
A new gen of Chinese consumers is logging in post-college admission exam

BEIJING – Suddenly, one sees a lot of young people all over the place. Either they are going around with their hair screaming pink or blue, or diving into waters, learning to drive and/or flying abroad on vacation. It is because an entire generation is sliding into adulthood.
As the college entrance examination, or gaokao, came to an end earlier this month, China's high school graduates didn't just heave a sigh of relief — they opened their wallets to unleash the now familiar 'post- gaokao economy', offering a peek into how 18-year-olds view money and freedom.
For today's youth, this phase is becoming like a rite of passage, a brief period in which to craft a new identity before starting university life. Data from online travel agency Trip.com show that travel bookings surged by 88 percent only days after the exam. For most of these new adults, the trip was one of the first decisions they were taking as adults.
Parents are footing the bill for what many call 'reward consumption'. Many electronics stores have reported a double-digit growth in sales of smartphones, laptops and tablets, gifts that have always been considered essential for campus life. Besides, the sale of smart wearable products has also surged. As the high school graduates gradually become independent decision-makers and key participants in the market, their preferences are steering consumer trends, driving both market upgrades and product innovation.
Yet this consumption trend is not purely materialistic, most of these 18-year-olds are investing in themselves. Learning how to drive is one of the most popular choices for fresh high school graduates, while many young people are joining gyms and swimming clubs to sculpt the perfect figure before entering college. Even the surge in appointments for teeth whitening and double eyelid surgery shows how the young are conscious of their looks.
Unlike people of older generations who associate consumption with pure enjoyment or status, today's teens see spending as a form of realizing their full potential. Therefore, pink hair dyes? Absolutely. Anime-inspired makeovers? Why not?
However, beneath the glitter lies a cautionary tale. The way families are spending tens of thousands of yuan for teenagers' 'must-have' experiences is triggering debates over rational consumption. Dermatologists have raised concern about the safety of cheap hair dyes, while travel agents report parents overspending on luxury vacation packages. The key is balance, so young people need to rein in the desire to chase every trend.
Ultimately, this surge in post- gaokao spending reflects deeper shifts in China's social fabric. For businesses, it represents both an opportunity and a challenge. Companies that combine profitability with responsibility, offering student discounts on durable, practical goods rather than exploiting fleeting fads, are more likely to secure long-term customer loyalty.
The younger generation's preference for quality over quantity is reshaping entire industries. They are shifting from pursuing mere utilitarian value to seeking emotional fulfillment and resonance. Businesses are adapting to this trend by aligning with youth preferences, emphasizing quality, personalization and differentiation in products and services.
Local governments can also better identify emerging demands, enhance high-quality supply, establish sustainable mechanisms and transform short-term momentum into long-term growth engines, ultimately driving comprehensive upgrades in consumption.
Beyond the economic figures, these spending choices reveal a profound truth: China's youth are not just preparing for university, they are rehearsing adulthood on their own terms. As businesses and policymakers take note, one thing is clear: the future belongs to those who see consumption not as an end, but as a means to build the lives they envision.

CATL breaks ground on US$6 billion Indonesia battery venture
THE world's top maker of electric-vehicle batteries broke ground on a US$6 billion battery material ecosystem in Indonesia as the government pushes ahead with commodity downstreaming goals. China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), in a joint venture with state-owned Indonesia Battery Corp and Aneka Tambang, will construct a battery cell plant in the Karawang regency in the West Java province. The estimated total battery capacity is 15 gigawatts (GW), which can generate power for 250,000 to 300,000 cars, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said at the groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday (Jun 29). The venture also plans to produce battery storage for solar panels. 'This groundbreaking is proof of our commitment and cooperation with our partners in China,' President Prabowo Subianto said at the event. 'This is a breakthrough, a colossal one.' The mega-project will also involve the development of nickel mines and smelters, and a battery precursor factory in the Halmahera region of North Maluku province. Indonesia is seeking to move up the global metals supply chain by having companies build smelters, battery factories and electric vehicle factories in the country. Companies including Freeport Indonesia, LG Energy Solution and BYD have billion dollar outlays along the metals supply chain. Prabowo pledged to accelerate this initiative during his presidency, and said this would also help South-east Asia's largest economy achieve energy self-sufficiency. He also called for more projects similar to CATL's battery venture, saying Indonesia needs roughly 100 GW 'to be really independent'. BLOOMBERG

