Gujarat: 700 documents examined, 100 individuals questioned in Narmada fake income probe
The MP highlighted that several bogus documents were allegedly being created and used to claim entitlements such as old age pensions, widow pensions, and possibly even benefits under the Right to Information (RTI) scheme.
The concern was not only about the false claims but also about the potential involvement of middlemen, private agents, or even government personnel who may be facilitating this fraudulent practice.
The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Narmada district constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), who is heading the SIT, confirmed that around 700 documents have been examined so far, and 100 individuals were questioned at Rajpipla Police Station as part of the ongoing investigation.
'If the documents are found to be falsified, the individuals responsible for submitting them will be treated as accused in the case,' said the DySP.
Notably, some of the alleged accused have already applied for anticipatory bail in the district court. The Narmada Police have filed objections to these applications, and the matter is currently under judicial review.
The SIT is also probing whether any government officials or private agents played a role in the creation of these bogus documents.
If found complicit, their names will be added to the list of accused.
Authorities are also investigating that if the forged documents were used to exploit government welfare schemes, such as old age pensions, widow pensions, or benefits under the RTI scheme.
The police emphasised that there is no political interference in the investigation and that the force is committed to conducting the probe fairly and impartially.
'The rule of law will prevail. No one, regardless of their position or connection, will be spared if found guilty,' the DySP concluded.

Former celebrity manager Disha Salian ended her own life and no foul play has been found in her death, the Mumbai police have submitted to the Bombay High Court, even as her father Satish Salian reiterated she was gang-raped and murdered. Disha Salian ended her own life, and the postmortem report mentions no signs of sexual and/or physical assault on the deceased, the police said in an affidavit filed before the HC last month. She was under tremendous mental stress due to a dispute with her family and also because her business deals were not working out, the affidavit added. The former celebrity manager died on June 8, 2020 , in Malad area of Mumbai. The city police had then registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). Satish Salian filed a petition in the HC in March this year, seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into his daughter's death and an FIR against Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aditya Thackeray. In the plea, he claimed his daughter was found dead under mysterious circumstances in June 2020. He alleged that she was raped and murdered and subsequently there was a politically orchestrated cover-up to protect certain influential persons. The petition came up for hearing on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) before a Bench headed by Justice A.S. Gadkari, which posted it for further hearing on July 16. The Malvani police, who probed the case first, in their affidavit, however, said Disha Salian had ended her own life. Disha Salian was under tremendous mental stress due to a dispute with her family and also because her business deals were not working out, said the affidavit filed by Malvani police station's Senior Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar. She was drunk at the time of the incident, and even her fiance, who was with her at the time, had ruled out any foul play or suspicion, it said. Even her postmortem report does not indicate anything suspicion about the death, the affidavit said. The police also said the contentions raised by Mr. Satish Salian in his plea were baseless and unfounded. The closure report filed by the police was based on scientific investigation conducted and the postmortem report, they added. 'The report is conclusive in nature and mentions no signs of sexual and/or physical assault on the deceased,' the affidavit said. It also claimed that after the closure report was filed, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was set up to further probe the case and even the SIT's findings are coherent with the earlier findings of the police. 'However, further investigation is still being carried out,' the affidavit said. Mr. Satish Salian, in an application submitted on Wednesday (July 2, 2025), however, said once information disclosing the commission of a cognisable offence is received, the police must register an FIR and then probe it. He said the SIT has been probing a serious case of gang rape and murder without first registering an FIR, which is grossly illegal. There has been wilful disobedience of the court order as an affidavit was sought from the Maharashtra Government's Chief Secretary and not the police, he claimed. Meanwhile, Aditya Thackeray has also filed an application, seeking to intervene in the matter and urged the court to grant him a hearing before passing any order. Disha Salian death: Mumbai police oppose father's plea for fresh probe by reiterating suicide conclusion
