It was 3 p.m., and already Mitra Mechanic had completed a yoga class and a four-hour guided hike. Peeling off her sweat-soaked clothes and devouring a snack — a few pieces of raw vegetables and a meager dollop of hummus — she steeled herself for the next workout on her packed schedule: strength training.

Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg 'continuing to fight' cancer, he shares in Instagram update

Legendary Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg posted an update to his health on Instagram, saying he is "continuing to fight" his cancer. Sandberg was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2024. He underwent treatment and shared he was declared cancer-free in August of that year. In December he let fans know the cancer had come back and spread to other organs, CBS Sports reported. Last week, Sandberg shared another update on his social media, writing, "It's been a challenging few months as I have been going through treatment on a regular basis. While I am continuing to fight, I'm looking forward to making the most of every day with my loving family and friends." Sandberg wrote he hadn't been able to be at Wrigley Field as much as he's wanted to so far this year, but has been cheering the team on and watching from home. Sandberg was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005. He spent 15 seasons with the Cubs, appeared in 10 All-Star Games, won nine Gold Glove and Seven Silver Slugger awards, and was named the National Leage MVP in 1984.

Former England star Gascoigne recovering after collapse at home

Paul Gascoigne is recovering in hospital after the former Tottenham and England star collapsed at his home. Gascoigne was rushed to hospital by his driver and assistant Steve Foster, who found the 58-year-old in a semi-conscious state in his Dorset house. "Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now," Foster told The Sun newspaper. Gascoigne was reportedly admitted to an intensive care ward after being discovered on Friday, but later moved to an acute medical unit, where his condition is said to be stable. Foster said Gascoigne would "like to thank everyone for the support he's received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best." One of the most naturally gifted footballers of his generation, Gascoigne played for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton. He was capped 57 times by England, becoming a global star after his brilliant form at the 1990 World Cup in Italy reached a tearful crescendo with his emotional reaction to a yellow card, which would have ruled him out of the final, in a last four loss against West Germany. Gascoigne also starred for England during their run to the Euro 96 semi-finals, where they again lost to Germany on penalties. The midfielder's issues with alcohol addiction and depression are well-documented and he has suffered a series of health problems in recent years. In 2020, Gascoigne said he had turned his life around after having anti-alcohol pellets sewn into his stomach. But last year, he admitted on the High Performance podcast that he was a "sad drunk" living in a spare room at the home of his agent. smg/lp

Deion Sanders 'not all the way recovered' from health issue but planning return soon

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders said in a video posted by his eldest son on Sunday, July 20 that he's 'not all the way recovered' but otherwise showed signs of returning to his job in Boulder soon after recently battling an undisclosed health issue this summer. 'You know I'm still going through something,' Sanders said to his daughter Shelomi and son Deion Jr. 'I ain't all the way recovered.' The video posted by Deion Jr. then shows him dipping his legs in an ice bath. The same video showed him more physically active than before, with footage of him shooting baskets on a basketball court, sitting down after tennis lessons and discussing a 'run-walk' he finished at his estate in Texas. 'I'm getting better, though, right?' Sanders said to his youngest daughter Shelomi in the video. Sanders appeared at a Big 12 Conference media days event on July 9 in Frisco, Texas, but declined to reveal the health issue that has kept him away from campus in Boulder while a wave of recruits visited in June. Recruits were told he was out sick. While recovering in Texas, Sanders, 57, also missed a number of events in May and June, including the wedding of his star player, Travis Hunter, on May 24 in Tennessee, a speaking appearance in Florida scheduled for June 8 and Colorado's annual youth and high school camps in Boulder in June. GONE FROM CAMPUS: Did Deion Sanders' absence affect Colorado's recruiting? 'I got on the phone with him' Colorado doesn't open preseason football practice until late July and doesn't open the season until Aug 29 against Georgia Tech. But Sanders indicated he's coming back soon. In a video posted by his son Shilo on July 16, Sanders is heard talking on the phone with Shilo and telling him that he would try his best to rent a plane to visit him in Florida before visiting his other son, Shedeur, in Ohio as they try to make the rosters of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns. 'And then go to work,' Sanders said. In an interview with media personality Phillip Dukes posted on July 17, Deion Jr. also gave an update from Texas. "We headed back to Colorado next week," Deion Jr. said. "It's a blessing. It's been a long journey, a long road and soon everybody will know the reason I haven't left this house this summer. ... Everyone will know in the next few weeks or so." In another video posted on July 17, Sanders said Shedeur recently mentioned his father's weight loss and said he looked like Lil Duval, the comedian and actor. In late May, Deion Sanders said on a podcast with former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel that he had lost 14 pounds related to his health issue. He has a history of blood circulation issues in his legs, but it's not clear if that's related to his recent sabbatical. Follow reporter Brent Schrotenboer @Schrotenboer.