Austrian GP follows Miami in extending F1 contract to 2041
SPIELBERG, Austria - The Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring will stay on the calendar through 2041 after announcing on Sunday a contract extension that equals Miami as the longest in Formula One. The current deal, last extended two years ago, ran to 2030. The circuit in Spielberg is owned by the Austrian energy drinks company that owns Red Bull Racing, and has Dutch four times world champion Max Verstappen as their star driver, and Italy-based Racing Bulls. Miami agreed a 10-year extension to 2041 last month. Behind them, Bahrain has a deal to 2036, Melbourne to 2035, Saudi Arabia and Qatar to at least 2032. "Austria has long been an incredibly special race for Formula One so it's fantastic we have secured the long-term future of a Grand Prix so deeply rooted in the sport's history," said Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali. Verstappen has won a record five times in Spielberg, a 4.3km circuit known for its picturesque backdrop and undulating layout. The late Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, whose son Mark is now at the helm, invested heavily in renovating the circuit. "I am delighted that Formula One will remain at the Red Bull Ring for many years to come. I am proud to continue my father's legacy," he said. Reema Dudekula Tabla June 27, 2025 Sujatha Asokan's journey to becoming the head chef of Quenino, one of Singapore's most innovative restaurants, began in the unlikeliest of places: a Burger King kitchen. At 14, flipping burgers wasn't glamorous work, but it was here that Sujatha learned discipline, precision and timing, which are skills that would form the foundation of her culinary career. From that unassuming start, the 34-year-old's path has been defined by a singular commitment to growth. Today, as the head chef, also known as "Chef de Cuisine", she oversees a kitchen that fuses the rich traditions of Southeast Asian cooking with modern techniques. PHOTO: TABLA But it's more than just a balancing act. In her hands, tradition becomes a springboard for reinvention. Sujatha was born in Kedah, Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese mother and a Singaporean Indian father. Her upbringing was shaped by the intersection of cultures, where food was not merely a means of nourishment but a language through which family members communicated. "I grew up in the kitchen, watching my aunts, parents, and grandparents cook," she recalled. "It was a place of constant curiosity for me. I wanted to understand what made every dish come alive." Her maternal grandmother, a revered figure in the family, played a pivotal role in shaping Sujatha's philosophy of cooking. More than just teaching her how to combine ingredients, her grandmother imparted an understanding of what it meant to experiment in the kitchen. Her first real step into professional cooking came through a part-time job at Burger King, but it was only after her O Levels that Sujatha began to seriously pursue her passion. With encouragement from a teacher who noticed her aptitude for food science, she enrolled in a Baking and Culinary Science diploma program at Temasek Polytechnic. "Food science was the only A that I received in my O Levels," Sujatha said. "It just made sense." Her rise through Singapore's competitive culinary scene took her from Temasek Polytechnic to some of the city's most respected kitchens, including Stellar at 1-Altitude and Pollen. Each position added a new layer of refinement to her skills, but it was at Botanico, where she became head chef, that she truly began to find her voice. There, she merged the vibrant flavors of Southeast Asia with global culinary techniques, creating dishes that were both familiar and new. When Quenino opened its doors in 2023, it was the culmination of her vision - a restaurant that honors the traditions of Southeast Asian cuisine while pushing those boundaries into unexplored territory. PHOTO: TABLA Sujatha's approach to leadership is one of collaboration, not command. In an industry often marked by hierarchical structures, she emphasises trust and mutual respect within her team. "Skills can be taught," she said, "but attitude is everything." It's an ethos that has allowed Quenino to flourish as a creative space where the chefs are given the freedom to experiment and grow. Every six months, the team undergoes a complete menu revamp, a process that includes research trips to find new ingredients and explore new ideas. On one such trip to Cameron Highlands, Sujatha stumbled upon tamarillos, a fruit native to South America. "It's like a spicy passionfruit," she said, "and we decided to experiment with it." It now forms one of the amuse-bouches on Quenino's menu. Part of the challenge at Quenino, she explains, is working with unfamiliar ingredients and flavours, often even those that the team initially dislikes. For the current menu, the chefs purposefully selected ingredients they found difficult to work with. "It forces you to be more creative," she said. The result is a menu that is not just about new flavors, but about pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Their relationship is grounded in trust and mutual respect, and it's this dynamic that has become central to the restaurant's success. Despite her rising acclaim - including being named Rising Chef of the Year at the World Gourmet Summit, Sujatha measures success differently. "Food isn't just about feeding someone," she said. "It's about connection." Outside the kitchen, she unwinds by traveling to eat her way through the region, hunting for new ingredients and ideas. "And I play badminton with friends," she added, laughing. "It helps to whack a few things now and then." She also treasures moments of quiet rest - "just catching up on sleep and doing absolutely nothing." Through her work, Sujatha shows that innovation doesn't mean abandoning roots, it means using them as creative fuel. At Quenino, she and her team are building a new kind of kitchen: one where the future of Southeast Asian cuisine is constantly being rewritten, one memory-laced dish at a time.
