Kiwi UFC star Kai Kara-France has NZ Warriors behind him for title fight

When Kiwi mixed martial arts star Kai Kara-France steps into the Octagon on Sunday to challenge for the UFC flyweight title, he'll carry the support - and appreciation - of the high-flying NZ Warriors.
Currently ranked No.4 in the promotion's lightest division (less than 56.7kg),
Kara-France
will take his 8-4 record against
defending champion Alexandre Pantoja
of Brazil on 29 June (NZT) in UFC 310 at Las Vegas.
He has long been a fan of the Auckland NRL side, but that relationship has far surpassed one of mutual respect - he's become an integral part of the programme that currently sits fourth on the competition table halfway through the season.
Kara-France, also known as 'Don't Blink', is official listed as the Warriors wrestling consultant, a role created when Andrew Webster took over as head coach in 2023 and began looking for the small gains that would make a difference to team performance.
Kai Kara-France has contributed to the Warriors' 10-4 start to the NRL season.

Webster sought an edge in the tackle and subsequent race to marker, and the pint-sized battler was recommended to him, when he arrived at Mt Smart.
"I had a meeting with him, trying to find the right guy to help us with our defence," Webster recalled. "I couldn't believe the spirit he had and how much he motivated me.
"After that coffee, I left feeling I was stronger and tougher, and I certainly wasn't. I wondered what he would do for our guys and I know our guys are fans of UFC, so I was excited to get him and see what he could deliver.
"I've never seen a guy transition his skillset - along with Slade Griffin, our rugby league expert - into our defence. I've been really happy with that.
"Him as a person, I love him and so excited for him to chase his dreams. We don't have to take the punches like he does, but we're in it with him and so supportive of him."
The Warriors have often trained against a City Kickboxing stable that includes former middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and rising light-heavyweight contender Carlos Ulberg, under the watchful eye of master coach Eugene Bareman.
"They're world class in their field and we get to train there all the time, which is really special," Webster said.
The benefits cut both ways.
"I was there long before we were winning or doing well in the comp," Kara-France told RNZ . "Now full circle, I am working with the team and it's cool to see New Zealand get around them.
"Something I have learnt from the Warriors is that it's a journey and it's not just about when they are winning. That's what's been cool about being a Warriors fan, I grew up on the team and, when they are not doing well, they know we are there for the ride."
"It was the same at CKB. When I started, people used to think it was just thugs, but it's so big now, it can't be denied anymore."

Windies narrowly avoid lowest Test total in Aus thumping
Mitchell Starc has produced one of the all-time great bowling spells and Scott Boland taken a hat-trick as Australia bowled West Indies out for 27 to win the third Test. On a historic day in Jamaica, Australia's quicks ran riot to wrap up a 176-run victory and claim a 3-0 series sweep of the Frank Worrell Trophy. Chasing 204 for victory, West Indies' fourth innings lasted just 14.3 overs and only marginally eclipsed the lowest ever Test total of 26 by New Zealand in 1955. Boland's became just the 10th Australian to claim a Test hat-trick, but it was Starc who ripped the heart out of the hosts with figures of 6-9. Starc took three wickets in the first over of West Indies' second innings and claimed five in 15 balls to, at one stage, have them 5-7. ADVERTISEMENT Playing in his 100th Test, Starc also became the fourth Australian to reach the 400-wicket milestone, joining greats Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Nathan Lyon. Starc's 15-ball five-wicket haul marked the fastest by any bowler in Test history, beating Ernie Toshack from 1947, Stuart Broad's 2015 Trent Bridge effort and Scott Boland's MCG heroics of 2021. Each of those took 19 balls. Starc also became the second man to take three wickets in the opening over of an innings, striking when he had John Campbell caught behind first ball. He then trapped Kevlon Anderson lbw when the right-hander left a ball that tailed in at him, before bowling Brandon King with the last ball of the over. Starc's assault carried into his third over, claiming his 400th Test scalp with another ball that swung into Mikyle Louis' back pad. Shai Hope followed two balls later, again trapped lbw. ADVERTISEMENT At that point Starc had figures of 5-2, with the only runs off him coming via the outside edge of Hope's bat and through the slips. The morning's headlines in 90 seconds, including Trump's deadline for Russia, legal action against a supermarket giant, and an unusual marathon record. (Source: Breakfast) Starc could have had a sixth victim, had Sam Konstas not grassed two chances at third slip to remove Alzarri Joseph either side of tea. But that opened the door for Boland's hat-trick. Called in for Nathan Lyon, the Victorian edged off Justin Greaves, had Shamar Joseph lbw and bowled Jomel Warrican in consecutive balls. The hat-trick marked Australia's first in a Test since Peter Siddle in the 2010-11 Ashes. In all, four of West Indies' top five were dismissed for ducks, with Louis the only one to trouble the scorers with a four when he edged Hazlewood to the boundary. ADVERTISEMENT Australia's record showing came after they appeared in danger of dropping the Test, when bowled out for 121 in their second innings.

Phoenix land Nigerian striker Eze to replace Barbarouses
Photo: PHOTOSPORT The Wellington Phoenix have replaced accomplished striker Kosta Barbarouses with a Nigerian marksman for the next A-league season. Ifeanyi Eze, 26, will lead the attack, coming off a productive season in the Iraq Stars League, where scored 15 goals for 14th-placed Al-Karkh SC. Phoenix head coach Giancarlo Italiano hailed Eze's signing. "He has all of the attributes I was looking for in an attacker," Italiano said. "He can score goals, he's very fast, he can dribble at pace and his intention is to always go forward. "And the most important thing for me is he's a really, really good person." The left-footed Eze will join the Phoenix once he obtains his New Zealand work visa and he can't wait to meet his new teammates. He will wear the same number seven jersey previous adorned by Barbarouses, who finished his third Phoenix stint at the end of last season and has signed with rivals Western Sydney. Barbarouses scored 23 goals in his last two seasons to lift him to 98 in the A-League, the fourth-most by any player. The Wellington Phoenix now have 19 players contracted for the 2025-26 men's season and have filled four of the five visa spots.
