Colton Herta Rises to Top as Andretti Global Stays Quick at Detroit
A second Andretti Global driver has stepped to the fore, as Colton Herta led pre-qualifying practice for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear on Saturday morning.
Herta produced the top lap of the one-hour session on the nine-turn, 1.645-mile downtown street circuit, 1 minute, 1.7823 seconds, in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda. That's just slightly slower than the top lap of the weekend turned Friday by his teammate Kyle Kirkwood, 1:01.7509, as air temperatures this morning hovered in the mid-50s under overcast skies.

Scott McLaughlin stayed in the No. 2 position for a second straight session in the No. 3 TireRack.com Team Penske Chevrolet with his top lap of 1:01.8995. Kirkwood stayed sharp, ending up third at 1:01.9423 in the No. 27 Siemens AWS Honda.
Callum Ilott brought PREMA Racing closer to the front of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES grid for the second straight weekend by ending up fourth at 1:02.1450 in the team's No. 90 Chevrolet. Ilott's rookie teammate, Robert Shwartzman, was the shock pole winner for the 109th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.
Rookie Louis Foster, the 2024 INDY NXT by Firestone champion, enjoyed one of his strongest sessions of the season. He rounded out the top five at 1:02.1696 in the No. 45 Mi-Jack Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
109th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge winner Alex Palou continued to struggle for the first time this season. Palou, who has won five of the first six races this season, managed to improve to 12th at 1:02.5318 in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda after ending up 15th out of 27 drivers Friday.

What McLaren CEO Zak Brown Thinks Of FOX Acquiring A Third Of IndyCar
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has offered many opinions on what IndyCar owner Roger Penske and Penske Entertainment need to do to increase the footprint of the NTT IndyCar Series. In the past, he has talked about massive investment in promotion and marketing, even the possibility of bringing on an ownership partner to make that happen. On August 31, IndyCar announced that partner as FOX purchased a one-third stake in Penske Entertainment including IndyCar, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, INDY NXT by Firestone and IMS Productions. In addition, FOX Sports media rights partnership with IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500 has been extended. The deal is worth between $125 million to $135 million and gives Penske Entertainment the opportunity to grow and expand IndyCar awareness through additional marketing and promotion. FOX Sports is in its first season as the broadcast partner for the NTT IndyCar Series. Zak Brown Incredibly Impressed In addition to owning the McLaren Racing Formula One team, Brown and McLaren also own the Arrow McLaren IndyCar team featuring drivers Pato O'Ward of Monterrey, Mexico, Christian Lundgaard of Hedensted, Denmark, and Nolan Siegel of Palo Alto, California. Brown has been incredibly impressed with FOX Sports' promotional and marketing efforts regarding IndyCar, especially the enthusiasm of FOX Sports CEO Eric Shanks. 'The news today on FOX's acquisition and investment into the NTT IndyCar Series is very positive for everyone involved,' Brown said after the announcement. 'They believe in the series and its potential, and they've already shown the marketing power they can bring to grow the sport and its exposure to new fans. 'Eric (Shanks) and I have had many conversations on his ideas to broadcast and promote IndyCar, and there will be a lot of exciting things to look forward to. This deal may seem unique because Penske gives up an ownership stake in the company that owns IndyCar, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500, but he does not give up control. When Liberty Media purchased Formula One in 2017, it acquired ownership control of the international racing series. FOX has a large stake in IndyCar and will be actively involved in helping to grow the series, but the ultimately control remains with Penske. In other sports, Disney's ESPN is involved in discussions with the National Football League involving a 10 percent stake in ESPN, in return for the NFL Network and RedZone Channels, according to numerous media reports. FOX Sports owns the United Football League (UFL) and is involved with the Big Ten, including ownership of the Big Ten Network. Warner Brothers, Discovery has an ownership stake in professional three-on-three women's basketball league, Unrivaled. Although Penske said he wasn't looking for additional capital, FOX's one-year improvement in viewership, including 7.1 million viewers for this year's Indianapolis 500, created interest when he was approached by FOX. With Shanks and FOX providing bold vision, it gives IndyCar an opportunity to work on new events, sponsorship opportunities and increasing on site attendance at race tracks on the schedule. That is exactly what McLaren's Zak Brown has wanted.

Alex Palou's Run Toward History Keeps Stretch Run Spicy
INDYCAR Eight isn't enough for Alex Palou, who has a chance to match – or perhaps break -- open-wheel racing's oldest record. It was 61 years ago that A.J. Foyt won 10 races in the 1964 season, a mark equaled by Al Unser six years later. Since then, only Mario Andretti (nine wins in 1969) has been close to that lofty win total. Five drivers finished a season with eight wins, which is where Palou's total stands. But he's a reasonable bet to add more. He has twice been to victory lane at Portland International Raceway, site of the Grand Prix of Portland presented by askROI on Sunday, Aug. 10 (3 p.m. ET, FOX, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). The season's final two races are on ovals, and he won the most recent oval event July 13 at Iowa Speedway. If anything, Palou has proven this year that he can win anywhere at any time. He is now on the short list of active drivers who have won on a superspeedway, a short oval, a road course and a street circuit. He absolutely could run the table this season, although it's been 19 years since a driver won four consecutive races (Sebastien Bourdais in 2006). Palou's command of the standings is similarly impressive. He leads Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward by 121 points and nearly everyone else by 200 or more. A win by Palou in Portland will clinch the title, regardless of how O'Ward fares the rest of the way. O'Ward's only realistic path to the top is to win out, but he has never won two series races in succession, much less three. A fourth series title will move Palou in lofty company. Foyt has the most season championships with seven. Scott Dixon has six. Palou would tie Andretti, Bourdais and Dario Franchitti with four. The only drivers with at least three consecutive titles are Bourdais (four in a row), Ted Horn (three) and Franchitti (three), but they'll need to make room for the latest to do so. O'Ward might not overtake Palou, but he likely will finish a career-best second in the standings. He has a 77-point advantage on Dixon, who is aiming for his 16th top-three finish in 25 seasons. He has finished second three times, third on six occasions. The Rookie of the Year battle is tight. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing's Louis Foster, last year's INDY NXT by Firestone champion, leads PREMA Racing's Robert Shwartzman by four points. The award is nice to win but is not always a predictor of the future. In 2020, Palou finished 51 points behind Rinus VeeKay for the honor. In 1997, Franchitti finished behind Patrick Carpentier and Gualter Salles. Like Palou, Will Power has two series wins at Portland, including last year when he finished 9.8267 seconds ahead of the Spaniard. Power could be driving for his future as he is in the final year of his contract with Team Penske, which has employed him since 2009. Team Penske's Scott McLaughlin is the other former Portland winner expected to be in the 27-car field. Dixon has finished on the road course's podium three of the past four years. The final two races of the year are on ovals. O'Ward and McLaughlin were the victors in last year's doubleheader at the Milwaukee Mile. Dixon (2009) and Power (2014) are also former winners at the track. The season concludes at Nashville Superspeedway on Aug. 31. Herta won there last year with O'Ward finishing second; Dixon is a three-time winner (2006, 2007, 2008). A lot will be decided this month, including seats for the 2026 season. But for now, it's Palou's world, and everyone else is just driving in it. recommended Item 1 of 1
