Pune on My Plate: here are 3 city spots that bring the Korean hype to the table

Indian Express11-07-2025
Whether you are a K-pop fan, a K-drama binge-watcher, or just someone who loves good food, Pune's newest Korean cafés and restaurants are serving up everything from spicy tteokbokki to Instagram-worthy Dalgona coffee. Think croffles, Soju cocktails, bubble teas, and Seoul-style street food, all in vibrant, feel-good spaces. Here are three Korean spots in Pune that are bringing the K-hype to the table:
If you have ever dreamed of wandering through Seoul's neon-lit streets with bubble tea in one hand and fried chicken in the other, Ba Da Bom in Pune might be your new favourite hangout. Opened in November 2024, this all-day café and bar blends bold Korean flavours with a playful, social vibe.
'We wanted to bring something truly Korean to Pune, beyond just traditional food,' says Siri Marella, restaurant manager at Ba Da Bom.
The menu features Korean favourites like kimchi mandu, dak-galbi, hotteok, silken steamed tofu, and menbosha. Rice bowls such as bibimbap, bulgogi deopbap, kimchi rice, and shroom rice add to the comfort food appeal. Their fried chicken comes in flavour-packed options like bburinkle and yangnyeom.
The name Ba Da Bom, Marella says, reflects the spirit of the place. 'It roughly translates to excess and abundance.' She adds, 'Our goal was to recreate the lively energy of Korea's streets where people unwind after work over food, drinks, and maybe even a game of Tekken.'
By day, the café serves up specialty coffee, flavoured milks, and popular treats like croffles (croissant-waffles) and mascarpone toast. At night, it transforms into a buzzing bar offering Korean-inspired cocktails and Soju.
Marella says, 'Our space changes with the time of day. In the morning, it is calm and cosy with coffee and bakes, but by evening, it transforms into a vibrant bar. That rhythm keeps things exciting.'
She continues, 'Our Soju menu and signature cocktails are inspired by Korean flavours, but designed for the Pune crowd. It is where authenticity meets experimentation.'
Customer favourites include crispy Korean fried chicken, Bibimbap, kimchi rice and a variety of matcha and bubble teas. While not strictly traditional, the food is rooted in authentic recipes with thoughtful local touches.
Speaking about the response of the Pune crowd, Marella says, 'It has been amazing. We have become a neighbourhood spot for those who love Korean culture or are simply curious.'
The food here is priced between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.
Started by Indraja and Srihari Khaladkar as a cloud kitchen amid the pandemic in 2020, Iya's Korean Kitchen became a full-time restaurant in 2022. Indraja, whose pet name is Iya, says the place is now known for its authentic flavours, creative fusion, and homestyle Korean meals. 'About 25 to 30 per cent of our ingredients are directly sourced from Korea, but staples like kimchi and tteokbokki are made in-house,' she says.
The menu reflects a balance between authenticity and innovation, from Korean ketchup-style gochujang blended with Indian hot and sweet sauces to vegetarian, Jain, and even vegan versions of classic Korean meals.
Iya's Korean Kitchen serves Korean favourites like dolsot bibimbap, kimchi fried rice, tteokbokki, rabokki, japchae, shin ramyun, and jjajangmyeon. Set meals like hanjeongsik come with soup, sticky rice, and classic banchan such as egg rolls, pickled radish, and soy-braised eggs, staples of Korean dining.
'We do not copy blindly. We tweak thoughtfully. Customer curiosity has also helped shape the menu. Adaptability is our strength,' Indraja adds, summing up the kitchen's spirit of evolving without losing its essence.
'The price range is very affordable at around Rs 500 per person,' she says.
Café Dalgona, launched in July 2023, has become a favourite among those craving authentic Korean flavours in a calm, cosy setting. With nearly a decade of experience in Korean cuisine, founder Joseph Chhetry set out to create a casual dining space where guests could enjoy both coffee and hearty meals.
'We wanted a place where people could relax with a pastry or have a full dinner, all under one roof. Authenticity and quality at affordable prices are what we stand for,' says Benjamin, the manager at Café Dalgona. 'The focus has always been on serving authentic food made with premium ingredients at affordable prices.'
Menu highlights at Café Dalgona include tteokbokki, kimchi jjigae, bulgogi, Korean soy sauce soup, pork deopbap, Korean fried chicken, Dalgona coffee, iced teas, and twisted donuts.
The name Dalgona was chosen for its familiarity and charm, inspired by the popular coffee and its playful sound. Customer favourites include tteokbokki, kimchi jjigae, Korean fried chicken, and the signature Dalgona coffee.
Benjamin says, 'We do not change our recipes to suit local tastes. Many of our guests are native Koreans, and staying true to the food matters.'
As Korean culture gains popularity in India, Café Dalgona offers comfort, flavour, and community all within an affordable range of Rs 500-900.

