31 Workers Rescued After Tunnel Collapse in Los Angeles; No Injuries Reported

Thirty-one workers were safely rescued after a tunnel partially collapsed in Wilmington, Los Angeles, on Wednesday night. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded quickly to the emergency inside the Los Angeles Effluent Outfall Tunnel—part of the $630.5 million Clearwater Project.
The collapse was reported around 8 p.m. near South Figueroa Street and Q Street. The workers were deep underground, nearly 6 miles inside the tunnel and about 450 feet below the surface. Emergency responders, including LAFD's Urban Search and Rescue teams, were sent in to help.
The collapse happened as a tunnel boring machine was in operation. A large amount of dirt, estimated at over 15 feet high, blocked part of the tunnel. Workers had to climb over this soil mound to reach safety.
L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn confirmed all workers were rescued and had no visible injuries. Mayor Karen Bass praised the response, saying, "Thank you to our brave first responders. You are L.A.'s true heroes."
According to LAFD Chief Villanueva, "A structural failure occurred 5 to 6 miles inside the tunnel. Workers made their way through debris before our teams assisted them out."
The Clearwater Tunnel is a 7-mile-long, 18-foot-wide pipe meant to carry treated wastewater from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant to the ocean. The tunnel is being built by Flatiron Dragados and replaces older systems from 1937 and 1958.
Rescue teams faced tough conditions due to the tunnel's depth and distance from the entry point. Officials say the response was a major success, preventing a potential tragedy.

50 Cent reignites Sean ‘Diddy' Combs feud with AI video mocking rapper's baby oil obsession

50 Cent has reignited his long-running feud with Sean 'Diddy' Combs by posting an AI-generated video mocking the disgraced rap mogul's obsession with baby oil. The 49-year-old rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, shared the video over the weekend on Instagram as Combs, 55, awaits sentencing from a jail cell in New York following his trial, which saw him accused of federal offences including sex trafficking. 50 said alongside his social media clip: 'I didn't know Diddy walked in the Michael Amiri show, when did he make Bond!' The footage posted by the rapper was credited to the Instagram account @Geisha305 and depicted Combs strutting down a fashion runway in a pink dress emblazoned with the Johnson and Johnson baby oil logo. The video is set to the track Baby Oil Freak Off Party by Jody2Good, a song released in 2023 after Diddy's arrest. They were references to evidence which emerged during Combs' trial, which showed how he hoarded hundreds of bottles of baby oil, which were used in his now infamous 'Freak Off' sex parties. Combs was acquitted of the most serious allegations against him — sex trafficking and racketeering — but was found guilty of two lesser charges relating to transportation to engage in prostitution. He is currently in custody in Brooklyn awaiting sentencing on 3 October. 50's caption quickly drew attention, prompting designer Michael Amiri, 47, to comment: 'C'mon 50, don't include me in this.' The post comes after another viral incident involving content creator Armon Wiggins, 38, who faced backlash for dancing shirtless and being sprayed with baby oil outside the courthouse following the verdict in Combs' trial. In an interview with The Trial of Diddy podcast, hosted by journalist Kayla Brantley for the Daily Mail, Armon said: 'In reporting the case, I was trying to take a very eerie, grim situation and turn it into something digestible for people. I wasn't making light of the victims or poking fun at them.' He added: 'We had been there at the trial from start to finish – we were tired and wanted to celebrate making it to the end. I was just vibing with another YouTuber, to be honest with you, and before I knew it, there was a crowd of people with television cameras and lights that circled around me.' Armon denied profiting from the clip, saying: 'I got a lot of hate and lost followers. I said to myself afterwards: I've got to grow up and learn to control the narrative because it was irresponsible.' He continued: 'Even if my fans knew the intent behind it, that doesn't matter when you have 150 cameras out there in a heightened situation. You've got to be smarter than that.' Reflecting on the media's portrayal of his actions, Armon said: 'The amount of baby oil involved in the trial became ridiculous. You can't even say baby oil now without laughing. Really, I was making fun of Diddy – he came across as crazy. How many bottles of baby oil does one person need?'

Passengers jump for their lives as fire engulfs Indonesian ferry

At least five people have died after a fire broke out on a ferry in Indonesia. Some 200 passengers were rescued from the water after the KMII Barcelona ship caught fire off the coast of Sulawesi Island at around 1.30pm local time on Sunday. A pregnant woman was among those killed, the country's coast guard said. Footage of the blaze showed smoke pouring out of the vessel, while coastguard boats and fishermen waited to rescue passengers still on board. In another video, Abdul Rahmad Agu, a survivor of the incident, showed himself clinging onto a small child in the sea while other passengers wearing lifejackets jumped from the burning ship into the water. In the background, it is clear that many of the surviving passengers are distressed as they await help. Vice-Adm Denih Hendrata, the commander of the Indonesian Fleet Command, said three navy ships had been deployed to aid rescue efforts, and 284 passengers and crew members had been evacuated so far. The ferry was travelling from the Talaud Islands to Manado City and was about an hour away from the resort town of Likupang when it caught fire. Vice-Adm Hendrata said the navy was 'still focusing on evacuation efforts' and that the cause of the fire was being investigated. The rescue operation was aided by local fishermen and residents, who helped evacuate the survivors to nearby islands. George Leo Mercy Randang, the head of the Manado search and rescue agency, told AFP: 'We are prioritising rescue before nightfall.' Those injured were taken to the nearest health facility, according to Bakamla, Indonesia's Maritime Security Agency. The total number of passengers and crew members on the ferry is not known, and there are no immediate reports of injuries. Ferries are a common way to travel in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands. Marine accidents are frequent, attributed to poor safety standards and bad weather. Last month, at least 19 people were killed and 16 people are missing after a ferry sank off Bali, the Indonesian resort island. A two-week search operation involved over 1,000 rescuers, three navy ships and 15 boats. In 2018, over 150 people died when a ferry sank in a lake on Sumatra Island. Solve the daily Crossword