The Mumbai police Wednesday opposed a writ plea in the Bombay High Court by the father of Disha Salian, who was the former manager of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, seeking a fresh investigation into her death. The police reiterated that based on their probe so far, Salian died by suicide. Salian, 28, died on June 8, 2020, at a residential building in suburban Malad, six days before Rajput's death at his Bandra residence on June 14. Satish Salian, in his petition seeking registration of an FIR based on a written complaint given by activist and lawyer Rashid Khan Pathan in January 2024 against Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray and transferring the probe to the CBI, claimed that he initially believed that the investigation was 'genuine, but later found it to be a cover-up'. Seeking dismissal of the plea, a senior officer of the Malvani police station stated that a closure report had been filed in the case, and findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted in 2023, related to the circumstances that caused her death are consistent with the findings of the earlier investigation. The SIT is carrying out further investigation, the officer stated. However, petitioner Satish Salian, in his rejoinder to the police's affidavit, claimed that the high court, on April 30, directed the state government, through its chief secretary, to file a reply to the plea. Instead, an 'unauthorised and biased' response by a 'conflicted officer' of the Malvani police was filed, he alleged. An affidavit in reply filed by Shailendra Raghunath Nagarkar, senior Police Inspector of the Malvani police station, stated that an accidental death report (ADR) was registered on June 9, 2020. After the probe, the then investigation officer filed a closure report, which a special executive magistrate accepted on February 4, 2021. The officer added that contentions in the father's plea are 'baseless and unfounded', while maintaining that Disha Salian died by suicide. The affidavit further claimed that the statements of the witnesses 'revealed that the deceased was under tremendous mental stress due to dispute with her family as well as her business deals (that) could not be materialised'. The officer further stated that the closure report was based on scientific investigation and post-mortem report and 'it is conclusive in nature and mentions no signs of sexual and/or physical assault'. The police further stated that, following several questions raised regarding the ADR, the state government established an SIT in December 2023. The SIT, as per the affidavit, reinvestigated the ADR. During the probe, all important witnesses were recalled, CCTV footage was carefully observed again, and call detail records (CDR) of important witnesses were carefully analysed, it added. 'So far, the findings of SIT pertaining to the circumstances that caused deceased Disha Salian's death are coherent with the finding of an earlier investigation officer of the said case. However, further investigation is still being carried out by the SIT,' the affidavit added. The police further said there was 'no corroborative evidence to substantiate the claims raised in the petition' and there is 'no room for suspicion as against the investigation' and there were' no grounds to initiate probe for allegations of gang rape. The probe has been conducted following 'fair and impartial procedures', and based on the post-mortem report, which 'concludes the cause of death due to head injury with multiple injuries (unnatural),' the police said. Meanwhile, Aaditya Thackeray, through an intervention application, sought to be heard in the matter and said that the petitioner has 'relied upon false, baseless and hearsay allegations'. A bench of Justices Ajey S Gadkari and Rajesh S Patil adjourned the hearing on the plea by two weeks.

Erased all evidences: Ram Kadam targets Shiv Sena (UBT) as SIT rules out no foul play in Salian case
BJP MLA Ram Kadam on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Shiv Sena (UBT), accusing the former Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government of erasing key evidence in the Disha Salian case as part of a broader conspiracy. Kadam's remarks came a day after the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted to reinvestigate the death of Disha Salian -- former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput -- submitted before the Bombay High Court that no foul play was found in her death. The SIT, however, said its probe remains ongoing. Speaking to IANS, Ram Kadam said, 'In the Disha Salian case, the then Uddhav Thackeray government erased all the evidence as part of a conspiracy. If the evidence had not been destroyed, the real accused would have been exposed. The government, the police -- everything was under their control. Why was the evidence destroyed? Who were they protecting?" He further linked the incident to other high-profile cases during the Thackeray government's tenure, including the death of Sushant Singh Rajput and the Palghar mob lynching. 'These were not mere incidents; they were acts of heinous cover-ups by the then government,' he alleged. Referring to Salian's grieving family, Kadam said, 'Disha Salian's father has lost his daughter. That pain can never be compensated. But they are being denied justice because evidence was deliberately destroyed. Sanjay Raut and others in the Opposition must answer -- who destroyed the evidence and why?' Kadam further hailed Ghana's highest civilian honour to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, by President John Dramani Mahama. 'This is not just an honour for PM Modi, but for 140 crore Indians. The world is beginning to recognise India's leadership,' Kadam said. On a separate issue, Kadam also reacted to a disturbing incident in Pune, where a 22-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a courier delivery staffer in her upscale residential society. According to police, the accused entered her home after she went inside to check her phone for an OTP. 'We will investigate the Pune incident thoroughly. No one will be spared -- just as no one has ever been spared under our government,' Kadam concluded.
