‘My son will not come back': Father of Bengaluru stampede victim says compensation will go to wife, daughter

Hindustan Times08-06-2025
Devraj, the father of one of the deceased in the Bengaluru stampede on June 4, said on Sunday that he would use the compensation announced by the state government for her wife and daughter.
He said the cheque of ₹25 lakh given to him won't bring his son back, who died in the stampede that broke out during a victory parade of the IPL-winning team RCB in Bengaluru on June 4.
"I have been given a cheque of ₹25 lakhs, but my son will not come back. I will not use this money for my benefit... I will put it in the account of my daughter and her mother and keep the money for her future..." Devraj said.

Devraj's son, Manoj, was among the 11 people who died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru.
The stampede occurred on the evening of June 4 in front of the stadium after a large number of people thronged to participate in the celebrations of RCB's first-ever IPL victory.
According to Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, the venue could not handle the size of the crowd, adding that the stadium's capacity was 35,000 but 2 to 3 lakh people had turned up for the celebrations.

The state government has appointed a one-member inquiry commission led by retired High Court judge Justice John Michael D'Cunha to investigate the tragedy.
It has also announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh for the families of the deceased. The Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government had earlier announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh.
'I have ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium from ₹10 lakh each to ₹25 lakh. Our government hopes that families who have lost loved ones will not suffer further due to financial problems," he wrote on X on Saturday.
In addition to the government's aid, the RCB franchise had earlier announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh per victim's family and promised the creation of a support fund to assist those who were injured in the incident.

Will not interfere in Madras High Court order against DMK membership drive, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to intervene against an interim order of the Madras High Court restraining the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu from sending OTP verification messages to mobile phone users during its ongoing Oraniyil Tamil Nadu membership drive. 'The court has to protect the citizens. Go back to the High Court. We are not inclined to interfere in the matter. Dismissed,' a Bench, headed by Justice P.S. Narasimha, said. The apex court did not budge even as senior advocate P. Wilson, appearing for the DMK, submitted that the party was not collecting Aadhaar details. On July 21, a Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete of the Madras High Court had issued an interim injunction to the limited extent (of OTP messages) till the issue of right to privacy and data protection were examined in detail. The High Court reasoned that the fundamental rights of the people were at stake. The High Court said that during the door-to-door membership drive, personal information, including mobile phone numbers, were obtained and OTP verification messages were sent to these. 'Data protection of the individuals is an essential element of Article 21 of the Constitution. In the absence of accountability and transparency in the data collected from individuals across the State, it is an issue which needs elaborate analysis,' the Bench had observed.

RLD moots Ambedkar Panchteerth plan to tap Dalit voters

Lucknow: (RLD) president has intensified efforts to consolidate the Dalit vote bank in western Uttar Pradesh ahead of next year's panchayat elections and the 2027 UP elections. His recent push for Ambedkar Teerth Sthal Yatra Yojana has shifted focus to the party's strategy of strengthening support among Dalit communities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on July 28, Chaudhary emphasised the need to enable Dalit and socially oppressed sections to visit Panchteerth – the five key sites associated with BR Ambedkar. These are Mhow-Janmabhoomi, London-Shiksha Bhoomi, Delhi-Mahaparinirvan Sthal, Nagpur-Diksha Bhoomi, and Mumbai-Chaitya Bhoomi. "Due to govt efforts, these pilgrimage sites have now developed into major tourist destinations as well as sources of inspiration. However, for economically weaker sections, visiting these places remains difficult. Therefore, to support them, a scheme named Ambedkar Teerth Sthal Yatra Yojana should be launched, so that people can easily visit and experience five major places associated with Dr Ambedkar's life," the RLD chief said. He said the scheme would make people understand Ambedkar's principles and ideas for building an egalitarian society. "It would not only promote social harmony but also serve as a concrete step towards realising Ambedkar's dreams," Jayant, also a Union minister, said. Experts said that by invoking Ambedkar and focusing on Panchteerth, Jayant Chaudhary is attempting to build an emotional and ideological alignment with Dalit voters, a group that has largely been loyal to , and in recent years courted by BJP and SP. They added that this also marks Jayant's another bid to channelise the Dalit vote bank amid the rise of Azad Samaj Party chief Chandrashekhar Azad, who won the Nagina parliamentary seat in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Analysts said Jayant's letter to Yogi puts the state govt on record. It also avoids confrontation and indicates that RLD is playing within the constitutional and cultural framework, respecting its alliance with BJP while retaining its independent identity. RLD sources said the party wants to consolidate the Dalits, primarily the Jatav community, which has traditionally been the supporter of Bahujan Samaj Party. With BSP's political graph has been on a decline in recent years, the RLD sees an opportunity to fill in the vacuum. RLD national secretary Anupam Mishra said the party has stepped up its outreach to Dalits in recent times and added that "we need to work more aggressively to sustain our momentum and get more closely associated with Dalits and other oppressed classes." Sources said RLD has been sending feelers amongst Dalits since 2024 when it snapped ties with Samajwadi Party and joined the BJP-led NDA. In fact, it was Anil Kumar, a Dalit MLA from Purkazi (Muzaffarnagar), who got a ministerial seat during UP cabinet expansion in 2024.

Mediaperson found hanging, police hint at financial woes

Thiruvananthapuram: A 76-year-old mediaperson was found hanging in the old govt office building at Kanaka Nagar on Monday morning. Police identified the deceased as Anand Shashi, a Kanaka Nagar resident, who worked in a vernacular daily. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He was found hanging from an iron pipe in the courtyard of a dilapidated structure. Museum police registered a case of unnatural death. Shashi, who was reportedly involved with Congress-led Mundela Residents' Cooperative Society, invested Rs 1.67 crore in the group but didn't receive any money in return. Investigators hinted that acute financial distress due to the lost amount was a likely trigger to his death. Shashi left home near Vellayambalam in Kanaka Nagar on Sunday night. He failed to return home, prompting a search that ultimately led to the grim discovery in the old office premises. Sources said the cooperative society apparently fell into disarray amid allegations of mismanagement and fraud, causing financial losses to many investors, including Shashi. The emotional toll from the inability to recover his substantial deposit is believed to have severely affected his mental well-being, police said. A postmortem examination has been scheduled for Tuesday, while further investigation is under way to determine the circumstances leading to Shashi's death.
