Wolves Women vow to apply for WSL2 licence after promotion push was ‘all for nothing'
Wolves went into last month's final day of the Women's Premier Division North campaign with hopes of winning promotion to the Women's Championship, which has been renamed Women's Super League 2.
A 6-0 win against Liverpool Feds was not enough to secure promotion as other results went against them and they finished three points behind champions Nottingham Forest.
The Wolves players were left furious after only being told of the club's decision not to apply for a second-tier licence in a meeting after their final match.
Following a backlash from players, Shi said in a statement on Monday: "Wolves Women remains a vital part of our football family and we are committed to building a sustainable, competitive future for the team.
"Moving forward, we will apply for the tier two licence on an annual basis in line with our sporting achievements and ensure that every on-pitch achievement is supported by the right procedures and documentation.
'We believe Wolves Women can continue to progress - and that belief will be backed by improved structure, support, communication and leadership. That's what we are committing to putting in place.'
None of Wolves' players are on full-time contracts, while the licence criteria to compete in the second tier encourages increased investment in the women's team.
The players did not hold back in their reaction to finding out that, had they won promotion last season, they would have been denied a place in Women's Super League 2.
Midfielder Beth Merrick said in a statement on X: "Imagine fighting for promotion all season to find out our Championship bid was never submitted.
"As a group we are absolutely devastated to finish the season this way and believe it speaks volumes about the club's ambitions for the women's team."
Team-mate Lily Simkin added on X: "As a group of staff and players we have been fighting all season and still achieved what some people at the club thought was impossible.

Yorkshire have boosted their survival hopes in the Division One of the Rothesay County Championship with an innings-and-128-run thrashing of Sussex. Hampshire kept chipping away, with highly-rated quicks Sonny Baker and Eddie Jack each claiming three wickets, but hands were shaken with Worcestershire on 303 for eight after 52.5 overs. Nottinghamshire sit nine points adrift of leaders Surrey after being held to a draw by Somerset at Trent Bridge. With a 106-run first-innings lead in a high-scoring match, Nottinghamshire needed to make inroads into Somerset's batting. But while Calvin Harrison took three wickets, Somerset getting to 200 for five meant a stalemate was agreed. Ed Barnard went from an overnight 90 to 108 for Warwickshire, but mid-afternoon rain meant their match at Essex petered out to a draw. In Division Two, Glamorgan remain on course for promotion after claiming their first win at Emirates Old Trafford since 1993. Any hopes of Lancashire reeling in 473 from an overnight 226 for five were soon extinguished despite Marcus Harris' 61 as the Red Rose were all out for 318. James Milner to wear number 20 at Brighton in memory of Diogo Jota
James Milner will wear the number 20 shirt at Brighton this season in memory of the late Diogo Jota, describing his former Liverpool team-mate as a 'great friend'. The Portuguese forward died aged 28 last month in a car crash, alongside his brother Andre Silva, just weeks after helping Liverpool clinch Premier League title glory. Liverpool have retired the number 20 jersey worn by Jota in his five seasons at Anfield, three of them alongside Milner before the veteran England midfielder moved to Brighton in the summer of 2023. With Carlos Baleba opting to have 17 on his back ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and vacating 20, Milner, who has been Brighton's number six, has swooped in to pay a touching tribute to Jota. 'Once I heard Carlos was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and pay tribute to Diogo Jota,' Milner said on the club's X channel. 'He was an amazing player who I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. 'It will be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League this year.' Milner – whose contract was extended by Brighton in June for another season, which will take him past his 40th birthday – was among a number of Jota's former team-mates who attended his funeral in July. Sevilla target out-of-favour Newcastle star on loan - as player seeks exit just a year after moving to St James' Park for £20m
Newcastle United goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos is wanted by Spanish side Sevilla.
