Shreyas Iyer would have never made India Test squad in England, says Aakash Chopra: ‘Even Sarfaraz, Jurel are sitting out'
Despite his impressive run on the domestic circuit and India's ODI set-up this year, Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer would not have made the Test squad in England in any scenario, said former India opener Aakash Chopra.
There were questions raised over Iyer's exclusion from India's extensive 18-member squad announced in May, and the situation sparked more questions about the 30-year-old's red-ball future at the international level. Iyer was in blistering form in the IPL, leading Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish with his best season with the bat, scoring 604 runs at a 50-plus average and a staggering 175.07 strike rate with 39 sixes. Iyer also had a productive Ranji Trophy season besides leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win in December 2024.
In nine First Class matches, including an Irani Cup triumph, Iyer aggregated 699 runs with two centuries and three fifties. However, that would not be enough to make a comeback to the Test squad for Iyer, who last represented India during the 2024 home series against England. Chopra noted how even Iyer's Mumbai teammate Sarfaraz Khan who is ahead in the pecking order missed out on a berth in England, insisting that the former must patiently wait for his second wind.
Save for the returning Karun Nair, debutant Sai Sudharsan and a wobbly lower-order, India's front-line batters all came to the fore during the Headingley Test. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant (2), KL Rahul, skipper Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal all struck centuries, making it the first time India tallied five centuries in a Test.
'There is no problem with the batting as such. But he has to wait for his chances; he won't get a chance straightaway right now. He would've never made it to the squad for the England tour. The remaining ones also haven't had their chance,' Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
'If you think about it, Karun Nair has played just now. Sarfaraz Khan is not being given the chances. Dhruv Jurel is sitting outside. The players who are already there, if they aren't only getting the chances, then how can Shreyas Iyer get a look in?' he added.
'I know he had a good first-class season. He had a good IPL, took Punjab Kings to the final. He did well in white-ball cricket, but his time will come. He will have to wait just a little bit,' said Chopra.
Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had reasoned that there was no room currently for Iyer in the scheme of things despite his solid form at the domestic level.
'Yes, Shreyas Iyer has played well in domestic cricket, but at the moment, there is no room for him on the Test Team,' he said while speaking to reporters in Mumbai when announcing the Test squad in late May.

Rest him in lesser important T20 and ODI series and get him ready for the big Test series against Australia, England, and India away from home... New Zealand to a certain extent, depending on the rankings at that time," he explained. The former Proteas captain even threw the word 'mismanagement' by the Indian team as he questioned what led to the team taking such a call. "So, I don't know if it was mismanagement or perhaps because he recently got back from injury, sort of saw the IPL as the warmup phase," he said. "Maybe, went to the surgeon, who let him know, 'You can't play the five Test matches.' So, I mean you got to respect that, and at the end of the day, it's up to Team India to sort of manage him well," he added. "It doesn't get bigger than that, guys, except for maybe the WTC final."

"Some of my friends were part of the film industry, and I started seeing a lot of movies and accompanying them to shoots to observe what was happening. I started talking to the guys, and I came to know that they are shooting for a movie called Jeeva in many cricket grounds. I went there with the intention of becoming an Assistant Director, but that didn't work out. I couldn't even make a proper pitch. Then one of the ADs asked me if I played cricket. I said, 'Only tennis-ball cricket.' So then I got to act in this movie, where I was signed as a junior artist with a salary of INR 600 per day. And that was pretty helpful at that time," he said. Ashwin interrupted him to ask his current daily allowance as a cricketer, and the India star shockingly revealed a 42x pay gap. "I get 300 USD (INR 25652.78)," he said, leaving Ashwin smiling. Varun further revealed that his love for movies even led him to direct a few short films, which, albeit, are no longer available for streaming on YouTube, while playing tennis-ball cricket on weekends. His speeding car crashed into a divider and caught fire before Pant was taken to the hospital in a serious condition by two onlookers. He was initially admitted to Dehradun and had to be airlifted to Mumbai, where Pardiwala did his surgeries. Recalling the incident, Pant's surgeon said that the Indian-wicketkeeper was lucky to be alive and he is a much more mature human being now. "He recognises the fact that he was extremely lucky to be alive. He's so motivated as a cricketer. If you knew the Rishabh before this happened, he's a much more mature human being," said Pardiwala. "He's very philosophical now. He appreciates life and everything that goes around it. That typically happens to anyone who's faced death in the face. Someone who's had a near-death experience often gets life into perspective," he added. The India wicketkeeper-batter did extensive rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy and recovered quicker than anticipated. He returned to competitive cricket with the 2024 Indian Premier League season.
