the Eighth Amendment, which bans cruel and unusual punishment, reported ABC News. Amanda Frost, a law professor at the University of Virginia, told ABC News that naturalised citizens can only be stripped of their status in specific cases, such as if they committed fraud during the naturalization process or engaged in acts like treason. 'An unrelated crime could not be the basis for denaturalising and deporting somebody," said Frost. Trump visited the 'Alligator Alcatraz' migrant detention center in Florida. While critics have described the facility as 'inhumane' due to the administration's tough immigration policies, the president leaned into the controversy during the center's official opening.

Elon Musk back to 'crediting' Donald Trump, says he has successfully resolved several ...

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has publicly endorsed US President Donald Trump's claims of progress toward a Gaza ceasefire . He called out Trump's role in resolving global conflicts in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Reacting to a post by Trump on Truth Social , Musk wrote: 'Credit where credit is due. @realDonaldTrump has successfully resolved several serious conflicts around the world.' The post's timing coincides with a brewing feud between Trump and Musk over EV subsidies. While Musk criticized the Trump administration's 'One Big Beautiful Bill', Trump said the tech billionaire 'may have to close shop and return back to South Africa'. What Trump wrote on Truth Social In a post on Truth Social, the US President wrote: 'My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the nècessary conditions to finalize the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War. The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring Peace, will deliver this final proposal. I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE. Thank you for your attention to this matter!' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo Elon Musk-Donald Trump renewed tension As mentioned above, tensions between the two have escalated after Musk said that if the 'One Big, Beautiful Bill' is passed in the Senate, he will immediately move forward with launching a new political party called the 'America Party.' Trump hit back with 'deport Elon Musk' remarks, accusing Elon Musk of benefiting more from government subsidies than any individual in US history. He argued that without this taxpayer-funded support, Musk would be unable to continue manufacturing electric cars, launching rockets, or operating satellite services. Trump wrote, 'Our Country would save a FORTUNE', adding 'Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!'. Responding to Trump, Musk wrote on X: 'So tempting to escalate this. So, so tempting. But I will refrain for now'. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now
