Roorkee: Two people died and two others were injured in separate lightning strikes in Haridwar's Laksar area on Friday. Bholi Devi, 45, and Mohammad Shahbaz, 22, were working in their fields when lightning struck.
Devi, a resident of Muktarbad village and works as a daily wager, was weeding a sugarcane field in Hussainpur village with two others when the weather suddenly turned around 8.30 am. As it began to rain, the three took shelter under a mango tree. Soon a lightning strike fell near Devi, killing her on the spot. Her two companions, who were on the other side of the tree, sustained burns but survived. They were admitted to a local hospital and are now out of danger.
Bholi's body was sent for postmortem.
Shahbaz, from Jainpur Khurd village, was also working in his field when he was struck by lightning. His family rushed him to hospital, but he died on the way. They declined a postmortem and informed officials that they did not wish to pursue any official proceedings.
"In cases of death due to lightning, an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh is provided to the victim's family under the Disaster Relief Fund. Since only Devi's postmortem was conducted, her family alone will receive this compensation," said SDM Laksar Saurabh Aswal.

Big Setback For Jacqueline Fernandez In Rs 200 Crore Money Laundering Case

New Delhi: In a big setback for Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez, the Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to quash criminal proceedings against her in connection with a Rs 200 crore money laundering case, involving alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar. The bench of Justice Anish Dayal has rejected the quashing petition filed by Ms Fernandez. The court had reserved the decision in April after hearing arguments from all the parties in the case. The Bollywood actor's counsel had claimed in the High Court that she was unaware of the illicit origin of gifts she received, which are allegedly part of a Rs 200 crore money laundering case involving the conman. Her lawyer claimed that she did not know that the gifts were part of the proceeds of crime. The Bollywood actress had also sought quashing of the second supplementary chargesheet of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the case and proceedings pending in a trial court. However, the ED argued that her petition was not maintainable as a special court had taken cognisance of the chargesheet and prima facie found a case. While the same cognisance order of the trial court was not challenged by her. Sukesh Chandrasekhar is currently lodged in jail for allegedly duping the spouses of former promoters of Ranbaxy, Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh of Rs 200 crore. He is facing multiple investigations across the country over such cases. According to the ED, Chandrasekhar and his wife Leena Paulose, allegedly used hawala routes and created shell companies along with other accused persons to park the money earned as proceeds of crime. "It is also not the case of ED that she was aware that gifts she received were part of proceeds of crime," the actress's counsel had argued in court. The ED has alleged that Ms Fernandez did not verify the newspaper article about Sukesh Chandrasekar. She received gifts from him. However, Ms Fernandez's lawyer submitted that the actress came across the newspaper article in February 2019. But newspaper article is not evidence. It was further claimed by her lawyer that she was convinced by co-accused Pinky Irani that Sukesh was being made a scapegoat as he had high political connections.

SAT quashes SEBI ban on former Care Ratings CEO, terms order a 'misadventure'

MUMBAI: The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) has overturned an order issued by the markets regulator SEBI banning Rajesh Mokashi, the former managing director and chief executive of Care Ratings, for allegedly securing favourable ratings for a few issuers rated by his agency. The markets regulator SEBI had in April 2023 had debarred Mokashi from associating with any stock markets or market intermediaries for two years. The tribunal has also imposed a penalty of Rs 5 lakh on the Securities and Exchange Board for causing 'irreparable damages' to the appellant's reputation. The tribunal in its order dated June 27 and uploaded on its website Wednesday also said SEBI caused reputational and financial damage to Mokashi and wasted judicial time, while ignoring justice BN Srikrishna's exoneration in the ratings case. 'The SEBI action had also caused a colossal loss of judicial time and resources, as well as financial loss, and loss of further opportunities,' the order said. 'This is an unfortunate case in which the SEBI had directed Care Ratings to send the appellant on leave till completion of the forensic audit…Though the Srikrishna report had returned a categorical finding that there was no evidence to suggest that the appellant had interfered with or influenced the rating decision, SEBI embarked on another misadventure to conduct one more proceeding through its WTM,' the SAT order noted.

ED raids across multiple cities in Delhi Jal Board STP scam case; Rs 41 lakh in cash seized

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted extensive search operations across multiple cities, including Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Hyderabad on July 3, in connection with a corruption case linked to the Delhi Jal Board's (DJB) sewage treatment projects. The probe stems from an FIR lodged by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Delhi Government against M/s Euroteck Environmental Pvt Ltd and others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in the awarding of contracts worth Rs 1,943 crore for the augmentation and upgradation of 10 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in the national Capital. The four key tenders — related to STPs at Pappankalan, Nilothi, Najafgarh, Keshopur, Coronation Pillar, Narela, Rohini, and Kondli — were awarded in October 2022 to three Joint Venture (JV) firms. According to the FIR, only three JVs participated in all four tenders, each securing one or two contracts through apparent mutual arrangement. Investigators suspect collusion among the JVs to manipulate the bidding process. The ACB alleges that the tendering process was deliberately made restrictive — notably through the imposition of the Integrated Fixed-film Activated Sludge technology requirement — limiting the number of eligible bidders. Moreover, the estimated cost of the projects was inflated from Rs 1,546 crore to Rs 1,943 crore without proper justification or revised project reports, allegedly causing a significant loss to public funds. ED's findings corroborated the FIR, revealing that all three JVs submitted identical experience certificates from a Taiwanese project, which were accepted by the DJB without verification. After securing the tenders, the JVs subcontracted the entire work to Euroteck Environmental Pvt Ltd, the original accused in the FIR. During the searches, ED officials seized Rs 41 lakh in cash, along with several incriminating documents and digital evidence. The ED stated that further investigation is underway to trace the money trail and identify the role of officials and private entities involved in the alleged scam.
