‘My son will not come back': Father of Bengaluru stampede victim says compensation will go to wife, daughter
He said the cheque of ₹25 lakh given to him won't bring his son back, who died in the stampede that broke out during a victory parade of the IPL-winning team RCB in Bengaluru on June 4.
"I have been given a cheque of ₹25 lakhs, but my son will not come back. I will not use this money for my benefit... I will put it in the account of my daughter and her mother and keep the money for her future..." Devraj said.

Devraj's son, Manoj, was among the 11 people who died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru.
The stampede occurred on the evening of June 4 in front of the stadium after a large number of people thronged to participate in the celebrations of RCB's first-ever IPL victory.
According to Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, the venue could not handle the size of the crowd, adding that the stadium's capacity was 35,000 but 2 to 3 lakh people had turned up for the celebrations.

The state government has appointed a one-member inquiry commission led by retired High Court judge Justice John Michael D'Cunha to investigate the tragedy.
It has also announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh for the families of the deceased. The Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government had earlier announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh.
'I have ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium from ₹10 lakh each to ₹25 lakh. Our government hopes that families who have lost loved ones will not suffer further due to financial problems," he wrote on X on Saturday.
In addition to the government's aid, the RCB franchise had earlier announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh per victim's family and promised the creation of a support fund to assist those who were injured in the incident.

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to intervene against an interim order of the Madras High Court restraining the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu from sending OTP verification messages to mobile phone users during its ongoing Oraniyil Tamil Nadu membership drive. The High Court said that during the door-to-door membership drive, personal information, including mobile phone numbers, were obtained and OTP verification messages were sent to these. 'Data protection of the individuals is an essential element of Article 21 of the Constitution. In the absence of accountability and transparency in the data collected from individuals across the State, it is an issue which needs elaborate analysis,' the Bench had observed.

His recent push for Ambedkar Teerth Sthal Yatra Yojana has shifted focus to the party's strategy of strengthening support among Dalit communities. These are Mhow-Janmabhoomi, London-Shiksha Bhoomi, Delhi-Mahaparinirvan Sthal, Nagpur-Diksha Bhoomi, and Mumbai-Chaitya Bhoomi. "Due to govt efforts, these pilgrimage sites have now developed into major tourist destinations as well as sources of inspiration. However, for economically weaker sections, visiting these places remains difficult. Therefore, to support them, a scheme named Ambedkar Teerth Sthal Yatra Yojana should be launched, so that people can easily visit and experience five major places associated with Dr Ambedkar's life," the RLD chief said. Mediaperson found hanging, police hint at financial woes
Thiruvananthapuram: A 76-year-old mediaperson was found hanging in the old govt office building at Kanaka Nagar on Monday morning. Police identified the deceased as Anand Shashi, a Kanaka Nagar resident, who worked in a vernacular daily. Shashi, who was reportedly involved with Congress-led Mundela Residents' Cooperative Society, invested Rs 1.67 crore in the group but didn't receive any money in return. Investigators hinted that acute financial distress due to the lost amount was a likely trigger to his death. Shashi left home near Vellayambalam in Kanaka Nagar on Sunday night. He failed to return home, prompting a search that ultimately led to the grim discovery in the old office premises. Sources said the cooperative society apparently fell into disarray amid allegations of mismanagement and fraud, causing financial losses to many investors, including Shashi. The emotional toll from the inability to recover his substantial deposit is believed to have severely affected his mental well-being, police said. A postmortem examination has been scheduled for Tuesday, while further investigation is under way to determine the circumstances leading to Shashi's death.
