Sabres trade Connor Clifton and pick to Penguins for Conor Timmins, Isaac Belliveau
The Sabres traded the No. 39 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and Connor Clifton to the Penguins in exchange for Conor Timmins and prospect Isaac Belliveau. The Penguins used the pick to take Peyton Kettles, a 6-foot-6 defenseman from Swift Current in the WHL. The Sabres still have eight picks left in this draft. Advertisement This looks like the Sabres shedding some salary. Clifton is entering the third season of a contract that has a cap hit of $3.33 million. He played mostly on Buffalo's third pair over the last two seasons. He's a physical right-handed defenseman who will be a high-character addition to Pittsburgh's locker room. He didn't live up to his salary in Buffalo, but he's still a serviceable depth defenseman who can contribute on the penalty kill. We have acquired defensemen Conor Timmins and Isaac Belliveau from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Connor Clifton and the 39th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Details → — Buffalo Sabres (@BuffaloSabres) June 28, 2025 Getting back Timmins in the trade gives the Sabres a right-handed defenseman to replace Clifton on the depth chart. Timmins is a restricted free agent but shouldn't cost as much as Clifton and might end up being an upgrade. Timmins played for both the Leafs and Penguins last season. His team outscored opponents 39-30 while he was on the ice at five-on-five. He's bigger than Clifton and can kill penalties if needed. The extra salary cap space doesn't hurt, given the fact that the Sabres still have some big restricted free agents unsigned. Bowen Byram, Ryan McLeod, Devon Levi and Jacob Bernard-Docker all need new contracts. Belliveau was a fifth-round pick in 2021 and has split time between the ECHL and AHL the last two seasons, so he looks like a minor-league addition for Buffalo's organization. This trade, from the Penguins' standpoint, is all about collecting more assets. Timmins was OK in Pittsburgh, kind of like Clifton is an OK NHL defenseman. Neither is nor was likely to be part of the future, nor was Belliveau, who has spent most of his minor league career at the ECHL level. This is not a great prospect. Advertisement The key to this trade was that the Penguins were able to attain a high second-round draft pick, which is no small thing. Then, the Penguins proceeded to take 6-6 defenseman Kettles, who is another in the line of large draft picks the Penguins are making in their desire to add organizational size. So, this is a great piece of business for the Penguins. They flip defensemen — and while Clifton does make $3.3 million, his contract expires after next season — and they landed a high second-round pick. (Photo of Connor Clifton: Kyle Ross / Imagn Images)

Nathan MacKinnon Dismisses Sidney Crosby Rumor Amid NHL Draft
Nathan MacKinnon Dismisses Sidney Crosby Rumor Amid NHL Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby's name has been a constant item in NHL trade rumor talks, and that continues to be the case in the offseason. Advertisement Former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque added fuel to the buzz when he sent out a post on X saying, "I'm hearing there's a very good chance that Crosby will play somewhere else," amid Friday's 2025 NHL Draft in Los Angeles. That post was shared by "Spittin' Chiclets" on Instagram, and it somehow caught the attention of Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon. "Fake news," MacKinnon commented. Crosby has two more years left on his current contract, which has a cap hit of $8.7 million. A three-time Stanley Cup champion, Crosby's window to add a fourth Cup to his collection appears to be closing, primarily because of his age. Penguins center Sidney Crosby (87) and Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon (29) wait for the puck to Chenoy-Imagn Images He will be 38 years old in August, and he may not have enough time to wait for Pittsburgh to become a legitimate championship contender again. Pittsburgh has not been to the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2022 and has only won 72 games in the last two seasons. Advertisement A trade to a contender like the Avalanche, who just won the Stanley Cup in 2022, can boost Crosby's chance to win another ring. At the same time, such a move for the Penguins should get them additional assets. In the 2024-25 season, Crosby showed he can still get things done on the ice, as he recorded 33 goals and 58 assists for 91 points, while missing only two games. But as it stands, Crosby remains with the Penguins, who made him the first-overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. Sidney Crosby's Agent Addresses Rumors He's Leaving the Penguins
Sidney Crosby's Agent Addresses Rumors He's Leaving the Penguins originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Leading up to the 2025 NHL draft there were plenty of storylines to keep an eye on. Would the Chicago Blackhawks trade out of the No. 3 pick? What about the Utah Mammoth and the No.4 pick? Where would Boston College center James Hagens go, and would the New York Islanders find a way to trade back into the top five to grab him? Advertisement But one unexpected scenario took social media by surprise. Social media personality Georges Laraque took to X to cast some doubt on the future of star center Sidney Crosby with the Pittsburgh Penguins. 'I'm hearing there's a very good chance that Crosby will play somewhere else…,' Laraque wrote. Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby (87) looks for the T. Ludwig-Imagn Images Many started speculating the Colorado Avalanche were a possible landing spot for Crosby after they cleared almost $8 million in cap space after trading Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood to the Columbus Blue Jackets for forward prospect Gavin Brindley, a 2025 third-round pick, and a conditional 2027 second-round pick. Advertisement However, Crosby's agent Pat Brisson shut those rumors down rather quickly, according to The Athletic's Rob Rossi. 'Pat Brisson, agent for Sidney Crosby, told me just now in text message that speculation about Crosby leaving Penguins are 'baseless rumors.' So, there's a name for you, too,' Rossi wrote. Rossi also added: 'FWIW, just spoke with someone who would know (cough, cough)… Anything you read this weekend about Sidney Crosby leaving the Penguins is, in the words of this person, 'a joke.' And this person of all persons would know. He'd, like, know before anybody.' Crosby, who scored 33 goals and 91 points last season, has two more years left on his contract with an $8.7 million cap hit each year. Advertisement Speculation Crosby wanted out of Pittsburgh seemingly started when The Athletic's Josh Yohe appeared on the 'Kaboly + Mack' podcast and hinted the 37-year-old All-Star 'He's not happy; I know he's not,' Yohe stated. '[Crosby] wasn't trying to be rude, but there was an edginess to him that I haven't sensed before. I was actually asking him about the coaching search, and he just said, 'I just want to win. I don't care who the coach is, really. I'll be happy with whoever. I just want to win.' And I've never seen him quite like that.'
