Official: Lekhedim Ends Real Madrid Spell for Alavés

Morocco World17-07-2025
Youssef Lekhedim has bid farewell to Real Madrid ahead of his move to Deportivo Alavés.
The Spanish giants have officially announced the departure of the 19-year-old Moroccan left-back, who joins Alavés on a four-year deal. Real Madrid will retain 50% of the player's rights along with a buy-back option valid for the next two seasons.
'Real Madrid C.F. and Deportivo Alavés have reached an agreement for the transfer of our player @yuusiii3,' the club posted on Instagram.
Lekhedim, who joined Madrid's academy from Getafe in 2017, made 49 appearances last season across all competitions, scoring twice and providing six assists.
He was frequently called up by former head coach Carlo Ancelotti and travelled with the squad to the FIFA Club World Cup under Xabi Alonso, though he did not feature.
'Today, I have to write a few words I never thought I would have to write. After so many years, the time has come to close an unforgettable chapter in my life,' Lekhedim wrote in his farewell message on Instagram.
The move bolsters Alavés' defensive options as the club looks to build a youthful squad capable of competing in the intensity of La Liga. Tags: AlavesLekhedimReal Madrid

Adam Aznou: If I Were Lamine Yamal, I Would Have Chosen Morocco

Marrakech – In a candid interview with the YouTube channel El After de Post United, Everton's new left-back Adam Aznou revealed he would have chosen to represent Morocco if he were in Lamine Yamal's position. The 19-year-old defender, who recently transferred from Bayern Munich to Everton on a four-year contract, opened up about his international allegiance and his friendship with Barcelona's young star. 'I respect his decision, but if I were him, I would have chosen Morocco,' Aznou stated about his former La Masia teammate. 'When you reach the highest level, the first team, you must follow your heart. It's not about convenience. You play for a national team with passion, to defend your country.' Aznou stressed that his choice to represent Morocco came from deep emotional ties rather than opportunistic considerations. 'Morocco gives me everything. I deeply love this country, its culture, everything it represents. I asked myself: What does my heart want? It wants me to play for Morocco. I didn't hesitate for a second,' he explained. The defender acknowledged his admiration for Yamal's exceptional talent, calling him 'simply the best player in the world today.' Aznou admitted he didn't expect his friend to reach such heights at just 16 or 17 years old, but was not surprised by his overall success. Despite choosing different paths internationally, the two young players have maintained their friendship. They reconnected last May during a match between Valladolid and Barcelona, exchanging pleasantries on the field. Aznou recounted a conversation with Yamal about their respective national team choices: 'When I went to Morocco, I told him jokingly: 'You stay there, I'm leaving. I'm following my heart. It's up to you to see, do what you want, but I respect your decision.'' While Aznou doesn't regret his choice, he also acknowledges Yamal's impressive accomplishments with Spain. The Barcelona prodigy became a European champion at just 17 years old after a historic Euro 2024 campaign, paving his way to his first major title. This success has seemingly validated Yamal's decision to decline the advances from Morocco's coach Walid Regragui and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). Meanwhile, Aznou's international journey has been complex. After playing for Morocco at the U15 level, he switched to Spain's U16 and U17 teams before definitively returning to the Atlas Lions in March 2023, encouraged by the FRMF's efforts. The defender made his debut with Morocco's senior team on September 9, 2024, playing the entire match against Lesotho under coach Regragui. Before joining Everton this summer, Aznou spent the latter half of last season on loan at Real Valladolid, where he featured in 13 La Liga matches, accumulating 874 minutes of playing time. His move to the Premier League signals a clear intent to rise through the ranks and secure steady first-team appearances. According to multiple sources, Yamal's decision to represent Spain came amid contrasting family influences, with his father and uncle reportedly favoring Morocco while his mother supported the Spanish option. De Jong to Replace Ter Stegen as Barça Captain?

Frenkie de Jong is the frontrunner to become Barcelona captain for the 2025/26 season, according to Spanish outlet El Desmarque, as the club weighs a change in leadership amid tensions with current skipper Marc-André ter Stegen. The German goalkeeper's role is reportedly under review following his refusal to sign a medical document critical to the club's efforts to register new players. The standoff has led to mounting pressure within the club, with senior figures considering stripping him of the armband—a move seen as a step towards pushing him out. Despite still officially holding the captaincy, Ter Stegen's future at Barça is now uncertain. Club officials are said to be exploring ways to ease him out, and removing his captaincy could be part of that strategy. Should the change go ahead, De Jong is expected to assume the captaincy. The Dutch midfielder has grown in influence since joining from Ajax in 2019 and is now viewed as a key leader in the dressing room. Ronald Araújo and Raphinha are reportedly next in line for vice-captain roles. Raphinha, in particular, wore the armband on several occasions last season and is praised for his guidance of younger teammates. Pedri is also likely to join the leadership group. Despite his age, he holds considerable respect within the squad. The final spot could fall to either Gavi or veteran centre-back Iñigo Martínez, who has quickly become a steady presence since arriving last summer. Tags: BarcelonaDe JongTer Stegen

Official: Ajax Sign Moroccan Starlet Abdellah Ouazane

Ajax have signed 16-year-old midfielder Abdellah Ouazane on a contract running until 30 June 2028, the Dutch club announced. Ouazane, born in Amsterdam on 15 January 2009, began his career at local club AVV Zeeburgia before joining Ajax's youth academy in 2016. He now joins Jong Ajax, the club's U23 side, for the 2025/26 season. 'We are absolutely delighted to have been able to sign Abdellah today,' said Ajax Director of Football Marijn Beuker. 'He is a creative attacking midfielder who plays a key role in both scoring goals and providing assists. Abdellah has excellent vision, and I'm confident he will also showcase his qualities at Ajax U23 this season.' The Moroccan youth international was named best player of the 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, helping Morocco lift the title after opting to represent the country of his heritage over the Netherlands. According to reports by De Telegraaf and Africafoot, Ouazane had attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Real Madrid. Negotiations with the Spanish side reportedly collapsed over medical concerns. However, De Telegraaf reports that an independent assessment by Amsterdam's UMC hospital cleared Ouazane as 'physically fit to play football at the highest level', following two further medical evaluations. After the breakdown in talks with Madrid, Ouazane and his brother Zakaria returned to Ajax and agreed new contracts with the Eredivisie club. Zakaria, also a Moroccan youth international, featured in the 2023 U17 Africa Cup of Nations and the U17 World Cup in Indonesia. Ajax reportedly implemented a tailored support programme to assist Abdellah's physical development following the Madrid saga. Despite his brief free-agent status in June, the club remained determined to retain him. Football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed on social media that the duo had agreed long-term deals. Ajax is expected to gradually integrate Abdellah into the first team, should his development continue. Tags: AjaxMoroccoOuazaneReal Madrid
