KMC hires 286 portable pumps to flush out storm water from added areas

According to a civic official, though the sewerage and drainage department was ready to combat waterlogging in some of the waterlogging-prone pockets in the city proper, including Thanthania, Amherst Street, Sukeas Street, Bowbazar, MG Road, CR Avenue, Camac Street and Bhowanipore, the officials were not sure about the fate of the residents in added areas.
This is particularly concerning in parts of Behala, Tollygunge and areas off EM Bypass, where there is no underground drainage system and a drainage development project was yet to be completed.
"The drainage upgrade project under KEIIP is dragging too much, and there is no hope that we can give the residents relief this monsoon," said a KMC drainage department official.
"In such a situation, we have asked our officials in the boroughs to keep portable pumps ready and press them into service in case of a downpour," said a KMC drainage department official.
The first major drainage upgrade project for the city's drainage system was taken up by KMC under the Kolkata Environment Improvement Project (KEIP) in 2003. The majority of funds (Rs 1600 crore) from the Asian Development Bank-funded mega project were allocated to develop the drainage system in Behala. However, when the project ended after being delayed for years, the civic engineers found faults with the laying of pipes.

Additionally, several low-lying areas bordering Joka and Maheshtala municipalities were left untouched.
This necessitated a second phase of the KEIP drainage upgrade project for Behala. Under the second phase, drainage development work is in progress in areas including Silpara, Sakuntala Park, Sakherbazar, Upen Banerjee Road and parts of James Long Sarani. This work has added to the waterlogging woes, conceded a KMC drainage department official.

CHANDIGARH: The grants-in-aid to the Punjab Government from the Union Government has declined by half between the first quarter of the current financial year compared to the corresponding period last year. The revenue deficit grant which the 15th Finance Commission supposed to provide, was not received by the State, resulting a gap in revenue receipts. Sources said that as per the fiscal indicators of the first quarter of this fiscal, the State government received Rs 793.74 crore as grants-in-aid. Last year, in the same period, it got Rs 1,471.99 crore marking a decline of Rs 678.25 crore. A total of Rs 25,968 crore grant from 2021 to 2026 was given by the Commission. In the first two years, the State got maximum grants in 2021-22 of Rs 10,081 crore, Rs 8,274 crore in 2022-23. In 2023-24, it got Rs 5,618 crore, and in 2024-25, the State received Rs 1,995 crore and this year, nothing. It has impacted the total revenue receipts of the state government, which, though higher than the first quarter of 2024-25, is lower than the targeted receipts. Between April to June this year, the revenue receipts were Rs 22,938.23 crore, which is just 20.04 per cent of the total targeted revenue of Rs 1,11,740.32 crore for the entire financial year. Always, the revenue collection is higher in the first quarter of the year, said sources.

Kinetic DX Electric Scooter: The Kinetic DX electric scooter has been launched in India in two variants: DX and DX+, priced at Rs 1.11 lakh and Rs 1.17 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). Interested buyers can book the scooter online via the brand's official website. Deliveries are set to begin from October 2025. For now, the company plans to sell only 35,000 units of the DX across India. The new DX brings back memories of the original Kinetic Honda DX, launched in 1984. That scooter was widely popular among Indian families in the 90s. The new electric DX rivals other e-scooters like the Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, and Ather Rizta. Buyers will get a 3-year/30,000 km standard warranty, which can be extended up to 9 years/1,00,000 km. Both the DX and DX+ come with the same 2.5kWh IP67-rated battery pack, but have different motors. The DX variant gets a 4.7kW motor, while the DX+ is fitted with a 4.8kW motor.
