Military bases awarded millions in funding for decarbonisation projects

Yahoo24-04-2025
Two military bases have been awarded millions of pounds in funding for decarbonisation projects.
Vivo Defence Services has collaborated with two Ministry of Defence (MOD) sites to secure public sector decarbonisation scheme (PSDS) grants.
The funding will be used to replace gas boilers with environmentally friendly technology and make fabric improvements to nine buildings at MOD Donnington in Shropshire and upgrade the leisure, training and rehabilitation centre at Bovington Camp.
More than £7 million of the PSDS grant will be used for these projects, which are expected to be completed by March 2028.

This will help the MOD reach its net zero commitments and provide energy cost savings.
Sean O'Gorman, DE&S infrastructure services deputy head, said: "MOD Donnington is one of our largest emitters of carbon and we are delighted to have received a PSDS grant to accelerate the drive to Net Zero for this facility as part of our wider programme of decarbonisation."
Lieutenant Colonel Jamie Walkworth, head of sustainability, efficiency and exploitation in army basing and infrastructure, said: "It is great news that we have received a PSDS grant for Bovington Camp to decarbonise the rehabilitation/physiotherapy centre.
"This is a fundamental part of our infrastructure for operational/deployed servicemen and women."
The PSDS, run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and delivered by Salix, provides grants to help UK public sector organisations cut energy use and emissions.
Dr Paul Roberts, Vivo's director of energy and sustainability, said: "Supporting the MOD to achieve Net Zero is one of our key aims so we are thrilled to have played our part in this success."
Ian Rodger, director for public sector decarbonisation at Salix, said: "The public sector decarbonisation scheme grant will help the MOD transition towards its net zero targets.
"This means that it can significantly reduce its carbon emissions as well as creating a more comfortable building for those using the buildings.
"We have no time to waste in addressing climate change and we have challenging net zero targets to meet."

Renewables Investors Say Australia's Grid Delays Hamper Outlays

Australia's slow rollout of transmission infrastructure is stalling renewable energy projects and putting the country's net zero ambitions at risk, according to a survey of investors managing a collective A$38 billion ($25 billion) in renewable assets across the nation. Transmission delays and slow planning processes are the biggest barriers to deploying capital, closely followed by costly and slow grid connections, according to the survey of members of the Clean Energy Investor Group, which represents companies including Neoen SA, RWE AG and Banpu Pcl.

UK to Bring Back £3,750 Grants to Support Purchases of Some EVs

The UK is reintroducing grants of as much as £3,750 ($5,000) to support electric vehicle purchases, as the Labour government seeks to bolster its beleaguered auto industry and meet net zero goals. The £650 million program is intended to speed the switch to emission-free vehicles, the Department for Transport said in a statement. The full incentives are available only for new vehicles costing less than £37,000, with more than 30 models currently available under that threshold.

Zentiva Climate Targets Officially Validated by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

PRAGUE, July 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Zentiva is proud to announce a significant step forward in its sustainability strategy with official validation of its targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). By setting near term and long-term net-zero Green House Gas (GHG) reduction targets in line with the SBTi, this commitment reinforces Zentiva's dedication to sustainability and aligns our decarbonisation roadmap with the European Union's goal of becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. These targets are grounded in the SBTi methodology, which ensures that corporate climate goals are aligned with the latest climate science and the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Unlike carbon neutrality claims that may rely on offsets, SBTi requires companies to prioritise deep emissions reductions of up to 90%, before addressing residual emissions through carbon removals. Overall Net-Zero Target: Zentiva commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050. Near-Term Targets: Zentiva commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 63 % by 2034 from a 2021 base year and scope 3 GHG emissions 63 % by 2034 from a 2024 base year. Long-Term Targets: Zentiva commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90 % by 2050 from a 2021 base year and scope 3 GHG emissions 90 % by 2050 from a 2024 base year. Zentiva's climate targets are available on Target dashboard - Science Based Targets Initiative The SBTi is globally recognised with a widely accepted framework for corporate climate targets. It provides a rigorous, science-based framework that ensures transparency, credibility, and alignment with international climate goals. Zentiva's Sustainability Strategy is built around three core pillars: People, Partners, and Planet. This reflects a holistic commitment to responsible business practices and long-term value creation. By fulfilling our purpose of providing health and wellbeing for all generations, we acknowledge the impact we have on society and the environment. We strive to operate responsibly, minimising our environmental footprint while contributing to a healthier future. Zentiva's sustainability efforts extend beyond decarbonisation to include measurable reductions in energy use, water consumption, and the amount of waste generated from its production, along with a focus on biodiversity restoration projects. Zentiva's approach is guided by strong governance. Ines Windisch, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability, commented:"We are proud the SBTi has validated our climate targets. Europe is heating up and climate change is no longer a distant threat, but our present reality. Ambition alone won't cool down the planet. We have to turn the ambition into action, and our strategy for decarbonization is the cornerstone of that. Thanks to the engagement of our team and our partners, we can make a meaningful impact across our operations and communities. We cannot fight climate change alone. At Zentiva, every small step counts, and we are proud of our achievements so far."
