Zelensky cuts SA visit short after Russia's overnight attack on Kyiv

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Union Buildings on Thursday.
But, due to developments in his home country, he will be "cancelling part of the programme for this visit and will return to Ukraine immediately".
This after an overnight attack in his home country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will cut short his working visit to South Africa and will return home due to an overnight attack in his country.
Zelensky took to X and said he would inform President Cyril Ramaphosa about the situation in his home country and the need to intensify global diplomatic efforts.
"I am cancelling part of the programme for this visit and will return to Ukraine immediately after the meeting with the president of South Africa.
"The foreign minister of Ukraine will hold all the necessary meetings in South Africa to fully inform the country's political and civil society leaders about the situation. I am grateful to everyone around the world who stands with Ukraine and supports our people."
Earlier, News24 reported that the engagement proceeded without the traditional pomp and pageantry accompanying a state visit, such as the ceremonial 21-gun salute by the South African National Defence Force and an inspection of the guard of honour by a visiting head of state.
Instead, the leaders prioritised the substantive matters on their agenda.
News24 reliably learnt early on Thursday that Zelensky's team had asked for the programme to be shortened significantly due to the developments in that country.
In his post at 09:26, Zelensky said that it had been 44 days since Ukraine agreed to a full ceasefire and a halt to strikes.
"This was a proposal from the United States. And it has been 44 days of Russia continuing to kill our people and evading tough pressure and accountability for its actions.
"It is extremely important that everyone around the world sees and understands what is really happening. Nearly 70 missiles, including ballistic ones. And about 150 attack drones. Unfortunately, there is significant destruction. Rescue operations are ongoing, and the rubble of residential buildings is being cleared. As of this moment, over 80 people have been injured across Ukraine."

Zelensky said nine people had been killed in Russian drone and missile attacks in Kyiv.
"My condolences go out to their families and loved ones. There was a report from the military command. I instructed the Minister of Defence of Ukraine to immediately contact our partners regarding our requests to strengthen air defences."
Today, I will brief President Ramaphosa of South Africa, who currently holds the G20 Presidency, on the situation and our need to intensify global diplomatic efforts. The strikes must be stopped immediately and unconditionally. We also count on support in humanitarian matters — in the return of our prisoners and Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
Zelensky arrived in South Africa three days after Ramaphosa and Russia's Vladimir Putin discussed working together toward a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Russian drone and cruise missile attacks kill at least 2 in Ukraine

At least two people were killed overnight into Saturday as Russia continued to pound Ukraine with hundreds of drones as part of a stepped-up bombing campaign that has further dampened hopes for a breakthrough in efforts to end the more than three-year-old war. Two people died and 14 were wounded when Russian forces attacked the Bukovina area in the Chernivtsi region of southwestern Ukraine with four drones and a missile, regional Gov. Ruslan Zaparaniuk said Saturday. He said that the two people died due to falling debris from a drone. A drone attack in Ukraine's western Lviv region wounded six people, regional Gov. Maksym Kozytskyi said. Three people were wounded in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine when the city was hit by eight drones and two missiles, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said. Russia fired 597 drones and decoys, along with 26 cruise missiles, into Ukraine overnight into Saturday, Ukraine's air force said. Of these, 319 drones and 25 cruise missiles were shot down and 258 decoy drones were lost, likely having been electronically jammed. Russia has been stepping up its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities. Earlier this week, Russia fired more than 700 attack and decoy drones at Ukraine overnight, topping previous nightly barrages for the third time in two weeks and targeting Lutsk near the border with Poland in western Ukraine, a region that is a crucial hub for receiving foreign military aid. Poland's air force scrambled fighter jets in areas bordering Ukraine, Polish officials said. Russia's intensifying long-range attacks have coincided with a concerted Russian effort to break through parts of the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, where Ukrainian troops are under severe pressure. Russia's Defense Ministry said it shot down 33 Ukrainian drones overnight into Saturday.

2 dead as Russia attacks Ukraine overnight with almost 600 drones, Ukraine says

LONDON -- Hundreds of Russian attack drones and more than two dozen cruise missiles targeted Ukraine overnight, killing at least two people, as Moscow continued its campaign of nighttime strikes against civilian areas throughout the country, officials said. The deaths were in Chernivtsi, in the country's southwest, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, adding that the attack's targets stretched from the Kharkiv and Sumy regions in the east across to the Lviv region in the west. "My condolences to their families and loved ones," Zelenskyy said in a statement posted to social media. "Around 20 more people injured in the attack are receiving all the necessary assistance." Ukraine's Ministry of Defense said Russia fired at least 597 attack drones and 26 cruise missiles overnight. Some 319 drones and 25 missiles were shot down by Ukraine's defenses, the military said, adding that another 258 drones "were suppressed by electronic warfare."