Why is justice for Zhao Lusi trending again? Hidden Love star accuses her agency of exploitation; reveals 'severe' anxiety battle

Chinese actress Zhao Lusi, known for her role in the hit C-drama Hidden Love, has once again spoken out against her management, accusing the company of financial manipulation while she continues to battle severe depression and anxiety. In a recent statement, Zhao revealed that since being diagnosed in December last year, her management has extorted over 2 million yuan from her under the guise of contractual obligations. She also claimed the company has refused to grant her full control over her own studio. For those unfamiliar, Zhao shocked fans last year when she was rushed to the hospital during a drama shoot, reportedly due to extreme mental stress. Since then, she has been open about her ongoing struggle with mental health. With these new allegations of fraud and exploitation, fans have rallied behind her once more, prompting 'Justice for Zhao Lusi' to trend again across Chinese social media platforms. Zhao Lusi exposes her company and alleges financial fraud and mental distress On August 2, Zhao Lusi posted an emotional update on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, publicly accusing her management company, Galaxy Kuyu Media (KU), of financial exploitation and neglecting her mental and physical well-being. The Hidden Love star, who has been open about her struggles with depression and anxiety, said she could no longer stay silent after months of failed attempts at negotiation. Mental health sidelined Zhao revealed that her ongoing health issues were met with empty promises rather than real support. After being diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety in December last year, she was forced to cancel brand deals and reduce her filming schedule. According to Zhao, Galaxy Kuyu had initially claimed they would take responsibility for the sudden changes in her workload, but in the end, she was the one left to bear the financial consequences. 'Due to a sudden illness, I was forced to cancel some brand endorsements and reduce my filming workload. They kept saying they would take responsibility… but I had to pay the price.' Zhao added that despite months of communication, the company has refused to return operational control of her personal studio, which she says has now disbanded. Most of her original team members have left. Accusations of exploitation and manipulation In her post, Zhao accused Galaxy Kuyu Media of tricking her studio's financial officer into signing off on a falsified earnings report. She claimed that 2.05 million yuan had already been taken from her studio without proper negotiation, under a long-term financial agreement she 'stupidly' signed two years ago. 'I've waited until now and still haven't received any communication. Two years ago, I stupidly renewed my contract, and now there's a four-year financial agreement in place. So they're not in a hurry—and I'm the only one left suffering.' She further alleged that when she tried to terminate the contract, the company used emotional manipulation, even telling her she might be blacklisted if she spoke out. 'They told me I might be blacklisted and should stay quiet for now… Is that what they call a solution?' Zhao Lusi's message to others Despite the risk of backlash, Zhao chose to share her story as a warning to others who may be in similar situations. She wrote, 'My inner core is rotten, and I'm not dignified, but I don't need you to blacklist me. I'm done. So, baobei, if you ever find yourselves in danger, don't believe any comforting words with hidden motives. The most important thing is to call the police! Mary Kills People premiere shocks K-drama fans with euthanasia and same-sex themes

MBC's bold new drama Mary Kills People wasted no time making waves. Premiering on August 1, the series dove headfirst into two big taboo topics: euthanasia and underage same-sex attraction - both tackled within its very first episode. Veteran actress Lee Bo-young stars as Woo So-jung, an ER doctor who moonlights as a secret angel of death for terminally ill patients. Adapted from the Canadian series of the same name, the Korean remake reimagines the morally gray original with a culturally specific twist - one that's already igniting debate across Korean social media. Euthanasia enters the K-drama spotlight The opening sequence sets the tone: a gravely ill man named Choi Kang-yoon (played by special guest Lee Sang-yoon) calmly declares his intent to die. "This is my choice, and I feel happy and satisfied at this moment," he says, raising a glass of champagne dosed with pentobarbital. "How long will it take?" he asks. Woo So-jung's reply is emotionless: "Usually, it ends in an instant." And just like that -he's gone. Queer-coded teens raise eyebrows But the episode doesn't stop there. A provocative subplot features So-jung's teenage niece Jae-yeon (Kim Sang-ji) and her friend Woo-mi (Kang Na-eon), who spend a sleepover sharing moments that blur the line between platonic and romantic. "My mom thinks it's totally safe if it's just girls," Woo-mi scoffs. "She thinks she knows everything but knows nothing." The tension builds as the girls exchange lingering glances and tender compliments, including Woo-mi telling Jae-yeon, "Your eyes are really pretty." Pushing the boundaries of primetime From assisted dying to queer-coded adolescent intimacy, Mary Kills People is making it clear: this isn't your average K-drama. The premiere has already sparked fierce online discussion - some praising its plot while others are calling it deeply uncomfortable. Regardless of the views of K-drama fans, Mary Kills People has started a conversation Korea wasn't ready to have - but can no longer ignore. Episode 2 airs August 2 at 10 PM KST on MBC. For viewers abroad, fans can watch it on Prime Video. For all the latest K-drama, K-pop, and Hallyuwood updates, keep following our coverage here.
