The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has, in recent months, announced sweeping changes to the board exams for Classes 10 and 12. The reforms, aligned with India's National Education Policy (NEP), aim to reduce stress, encourage critical thinking and offer students more flexibility.
Two Class 10 board exams per year
For the first time, Class 10 students will get to sit board exams twice annually - in February and again in April - from 2026. This second chance allows students to improve their scores without repeating a year. The best score will count.
Shift to competency-based assessment
Exams will focus on real-world understanding and problem-solving, not rote recall. Competency-based questions - such as MCQs, case-based and source-based tasks - will form up to 50% of the paper.
Two-tier evaluation system
Marks will derive from 60 per cent board exams and 40 per cent internal assessments including projects and periodic tests, ensuring continuous evaluation. The new system is expected to be implemented in the 2026-27 academic year.
Introduction of 9-point grading scale
CBSE is adopting a more granular 9-point grading system for Classes 10 and 12, replacing the earlier five-tier scale. The top 12.5 per cent of students will receive the highest 'A1' grade.
Electives for emerging skills
New skill-based electives - including artificial intelligence and design thinking - will be integrated, reflecting the board's priority on vocational readiness.
Digital evaluation and enhanced security
CBSE plans on-screen evaluation of answer sheets and may introduce biometric verification at exam centres, continuing a move towards transparency and integrity.

In an official statement released on July 1, Professor Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, Controller of Examinations, said that affected undergraduate and postgraduate students from the 2024–25 academic year can reappear for their missed exams. The exams were originally scheduled on May 13, 14, and 15. 'All concerned students are informed that the last date to submit the Google Form for the special examinations is July 10, 2025 (Thursday), by 11:59 pm,' the university said in its notification. The university has clarified that this provision is strictly for students who were unable to appear for their exams on the specified dates due to circumstances related to Operation Sindoor. Applicants must submit valid documentary proof showing they were unable to reach Delhi.

CBSE compartment exams 2025: Practical papers to start from July 10
The practical exams for the Class 10 and Class 12 compartment/ supplementary exams will be administered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) between July 10 to 15. The exam rules for students and schools to administer the practical exams were published by the board on July 2, on the official website at The Class 12 compartment examinations will be conducted in a single day on July 15, while the CBSE Class 10 compartment exams will be administered from July 15 to July 22. This session is exclusively for students who have been put in the Repeat in Practical (RP) or Repeat in Both (RB) categories in any subject, according to the official announcement. CBSE Board Compartment Exams 2025: Important dates • Report to their schools or examination centers with admit card- July 7, 2025 • Class 10, 12 practical supplementary exams dates- From July 10 to July 15, 2025 • Class 12 compartment exams date- July 15, 2025 (single day) • CBSE Class 10 compartment exam dates- July 15 to July 22. CBSE Compartment Practical Exam 2025: Upload of scorecard On the day of the exam, all schools and exam centres are required by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to upload the results of the practical exam. The marks are definitive once they are submitted to the CBSE system and cannot be changed. It has been requested that schools and exam centres create subject-specific lists of applicants and make sure that exam dates are communicated on time. Class 12 external examiners will be chosen by regional offices, which will also supervise exam administration. They will also be in charge of making sure that the answer books are delivered to the appropriate Regional Offices following the exams and that the marks are uploaded promptly.
